When you turn a hat like in Raiders is the dimensional cut done before or after the turn? Also if a hat has been bashed straight for a while can you even turn the hat and rebash it? I like mine like it is but for some reason I have this desire to fool with it!

well one thing about turning the hat u may notice at first is that it will make your head feel like it wants to spin to the left, since its crooked. It may be uncomfortable at first too, but mine has worn in fine now and i dont eve notice it. Another plus with the turn is that the brim will automatically curve up higher on the right side like it is in the movie, i didnt ahve to do anything to it. Im not sure how much u can rebash, but i hear people do it all the time. GL Here is a shot of my Fed Delux with a turn (image is reflipped)

The dimensional cut is done before the hat is turned. I have a PB that was bashed straight, and like you, I decided to fool around with it. I turned it about 3/4" and re-bashed it. It took a little time and work, but after a few days of messing with it off and on, I got it where I like it. Overall, the process was relatively easy.

The hat looks a lot better on my head than sitting on the lamp. The brim swoops are much more dramatic. There is still a shadow of where the original pinch was at, but I think I read some one comment in here, that the shadow is screen accurate.
Two things I learned:
Some people say a turned hat is uncomfortable to wear. It was for a few days, but then it became as comfortable as it was before I turned it. IN fact, if I put it on straight now, it feels uncomfortable. The second is, when you re-bash you hat, wear it for a couple days to let the felt relax and really settle into it's shape, before you decide if it's in the shape you want. I suppose I could add a third thing too, post pictures of your hat in the forum and let other members give you suggestions. There's a lot of knowledge here, and some of the members have probably forgotten more about hats than I'll ever know.

You should post a picture of the hat on your head then. That is the true measure of how good/bad a hat looks as your head shape will affect the hat shape as well. Of course, the lamp looks dashing....

Yes, as lamps go, that is one stylishy attired lamp. A pic of the hat on my noggin' will be forthcoming. I will buy a battery for my camera tonight.

I like that brim. Little bit of taper, but it isn't too bad. Good work on the turn.

Thank-you, everything I learned about doing it, I learned here. I forgot to mention, this is a Peters Bros. hat. It's hard to tell in the pics, but I think the brim might be cut just a little narrow, 2 5/8" front/rear and 2 1/2" on the sides, making it look overly tall from some angles. I can't decide if I should let Marc bash my AB Deluxe when it's ready, or if I should get it open crown and do it myself. Whatcha' think?

yes it would, and that what give the Raiders hat that great look. un-uniformed as you put it.

Agreed. And I admit, when my hat is sitting on the table upside down (brim up), it looks like the weirdest thing...it's made me question this myself a couple times. But when I put it on...darn it if it doesn't just nail the look I wanted.

Do you mean the 'Train Hobo' look or the "I've got a Gumby head' look?

The Gumby one. I've been over the hobo look since ROTLA...although TOD almost got me back into it. (I'm tapering! I'm tapering!)
