Has anyone tried the above technique?
My Fed. Deluxe is still too stiff for my preference. I need a quicker method of softening it. I like natural aging, except in my case, but I don't know if I'll be arpound long enough for this lovely hat to soften on its own

Help out the Ol' Prof, please.
As you can see by my avatar, I'm busy looking for a formula to keep me younger so that the hat will soften, just in case.

Essentially, you just squish it around in your hands for a bit. Prof., you don't have to be as extreme with it, but if you massage and squeeze the crown with your hands, that should begin to do it. This way, you can massage in incriments and soften it litle by little. I'll also do the same for the brim on the sides sometimes to help curve the brim up a bit.

I just tried it.It did soften some. I noticed that the leather sweatband is out of

kilter now.
It is fun to do. Great for getting rid of pent up emotions

:Ideas on how to fix the sweatband?

While watching a ballet a few weeks ago I fiddled with my gray Fed the whole time since there was no place to put it except in my lap. Lots of curling up the brim sides and curling down the front and back, and doing both at the same time. It did get softer, and had an even nicer shape by the time the ballet was over. Ballets, conerts and movies are great treatment for hats.

I also learned the hard way not to crumple the sweat band because that little metal wire inside will bend and even break. The results are not devastating, but I no longer have that nice smooth unbroken contour.

Yeah one has to be careful of the sweatband and stitching, however I liked the method, as it gave the had a slightly... askew raidersish individuality... but that was on my Dorf... I havent done it to my AB...

Pal, I've sat down on my AB before. I've said it once, I'll say it again.

With my AB, I have;

Sat on it multiple times
Scrunched it up into a ball
Popped the creases out and mashed it up
Gotten into a fight in it

The hat is way soft now.

It can handle it. Besides, if you watch Lee fold the hat in the tutorial up like an accordion, the hat comes out fine, and that's one of his hats.

Wow, Russ, that hat in your avatar has a GREAT brim. Very nice job!

And you're right about just having time to idly fiddle w/ it...I had my AB in my hands during King Kong a week ago, so I had three hours to fiddle w/ it.

Time well spent!

Thanks! I just got back from seeing King Kong. A little disappointed the main character didn't wear a hat, but overall it was great for many reasons (hats, story, hats, thrills, hats, etc). I had my hat on my lap with the intention of tweaking it even more, but I had made the mistake of drinking too much coffee before the movie, half an hour into the movie I had more pressing matters on my mind than hat tweaking! When some of those creatures jumped out, my little problem almost fixed itself on the spot.

Tweaked the hat a little anyway, and it is much softer, although the shape is about the same.
