I hope this is in the right spot, considering it can also be put in the props section.

I wanted to replicate as closely as I could Indy's S&W from Raiders using a cheap toy gun. I found the following gun (12" Magnum Clicker Gun) at

I cut down the barrel to 4" with a hack saw, using an exacto Knife I cut the sight off, sanded off "Made in China", toys logo, and numbers. ( a bonus was that the gun has the S & W logo on it. I made new hand grips out of poplar, filled all holes, sanded, attached sight to shortened barrel, laquered, ect. and here is what it looks like now.

Hey that looks really good mate:) Not bad for 2.99...you did a great job there. At least you won't have problems like I have. With customs. Unless you send it to yourself

You going to replicate the grip pattern and the missing blueing on the barrel too?

Cutting out through the front of the cylinder as well?

Holy @#$%! Looks great! And the price? 2.99? You couldn't pass that up.

I'm converting a new one of those into a Colt M1917 look-alike right now.

I got mine for about $1.75 and will let you know how it turns out.

P.S. It was the first time I ever atempted to make grips, mass production grips have a press that presses the pattern into them.

I've come so far as removing front and rear sight on mine, rounding off the barrel and filling it with putty for weight and removal of the holes. (Can a hole be removed?) The putty was also necessary since the plastic isn't solid. I also replaced the front sight with a Colt NS look-alike. I then used primer, som silver paint and black spray paint. All there is left to do now is some distressing and adding of wooden grips.

We'll see...

wow that looks great man. Does the gun fire caps or anything? I might play with the gun toy gun i have, but mine makes electronic shooting sounds, so i dont wanna mess that up.

that’s probably good enough to get shot if you point it at a cop! well... in certain areas that wouldn’t be much of a compliment... but you certainly did a good job on it.. I like the picture of it next to the holster... very nice, I admire your craftsmanship.

How thick were/are your grips and did yo have to make a "step" in the wood under the part where the medallion is to make it fit?

Yours look good, and the piece of wood I'm gonna use that I have at home WILL need some trimming. I'm just not sure how thick they'll need to be since the metal part of an original gun seems to be thicker than this toy version. Hopefully I will have time to finish mine next week and I'll post some pics.

The gun is a clicker gun, not a cap gun.

The grip thickness at the bottom starts at 1/2" and tapers to 1/8" at top. Here are the steps I made to make the handles

First I plained down my poplar board to 1/2" thick
I then traced the handle frame onto the board (this trace will be the back of the grips) the medallions are not even a part of this step, make the grips straight along the top.
Next I cut the the grips out with a small bandsaw staying about 1/8" outside the line all the way around
I then used the horizontal belt sander and sanded to the traced lines
On top side veiw (thickness) of the grip I put my 1/8" mark and drew a line from the bottom to the top, this will be diagonal
Then I sanded to this line (this is where you must really hold onto the handle due to the belt sanders speed and wood thinness, and watch you don't sand off your fingers)
I then sanded the edges of the grips round
Next I took a strip of poplar about 1/16 thick and cut out two 1/2" rounds ( I have a small cnc machine at work I did these on) for the medalions
I then traced those on the top of the handle and dremeled out about 1/16" of material out of the top of the handle in the shape of half the medalions
Afterword I glued those on and let them dry.
I then sanded them down a small bit to make them blend in with the top of the grips
My next step was to attach the grips to the gun using a small bolt and nut
I then did a final sand on the edges so the grips would match the frame
The final two steps were to cut out the patterns on the original plastic grips and fit them to the center of the wood grips using the dremel tool to cut out a recess in the wood grips and recess the plastic grip pattern into the handle. I used J B Weld to affix the plastic to the wood, so in other words the handles will never come off.

My grips will probably be a bit simpler to make since the Colt NS look I'm going for has a non-patterned grip with a no medallion feature. I don't have a belt sander at home and will probably to a rough saw-out and then carve and sandpaper by hand.

Could you by chance walk through how and where you cut the barrel down, how you replaced the sight and what not as I will be trying to do this tomorrow afternoon in order to get ready for this weekend. Thank you in advance.
