Whip Holder questions.

Hey....
The other day I got my new whip from WSP and went to put it in my adjustable whip holder I bought from Todd's and after messing with it a few times to get the right adjustment for my whip the snap on the holder fell apart!
Now you can imagine how bummed I was. This was the first time I had even used it since I bought it. I did check it when I got it in the mail and everything seemed to work fine.
I'm not here to complain about that though. I already contacted Todd and I'm waiting for a reply. I've bought quite a few things from him and this is the first problem I've ever had with anything he's made. I'm guessing it's a fluke and that it was a defective snap.
I did want to know what kind of whip holders do you guys own? What other type of whip holders are out there that you guys recommend?
I was also wondering if anyone could point me in the direction on how to make my own if I wanted to?

pitfall, i also broke a snap on my new budget belt the other day. Half of it popped out. Luckily though i have my own snaps from making my own holder before, so i fixed it no problem. From using the snap rivits, i find them a pain in the but to get on good, it might be the kind im using too. You can go to walmart and check the sewing department, they should ahve teh same sized ones u have, thats where i got mine, and they are the same as the belt snaps. The ones they sell say its for fabric, but it worked on my leather fine. Some are longer than others for going through thicker material too, check tandy leather.com for some. The packs a few bucks and there are close to 10 sets in a pack. I wrote to todd and told him still, and ann wrote back and apologized, they were very nice about it. Maybe they would replace urs but its easier and cheaper to buy some rivits and do it urself.
The issue with the rivits too is that if the material is too thick for the rivit, they dont lock together strong enough. Basically for each side of the snap rivit there are 2 parts that u have to rivit together. One of the halfs slides into the other and then u hammer it together with the tool they give u, and it spreads the tip of the one rivit inside of the other and holds it inplace. I messed up a few at first, but im good now.
As for making your own holder, its really easy. For my first belt attempt i used the close enough walmart belt and used a strap from a purse i bought from walmart to make some jedi pouches. I sanded away the dark brown leather color and got it to more of a saddle almost. I basically followed the look of the strap attached to the belt on lee keplers adventure page. I rivited the male snap to the belt, and then rivited the one side of teh holder to the belt after. Then i jsut folded the other end over a little and super glued it down, and rivited it also. Under that i attached the female rivit, and then i was done. Its a piece of cake! Im jsut waiting till my whip comes so i can mesure the proper length before i add my new holder to my budget todds.
check lees page for their pictures, i wont post them cause they arent mine.

Here is what I use;

It's the same design as the Whipartist one I believe. Works great!

So where do you get the tool to attach the snaps to the leather and fasten them on? Is it expensive?

for both the regular rivits, and the snap rivits, the sets i bought came with the little anvils, and metal nail/tool used to attach them. Otherwise, just find a hammer and some hard surface to pound them together on.

A friend custom made one for me that is similar to the one designed by Benjamin Scott. It is the best whip holder that I have seen. It is the only one that really resists slipping. I have one of Todd's velcro adjustable whip holders, and the Benjamin Scott design works better.

I have real trouble with whipholders... I think it's just me not knowing how to use them properly or something but it seems like neither of mine work. I have a WolfPit Whips one that sometimes gets loose and the whip coils itself funny, and I have a TAG one that I must have really messed up because it just doesn't work now - doesn't hold the whip tight enough, or is too tight and it opens up at random, letting my whip fall to the floor.
I asked for a Whipartist one for my B-Day (Next Saturday, woo!) after seeing Indiana Ken at the QM and having it recommended by him. They used it in ToT, and he showed me how it won't come out (he swung that belt around in the air and the whip did not budge. Sold me right there... but we'll see.

I hope to hear something from Todd soon. I paid $20 for that holder and I'd atleast hope to get it exchanged.
I think I'm going tor order the holder from that Whip Artist site in the mean time. It looks like it would be the best way to go. I want to know that my whip won't fall or pop off if I happen to be wearing it and have to run or something.

Must be the way your adjusting it shane,
That very one i sold you i used for an entire day,
just to test to see if it would slip. I swung it around like crazy with no
slipping at all. If you would like i can send you another one. (yes send) Ive improved the design.

