Rawhide!

Post by Swindiana »

As some of you know I'm a member of a man's choir and on the last of April we have an upcoming consert where we'll be doing the theme from 'Rawhide' among other songs a capella.

Guess who'll be doing the cracking?
No, not Ford or Zorro. 8)

Wish me luck! I'll be using a Winrich 8 plait 10 footer natural tan cowhide that should be arriving soon.
Hopefully I will have the chance to wear a pair of Magnoli's Horus cufflinks aswell. There is only so much Indy gear you can sneak up on stage while wearing tails. ;)

Just wanted to share, and I thought you guys to be the ones who would be at least slightly interested. 8)

That is too cool, Swindiana. My congrads to you. Good luck with that....My hat's off to you. 8)

High Regards,

P.S.: When Christmas roles around, you should suggest doing that piece, "Sleigh Ride." That would give you another chance to take the whip out on stage. :wink:

Neat! Are you going to be on stage doing the cracking, or somewhere off stage?

Yeah, a 10 footer is pretty big. They'd have to clear half the stage for the whipcracking and leave koren pa den andra sidan.

Jag har inte skickat din piska annu, jag har inte hunnit ga in i stan den sista veckan. Jag ska skicka den pa måndag. Jag ber om ursäkt för att jag dröjt med att skicka piskan.

:lol:

Thanks guys!

Hall, Chris;
We have an annual Christmas concert aswell, so I just might pick you up on that in case I'm still in town. :) I might me rednosed anyway in case I make a mistake, either from shame or crackburn. ;) (Not sure if 'crackburn' is a word, though I think it should be.) 8)

Strider;
I'll be on stage, hopefully about 11 feet or so from the guys closest among the 20 of os singing. We'll see... We're on a new stage this year and hoping to gather even more folks than last year, so the audience will need to be safe aswell. 8)

Adam;
No worries at all buddy and no apologies needed, let's just say I'm the eager one here. ;) I'll leave your last line out for anyone to guess what it says...
:lol:

Tjing tjong, kolastång!

We'll see, maybe I can grab my TTF (Totally Tapered Fed) and include it aswell.

Cheers!

With a ten footer, you're gonna need some room. A lot of pressure to crack right on cue. It is really a cool idea. Have you decided what type of crack you are going to do, or will you wait to try out the site and see how much room you have? Good luck, I hope it works out great. Let us know.

Now I know what my last line should've been:

rumpor och pumpor, jag roker strumpor

(butts and pumpkins, I smoke socks)

It may be gibberish, but it rhymes :D

Well, it's swedish, but even in swedish it's gibberish :roll:

Though, reading 'Berts Dagbok' I got the impression that 'strumpor' was slang or something for cigarettes. Was I wrong? You'll have to send me a pm about that.

I would love to see a video of this performance, if you can swing it Swindiana! Sounds great, and good luck!

Most likely there'll be a video and I'll make sure I share it if we record it. :)

I think the circus crack or forward ones will be the easiest to time and the ones who will take up less space than if swinging it above your head. If the stage is the same size as last year it will be no problem, but I'm not sure what the new one looks like yet. :shock:
Maybe there will be less cracks compared to the original song aswell... We're just gonna have to see what works best. ;)

Adam;
Socks is just socks in that case, gibberish like you said. :lol:

Why is the movie "Blues Brothers" coming to mind? ;-)

That is awesome, Swindianda! I'd like to see that too! Best of luck with the performance! I'd say "knock 'em dead," but that could be taken a little too literally! :shock:

You'll probably do well with forward cracks, as they require less overhead room, (much to my wife's surprise and dismay, I can do forwards with my 8' Strain in my upstairs library that has a 10 foot ceiling.) That should keep you from smacking anything on the light grid. Plus, the weight and length those IOAB's should lend themselves well to nice, sharp forward cracks, (roll out smooth and slow!) and with the acoustics on a good stage, you don't have to muscle it at all to get folks attention, (check out the cracking footage on Canasta's site for what I mean.)

Hopefully, you get a chance to rehearse a bit on that stage before performing, so you can find the safest and most effective location, and "set your volume level."

All the best!

super stuff... I had to lend my whip and a train a 90 pound girl to crack it for a play I fight coreographed a month ago... enjoy it! (I've always wanted to wear a jacket with tails I think it'd be cool with a top hat and bowtie... )

Bad news; Stage to small to perfom any whipping.
Good news; The concert went well and so did my solo number, all filmed.

Hopeful news; The weather is nice and I have video function on my cam, so I will try and get some whip action clips to post here anyway.

I guess this thread can be deleted now, mods. ;)

Thanks anyway, guys!

:(
Swindy,

That stinks about not being able to use the whip for the song....Glad to hear that your solo went well, though. My hat is still off to you, as a fellow choir guy....
Look at it this way: At least now you have a good reason to go out and buy another (but shorter) whip (start coaxing your choir director now to do "Sleigh Ride" for the Christmas concert - that gives you plenty of time to track down the necessary whip :wink: )....

Highest Regards,
-Chris

Thanks a bunch, Chris!

Indeed I'm starting to see I could easily want more whips in the future, in all lengths, colors, hides and plait numbers. There are just too many variables too fun to try out for having just one you see. ;)

Maybe we could exchange some scores/notes, depending on what type of songs you guys (and girls?) sing. I know an American group called Saturday Evening Post did an old Swedish love song a good while ago. We also have quite a few modern songs with English lyrics arranged for male voices.

Another good thing is that it was filmed by the StudentTV club, but that's for another forum I guess. :D

Cheers!
