Well, I finally did it.

As an early birthday present to myself I ordered the 8ft 12plait Kangroo hide bullwhip from WSP this afternoon. I just got an e-mail that they shipped it by ground today.

I ordered the natural color and I hope it's not going to look to light. I was suprised that they sent it out so soon because I was under the impression from reading somewhere on here that they had run out of the natural colored leather.


I'll post pics of it as soon as I get it.

You will love the quality of that whip. I got the 10' 12Plait in the Medium Brown which looks like Saddle tan. Fantastic craftsmanship.

hey pitfall im sure youll love it. And if your going for the raiders whip, the natural is the color you want, his whip is actually very light if u look at many shots. Thats why i asked adam to make my IOAB as light brown as he can.

It might look a little too light to you when you first get it, but natural tan kangaroo will darken VERY quickly with regular use. You'll very soon have that gorgeous orangy patina that is so very prized by Indy collectors.

I got a Strain whip in Brandy over a year ago, (it's the one pictured for the Lonestar whip on Joe's site here: http://www.northernwhipco.com/Main%20Site/bullwhips.htm) Today it will pass for black unless you're right up on it, (and the picture on the site is remarkably close in color to the actual whip,) so it doesn't take long, (and it coils up to a much smaller size these days as well.)

But, if you end up not liking the color, I'll be glad to take it off your hands hands for you. Anything for a fellow COW member ;-)

However, depending on Mark's stock at the time, those Indy whips are either made by Joe Strain or our own Paul Nolan. So unfortunately for me, but great for you, I'm VERY sure that you'll love it.

Yeah, I was going for the Raider's whip color. I knew from reading posts on here that was the color of his whip in the first film......I'm not sure if the natural tan color whips were used in TOD or LC though.

Now does the whip darken with just natural exposure to the elements in general or is it because of being exposed to sunlight?

I'm very excited and can't wait for it to get here.

no clue buddy, i would guess not much really. Maybe if it got dirty, but otherwise i doubt too much of anything. But im in no way an expert, PM adam or another whip maker.

That is Great to hear, Congratulations PitFall. I know you’ve wanted one of those bullwhips for a while now. All the bullwhips made for the Indy films where made in natural tan, that at some point or another they where darkened up to some degree, probably naturally, but no one seems to know for sure. The bullwhips in Raiders where still very tan, in later movies they took on bit darker coloration.

Sunlight and just using it will darken bark tanned kangaroo hide pretty quickly. You’ll notice the last few feet darken quite a bit at first, as it tends to come in contact with the ground more and just picks up a natural stain from the gound. It will also darken very gradually over time just by keeping it around the house, but you wouldn’t notice it for a long time though as it is a slow process. Don’t worry, You’ll be very pleased with your new bullwhip, “Trust me”. Looking forward to seeing pictures.

I just checked the UPS package tracker and it looks like I should have the whip by March 1st.

Since I was born on Feb 29th I usually celebrate my birthday on March 1st during the non "Leap Years" so that would be perfect if it does get here on the 1st!

Yeah, I do feel a little bit like Ralphie from a Christmas Story..."You'll whip your eye out"

I told my wife I was going to have to buy some safety goggles just to be on the safe side.


This could also be the explination of how "Old Indy" lost his eye in the Young Indy shows....just a mishap with the whip. HA!

Ok..

I got my WSP 8ft 12 plait roo hide Indy Whip for my birthday yesterday. I love it. I ordered the natural color and I was expecting it to be really light but when I opened the box it was the perfect color.

Like I said I love it. It's perfect to me. I haven't used it yet because of the weather outside.

Any tips on how to take care of it would be appreciated. Do you have to treat the whip with anything as soon as you get it?

Yes as soon as you get it, and u can go outside u gotta crack it and crack it, and then guess what crack it. Thats the treatment u gotta give it

This is what my IOAB is going to look like but in 10 foot form. Adam made this one (below) the other day to see what it was like, and i love the coloring. He's hopefully finishing mine right now. Cant wait to get it.

Is it just me or does Pitfall's whip not look like a Strain? It looks like a Schultz to me, but I haven't seen too many Schultz Indys, so I don't know for sure.

Yes, I read everything. Pitfall's whip is definitely a Schultz. It looks just like mine. It's one of the best Indy whip replicas available.

And your IOAB 10 foot is probably the best looking 4 plait bullwhip I've seen. And the color is great!

You don't have to do anything to your whip except take it out and crack it. And that Schultz whip should make things easier for you, since its so easy to crack right out-of-the-box.

I tried cracking the whip in my house but not to hard. I just wanted to see how well it moved. I ended up cracking myself in the middle of my shoulder blades with it when it snaped back! Luckly I wasn't really going that fast with it so it didn't hurt.

I'm used to cracking my old "dime store" whips and they moved differently. This new one is fast and moves like a snake.

It is very stiff too. I'm guessing it will "loosen up" after some use?

About the only bad thing I have to say about all of this is that my new whip holder busted on me before I even got a chance to use it. I need to have it replaced and I'm thinking of getting another type because this whip seems kind of thin.
