I've been wearing my new Stetson a lot lately - it's not an Indy-styled lid, it's more of a Bogart-on-a-budget lid - and I noticed that when I switched back to my Akubra today, the hat seemed really big!

The Stetson Saxon, colored "Caribou," has about a 2" brim, and a slight taper.

Here's a part of a black and white photo that my girlfriend took of me wearing it - it's for a project she's doing and it's on a book that takes place in '42. EDIT: I know about the watch... I know... I know... pretend it's like Back to the Future, with Marty having a digital watch in 1955.



As you can see, it's much different than the stovepipe, wide brim styled Indy fedoras we're all used to seeing around here.

Has anybody else experienced this sort of problem with switching hats?

Hey Man that's a great pic! I also noticed a difference of wearing my Mallory and my Akubra! But at the moment my Akubra is too small! :evil:

Yeah I thought the same about the watch...

you have a great face for that hat, I think... in the pic at least (it may be the suggestion talking) but I think you have a resemblence to bogart (a particular photograph of him I studied at a theatre event I went to, about relaxed acting, wish I could find the picture to show you)

That picture looks like something straight out of a 30's detective pulp. "She was a pretty dame, but she brought in a pretty ugly case". Very cool. And I mean "cool" in the Sinatra-esque way, not the Californian way.

I used to sell Stetson Saxons when I worked at the VHS, and wore one quite often around the store, so I know what it feels like to wear a short crowned hat, and switch back to the tall crowned Indy lid. After wearing the Saxon for awhile, did you take a second look at the Akubra's wide brim?

After I wore the Saxon, or one of the Biltmores we sold, with their stingy brims, I did a double take on my AB's wide brim. Like .. whoa. This is kinda new again.

Exactly right... Put on the Akubra and said, "Woah this is wide..."

But VHS is a nice shop... though the Saxon has been leaving lead-like traces of gray on my fingertips, I really like it. These should be okay in rain, right?

About the watch - yeah... I forgot about that. None of my classmates will know though.

For any familiar with it, her project is based on "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. I'm playing Meursault for this photo, being interrogated.

Shane, has anyone ever told you that you look like Haley Joel Osment?

Great pic...what it really needs, as taboo as it is now, is a cigarette between your fingers, so the lighting could catch the plume, snaking upwards..would make for awesome noir! IMO

You could even try stage prop cigarettes if you do it again and want to get that effect... if there's a costume store nearby they may carry them (they have special dust powered on the end so if you blow on them it looks like smoke puffing out)

I just had to say that is a very cool photo. I had the same thought about the watch as a few others did. I do not think it is that big of a deal, though. I think that is the best picture that I have seen of you.

I don't know why, but the watch never occurred to me. I saw it, but it didn't ring any warning lights. Didn't fellas wear watches in those days?

The watch is entirely too modern for the time period.

Great pictures. You photograph well. Now you need to get some vintage ties. They are very very different from modern ties and have a distinctive look.

That would actually be a great avatar for TFL!

I know what you mean about switchng hats. I have that trouble when I switch between my Akubra Squatter and my AB. Strangely enough I also have that trouble with a couple of ballcaps I wear a lot.

Love the pic, Shane! That hat looks good on you! Quick, Sherman, throw him in the Way Back Machine!

My mercury felt AB has a taller crown than my other AB and it feels a bit off for a minute or two when I switch between the two. Either way, though, the fedora still looks good!

Hey Hemingway - do you know where I could get some vintage ties?
I know they're a little shorter.... and probably wider at the bottom, yes?

Anyway - I do see what you guys mean about the watch - it's much more of a James Bond watch than a Bogart watch.

Also, I did photo-edit it to add a cigarette and some smoke, but I eh... it's creepy to see me with a cigarette like that.

I like thin ties myself, they're a little more fifties/sixsties, but when I remember I got my LC tie just by searching 'Novelty ties' on the enternet and wound up with a plathora of inexpensive vintage looking neckpeices...
