Fuller's Earth, hat distress Question

How long does Fuller's earth last on a fedora if you dont try to take it off? I've been thinking about getting an Akubera to shape and dust up as a battered fedora, and I was wondering if fuller's earth stays on forever or falls off real fast or if there is another treatment which lasts longer and gets the same effect.

I've had Fuller's on my Akubra since the QM, and it's still on there... it goes away a little, but for the most part it'll stay. It does tend to fly off my Cotton Wested when I dust the edges and stuff - I think it's just that the felt holds it better than the cotton, but anyway... it works fine and stays however long you want it to, on your hat.

Do NOT get a colored one - only get a "natural" one.
The other ones can be bad, they have dyes in them.

Super thanks, the 1.5 lb should be enough for a fedora right?

Sure! Hehehe - I got the 3lb, but that's because I use it on my jacket for filming, and sometimes take it off my hat, and all that.

I think I got the 1lb. and it's certainly plenty for a hat. I barely used any really. I tested a little on my jacket too. I sticks to that amazingly well and it'll last way longer on the hat as it kind of "sinks in".

That would be great! You'd definatly have that rolled around under the flying/dragged under a truck look if you used all of it on a jacket, not to mention a hat!

I need to pick some up to do my jacket. My hat doesn't need it. I just hang it on the banister upstairs open the window and in just a few days. Voila! dirty hat. Ah, the joy of living in the desert. Course everything else in the room gets pretty dirty too.

Fullers should stay on pretty well. Alot of the Sandtroopers in the 501st use fullers to dirtyup their armor.

On the topic of armor I use that stuff they use on model train dioramas. You can brush it on but I prefer to use an airbrush. There is also a powdered version of it and is very much like fullers earth.
"I heard they were going to vacumn all the sand out of Las Vegas, to keep the tourists happy!
I guess you will just have to roll your jacket around in a pile of money instead....
Seriously, Fuller's Earth - natural color, does indeed work great on jackets
Ken"
It gets VERY dusty here and I WISH I had a pile of money to roll in. I'd get all the Indy gear I could and then some. (They do have the gutted snake from the palace scene in TOD here as well as some beetles and one of them monkey heads. So that's one thing cool here.)

Perhaps we should replace the URL tags with VP ones?

Just outta curiosity, what negative side effects can the colored fuller's earth cause on a fedora, such as on the beaver felt? For example, does it ruin/destroy the felt...?
Thank you,
Captain D

Are there any tutorials on distressing your fedora with Fuller's earth? VP?

Well if you've got the colored stuff on your hat and get caught in the rain... Not. Good. But that's a given, no?
Mostly the worry is discoloration - the structure of the stuff isn't any different, it's only different from the regular Fuller's in that it has dye in it. I think also if you were to leave it on for a long period of time, even without it becoming saturated, it might leave some discoloration on your fedora.

Shane

Yeah, like IndyMcFly said, I think the only worry is that the dye comes off on your hat/jacket/whatever you use it on.

This is barely a tutorial. Actually, it's more of a tutorial for making the pounce bag.

Not much to puting on the FE, though I would sugguest the pounce bag and not just sprinkling it on.