I've a whip holder from Todd. It's held up without any problems whatsoever- and I've put it through the paces. I'm sure it's just a fluke, as you said.

My whip holster is one of Gery Deer's two part holster systems that uses a turnbuckle. The other loop is a strip of leather that has velcro on one side. The velcro is a separate piece, so when taking your whip out of the holster, you have to remove the velcro strap, (though it keeps your whip coiled if you're changing one whip out for another on your belt.)
It IS screen accurate, but not to Indiana Jones. These were the whip holsters used in "The Rundown" with The Rock and Chris Walken.
Gery also sells a snap version that is designed to look like the ones from the Indiana Jones trilogy, but I don't think most people here would like the two part system, (though it does keep your whips nice and separate in your whip bag.)
Gery's prototyped an "All Velcro" version that works great, and allows for fast draw from a belt. This will be the "Cliffhanger" signature holsters.

The whip artist whip holder is the most amazing brilliant whipholder EVER! I went through a few and none worked effectivly. The whipartist holder performs the 2 main functions that are vital:
1) Keep the whip itself coiled so you dont end up with a 5 foot dangle of loose whip trailing behind you
2) Keeps snapped shut until you desire to open it so you dont find your whole bullwhip lying 1 mile down the road.
The whipartist holder did both of these brilliantly throughout 6 weeks of super arduos use in filming Templars with jumprs, rolls, running, fight scenes, etc which means its good enough for real use in the field.

I agree, Ken. I think that the whip holder that was made for me is like the whip artist design, but with a modification on the snap. Mine has a different means of securing the whip but I am not sure what it is called. Mine uses something else instead of a snap. I think it is actually an improvement. It works extremely well.

I did get an e-mail from Todd and he's going to exchange the one that I bought from him that the snap came off of. Which is good but I still want to get one of these other whip holders too. It can't hurt to have more than one.
So how do I order the whip holder at Wolf Pit Whips?

Sorry, I kinda of phrased the question wrong. I knew where to order it but I wasn't sure how to order it because I've always bought stuff online that used those online forms to purchase stuff like Todd's and WSP.
I think I've got it figured out now though.
Thanks.

We'll see what happens - if somebody gets me a whipartist holder for my BDay I won't need a new one... I probably won't though - they're kind of expensive, those ones.

hmmm the whip holder i claimed would work, isnt staying snapped shut with my new ioab. Are there some snaps that hold tighter than others? Would trying to make a non slip version keep the snap closed. It holds but once i starting moving back and forth, the weight from the whip pulls the snap open. Does the thickness of the leather effect how good the snap stays shut. I might try to make one of those velcro versions above.

Your IOAB whip is cowhide isn't it? I'm guessing that your whip holder is to tight for the thickness of that whip and it's putting pressure on the snap fastner and that's why it's unsnapping on you.
I ordered one of the non-slip whips from Adam and it's only going to cost me $13 plus shipping.
From what I can tell that non-slip design seems to be the only one that works for holding the whip in place.

I've got a Todd, (from McFly I think) and it works Okay. The snap is a bit hard to close when you are wareing it as you seem to need to snap it from the bottom side of the snap first.
I've found it still slips though. Even though it's adjustable, the size of what it's holding can change depending on how tight or loose your coil your whip, so I'm not sure how you'd make one with one fixed snap that would hold all the time w/o adjusting the whole thing each time. A velcro closure sounds like it would work but I'd still want a screen accurate look with a snap.

Yeah, I've got the Todd one also. I'm having to exchange it though because my snap fastner fell apart. I was actually trying to adjust it to hold my whip tight when the snap fell apart.
I also noticed the snap was hard to fasten on mine too. I'm having it exchanged for a new one but I'm still buying that non-slip one from Adam because from what I've read it works really well.

Indakin;
If you have tried adjusting the holder to another size (a bit bigger?) and it still busts open I'd recommend trying a lift-the-dot fastener. It will only open when pulled from one direction. You could replace the regular snap quite easily.
I've had no trouble whatsoever with my holder from Adam, and I try to coil the whip the same way each time so that I will not have to adjust it. Also, you could try having an elastic band put in instead of the leather string to allow for more flexibility. Either black or brown should be available.

