Confessions and Going Grey!!!

by Kilgour Trout
Well..with all the announcements of purchases out there, I thought I'd announce that I'm finally going grey!

(Wish it wasn't bald!

) Sent the specs and Canuckistan rubles, pemican and more pelts to Steve today and ordered me up an LC Venice Pier beauty AB.
I was hedging around with the thought of another Raiders look but after seeing Hemingway's acquisition I just couldn't take it anymore

. A little Christmas money from family had me acting like a lemming looking at a ledge!
Steve...you were saying a lot of grey's have been making their way through the shop...do you have any count? Its just that, more than being merely an Indiana Jones Hat, the AB offers a drop dead excellent opportunity for non-Indites to get their hands on a vintage quality lid.
So...As soon as it arrives I'll post some pics of my AB covered wee cranium.
P.s. Bink!!!! Get a digital or at least try and steal one from Bufflehead and post that Mercury eh!!
Just watch...Buff is pretty wiley and sharp for his age
Warmest Regards
Kilgour Trout
PPS...Perhaps, we could use this thread to post any further confessions?

Excellent, Kilgour,
I am psyched for you. You know how much I love mine, and how versatile it has proven.
Well done, my friend. I am looking forward to those pics.

Congrats, Kilgour.
I am very glad for you. I am very envious as that is something that I would like to have, myself. I am sure that you will get a great deal of enjoyment from it. The grey will look great with a lot of colors and be very versatile. I am anxiously awaiting the photos of you and your new fedora.
Be careful and don't let the kids trade their hockey helmets in on your new fedora.

Hmmm Pondering????

Thanks Guys..Hem, I'm just glad you posted those original pics.
Great inspiration and fuel for the fire.
As for Michealson's question..
Hmmm...Pondering, Pondering....
An AB, but not an Indy eh...a black Porkpie with a multicoloured ribbon??
How about an LBJ open road???
Mark..somehow, I think you could pull off just about any look!
You've been blessed with a character that confounds style and convention
You know when it comes to unconventional I'd say the same thing about Jess, but I've never actually seen the scoundrel

. Word has it he works for some cloak and dagger coffee cartel. He's kind of like Charlie from Charlies Angels..Oh hold it! That would make us some really homely Angels.
Let's change that example...he's rather more like Howard Hughes? eeeewww...that's not nice either...long toenails and peeing in jars..yuk "Shouldn't have seen "The Aviator".
Ok...Has anyone actually seen Jess?
I'm Intending if all goes well to go out west this spring to hunt him down.
Buff my friend...have you ventured into different colours or styles. It would be great to see. And just BTW... I'm giving some thought to taking another crack at Law Enforcement with the Ontario Provincial Police. Must have been your unusual mind control capabilities eh! Neeed More Police, Need More Police.
Warm Regards

Hey Michelson...where'd your post go??

Uh, he was my roommate at the QM....twice... so yes, I have seen Jess....and it ain't pretty, I assure you.
Oh, and AWFULLY close on the 'open road' theory....
Oh, I nuked it, since no one seemed to care. Appreciate that it was noticed, Kilgour.

Nuked it before I could read and make fun of it?
Okay, Kilgour, yiu and Hemingway both having grey AB's before me means I'm going to have to rob a bank VERY soon!

I'm hoping for a purchace this spring...And as soon as I can get pics of my mercury AB, I'll be more than happy to post them! Mine's sort of a LC/vintage 1930's look. I love that hat!

Heck, bink, I had mine before anyone else did, but you never cared before now.
I HIGHLY recommend you get one for your stable. The photos are nice, but until you have one in hand, it's hard to explain how nice this color and felt is. It's actually softer than the brown felt (at least mine is)

What, did you say something, Michaelson?

Oh, I fully intent to get a grey AB, it's just a matter of funds. Even though I've got a good job now, there's a lot of "unemployment debt" to pay off. Unless I can find a way to get some fun money saved up, it might just have to wait until spring!

I agree, Michaelson; this gray Adventurebilt is very soft and the color is amazing. Everyone needs a gray hat. It goes with so much and can be very dressy.
Here's one more for bink:
OH, and bink just don't rob MY bank.

Don't make me hurt you, Hemingway.

I really do love the color of that hat. I have a vintage Royal Stetson which is more of a bluish grey, but this one looks fantastic!

Wish I was merely "going" grey.

On the other hand some people think the grey makes me look extinguished.

Actually, as long as I have it, I really don't care what color it is. Kilgor, make sure you bring the new grey along when you finally get over to the west coast for visit. It you can't make it, just send that hat. You know you can trust me, right Bink?

I'm glad to hear all the good things you all have to say about Steve's grey hats. As I should have one winging its way to me anytime soon

I am pleased that there are more and more gray Adventurebilts out there. I would like to see some more photos of them. I bet they would look awesome with a Raiders bash.

Fedora has a picture of a grey AB with a Raiders bash hanging around somewhere. It used to be in
this thread, but the pic has since been removed. Steve?

Steve re-bashed my old grey Akubra a few months ago into a Raiders bash and it is my favorite hat next to my AB.. I was so amazed of what he did to that hat. I wear it all the time since it is grey and different and looks so good! Brett

What did Steve charge to do a reblock and a bash. My old Akubra could
use one. Or should I save the money to put towards an AB?