Swindiana

That's a good idea to have the elastic band instead of leather, though I'd think it would need to be very heavy duty to work well, like a small bungy cord or something.

thanks for the info on the Todds holder.
Swindiana, thanks for the snap tips. Id rather make my own holder still becaue i want ti to be permentalt y attached to the belt lim,e the raiders version. I just need a really good snap like that. Where did u get yours from? Ill check tandy leather later.

i was thinking about making one myself man. As long as you have everything, rivits, snap rivits, and leather, i could guess it could take an hour at most not even. If you know what your doing and everything was already cut, you just need to hammer the rivits together. I might try one of those at some point, looks easy to make.

I didn't have one of the 'lift-the-dots' put on myself since my holder works fine.
I'm sure tandy leather or any good supply hardware store would carry them though.
You will also find them on quite a few of the US army gear. On the bag for the Corrected English small box respirator, for instance.

well,
It should have, but i had a bit of a problem with the snaps.
And i Figured it would be a really bad idea to send them out
with snaps i was unsure about, considering the fact that the
last holder you had, had faulty snaps. So unfortunatly,
I cant make it to tandy untill saturday, because of school,
and hopefully i can ship sunday afternoon if I make it to tandy
early enough. Sorry for the delay, this is the first time theres been
a problem like this.

Better that you noticed the problem now before shipping them out. It's not a big deal. I'm in no real rush. Just as long as it works once I get is all that matters to me.
There must be a bunch of faulty snap fastners floating around out there in the market. What are the odds?

well when i went to the shoe repair man today for some more nulife spray for my jedi tabbards, i asked if he had some heavy duty snaps, and sure enough he did. He gave me 3 sets for a buck. Its a brass color but its fine with me, a bit of sanding can change that. Best part is they hold perfectly, no problems at all now, it was exactly what i needed. Gonna go whip some more branches of our dog wood tree again
I inevitably do it at least once when i go cracking.

I haven't had a chance to really test it out but it seems to be working just fine.
As far as accuracy goes...That's not a concern of mine at all. I just want the whip to hold.

I've got a quick question.
If I were to contruct my own whip holder what type and thickness of leather should I use and where is a good place to buy pieces of leather for that?
I was thinking about trying to make one myself just to see if I could do it....kind of a hobby type thing. I found the snap fastners at Micheals and Hobby Lobby so that's not a problem.

well i asked adam winrich to throw some scraps into my whip order for me to make a whip holder. I the leather is somewhat stiff, but still more flexable than todds i think. As far as leather snaps, the ones i had used for my old whip belt wouldnt work for my new whip, since it was alot heavier. I asked for the leather snaps at the shoe repair shop, and luckily he had just what i need, nice heavy duty ones that dont come undone. Also u will need regular rivits to hold the leather to the belt, and to hold the little tab section closed on the other end of the holder. I rivited the male snap to the belt, then rivited the holder to the belt covering the back of the mal rivit. Rivit the femal on, and rivit the tab shut. Then ur done! Its pretty simple.

Yeah, I just need to figure out where to get the scraps of leather that would work for these holders. Isn't there a place online or at a store that I could find leather pieces for this?

I'd try a thrift store for a leather purse or something, might be the cheapest way.

yea i agree pitfall, look and see if u can get something from a purse or, even a leather belt from walmart too, that u can cut up. I made my anakin pouch from a brown purse at walmart for 12 bucks. Some of the cheaper purses though are fake pleather. Craft shops have scraps of tandy leather strips. You can try tandyleather.com. Or look for a shoe repair man near u, they always have leather scraps, and might have something that works for u.

Well, I bought some snap fastners at Hobby Lobby. They all looked the same size to me. What kind of rivets should I be looking for...like the size?
I'm going to go over to this shoe repair place this week and see if he might be able to help me with my "project"

um i just bought a basic set of tandy leather rivits. Thye ahve both brass and nickle rivits in the kit, and come in about 3 differnt lenghts , so u have them for whatever size u need. It came with the anvil and setter too. You can buy it at Micheals craft stores, for about 5 bucks.