I think you should do both. I'm not sure if Steve is still doing reblocks of Akubras. I think he might just be doing his own hats, but I would ask him directly.
However, once you get an Adventurebilt, you will foresake all other hats. I know I have.
I wore my Akubra for the first time in months yesterday because there was a blizzard in Boston. You should see how it tapered up; mostly because the top dent became wet and sunk in, but still. There was no way I was going to wear my beloved AB in that sort of storm.
Everyone needs back up hats.

Back up hats? That's why you have more than one AB!

I think he charged me around $20 bucks or so, but ask him. As for me my old Akbra was just sitting in the closet until Steve reblocked, changed the ribbon, and re-bashed it. It turned out so well I often can't decide what lid to wear. The new improved grey or the AB

I guess there could be tougher decisions to have to make. Best regards, Brett

I like your thinking, Hemingway, one cannot have too many hats, IMHO.
I do wear the tapered hat when the weather is "bad" but I don't think
it looks as good as the newer Feds that aren't tapered. For that reason,
I tend to not wear it very much. I'm sure an AB will be on order in 2006.

Hemingway I was curious what is your preferred bash for your hats. Do you have a particular style your going for or is it like most of us here a combination of styles mixed in with our own individual thing? Brett

Thank you! Yes, I let my lower quality take tke brunt of bad weather. I don't want to abuse my Adventurebilts. I want them to last because they are so beautiful. My brown Adventurebilt takes the brunt of my casual abuse. This is the hat I took to Puerto Rico, California and the QM, and now it is off to Belize in two weeks.
Indycraze71 wrote:Hemingway I was curious what is your preferred bash for your hats. Do you have a particular style your going for or is it like most of us here a combination of styles mixed in with our own individual thing? Brett
Craze, my preferred bash is the Raiders bash. When I bash one of my hats this is the look I usually strive for, a clean Raiders, a Ravens Bar look, I suppose.
The hat above, the gray hat, was expertly styled by Steve after the LC Venice Pier hat and I love the look of it.

It didn't look quite Raiders to me so that's why I asked. I agree though a great looking lid for sure I like the front dents in the photo they are more defined than in LC, but it could be the lighting.*Thumbs Up! either way.

Thanks! You definitely need some variety in your stable of hats. To me, it doesn't make sense to have four or five of exactly the same hat.

I agree I have my Raiders Ab, My Akubra grey ROTLA, my TOD, PB custom , and my raiders PB hybrid... I try to give them all a turn. Hopefully adding an AB SOC soon.

That sounds like a good mix. A TOD bridge hat is a good look.

I ordered it as a TOD, but that lid could easily pass as a LC hat especially in the promo shots of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery. It is definately a PB bulletproof lid as well, but I still really like it a lot. I agree variety is a good thing when it comes to hats. Myself I probably couldn't have enough fedoras hanging in my closet and some people are totally satified with one great hat.

Am I seeing things Hem?

Hey Hem: I was just wondering what the brim measurements on your Grey LC were. From the pics the brim almost seems a bit stingy from the front compared to your AB RAiders. I could be seeing things?

I know there are block differences between the two hat but without a close up of the hat with those exagerated sides and front its hard to tell. I know you did have one shot of the hat sitting on a chair which seemed to be very accurate to the Venice Pier LC.
Sorry to be a pest but could you repost that pic? Or perhaps a side shot of your beauty?
Ahhh....I'm just a anxious father in waiting eh!!

Well...after digging abit, I found the original pic's and have decided I am seeing things!!

. I saw the over head shot of the Grey and could see a wide brim and all the nuances of the LC Venice.
Oooooh boy...she's perdy.
The thing I couldn't believe was in doing the search I clicked to find all posts by Hem..and ended up with a list of over 50 plus pages!!!

, Thats alot of post to sift through...so I changed my tack and found it 3 pages back in the Fedora section.
Anyway..my optical delusions are answered.
But..if you should run across a digital..We'd be real chuffed to see a few more shots.

BTW, I measured and the brims are exactly the same, so don't worry!

Terrific photos Hemingway... Awesome looking hat, is it as light in color as it appears in the photos. I'm sure it changes depending on the light source much like all other hats. Still one cool lid and pooch as well.

This hat has a lot of lustre. At times it looks dark, but in sunlight it really lightens up. I think the photos above are true to color, especially the outside shots. It is a brown based gray rather than a blue based gray, if you know what I mean.
I wouldn't worry about the color of this one; it is a dead on match for what you see on screen in the great gray / brown Raiders hat Clipper Plane scene debate.

Thanks!

Wow Hem..thanks for posting those extra shots!

They look terrific!
It gives an Idea of how the Lid looks in more casual clothes and natural lighting. Are you finding that you're wearing it more in other Indygear then expected?
The extra pictures are sure appreciated...

This is becoming the hat I reach for first. It is my dress hat and my street hat. My vintage AB is my ocassional hat and my brown AB is my Adventure and travel hat. My vintage Borsalino is my really tall crown hat that I stroll around the condo in hat!
And I definitely second your comments on Craze!

Thanks Hemingway I was wondering which photo you thought showed off the color of the hat the best. Thanks for the warm welcomes you guys I appreciate it... I always come here daily and try to keep up on what is going on with everyone here. However sometimes I can get very busy and not post anything which is a silly thing to do because it is so much fun to be more involved in these dicussions and debates. So thanks again I really think everyone here is top-notch. On another note I'm talking with Steve on getting me set up with a SOC hat so that will be coming soon! I need to replace my first Indy PB that is my ranch hat with an AB!

Actually, my collection isn't THAT big, as many of my hats are retired, or require some work....so my 'active' rotation doesn't really include that many in number, but I'm proud of what I have to date.
