Joe Strain Raiders replica whip

I will be receiving my Raiders of the Lost Ark whip replica from Joe Strain this week. I decided not to get a David Morgan, because he no longer makes the accurate whip from Raiders, and because I heard from a credible source something else I rather not disclose since it may not be appropriate. So, it's possible that most of his whips are made by his apprentices. I think Strain was an apprentice of Morgan as well.

Lee Keppler, a friend who has supplied me with great gear for some time (His current fedora is my favorite) I have two of them and I think they are the perfect Raiders replica fedora, in my opinion (and a great price).

When I told Lee I was looking for a Raiders whip, he told me right away "I can get a Joe Strain whip for you.... a correct Raiders replica". So I jumped on it right away about a month ago. Lee just told me it should be arriving this week. It's a 10 ft Raiders replica.

Lee told me to tell you folks that he can do the same for you. Contact Lee and he will go directly to Joe Strain for an accurate Raiders replica whip.

best wishes to you,

Erich

I am sure you will not be disappointed, not to take anything away from our other talented whip makers here, but Joe Strain makes some of the best Indy bullwhips period. Look forward to seeing pictures.

Lee’s Reputation of course stands by itself, but for future reference you can also just go directly though Joe.

How much are you paying for the whip and what color is it?

BWB is right~ go to the whipmaker himself. Adam Winrich mentioned this in a post not long ago. Whip-making is Joe Strain's livelihood, as it is for some in this forum. If you can find a Joe Strain whip say, on Ebay or secondhand somewhere, then I can understand wanting to save some $$. But by eliminating the middle man, going directly to the whipmaker himself, I believe says a lot. By doing this, we're supporting what he does in order to survive. Believe me, I'm not bashing the retailer, and I realize that the middle man helps to promote the products made by others which they are supplied with: in this case, Joe Strain. Retailers help ppl make $$.
I'm not saying don't go to the retailer, or the middle man, at least not out loud. All I'm saying is, if you can go directly to the man who helps to promote both the sport of whip-cracking and whip-making, go to Joe Strain. Hope I didn't make anyone mad.

good point.

Everything constructive is welcome. That is why we share this great forum. So thanks friends on the great advice. Luckily, Lee did me a special favor, since he is a friend, so no extra damage was done to my wallet.

I will put the pictures when the whip comes in. I will be taking the whip to Peru this month, so even better pictures I will post of the whip with some great backdrops for a reference of the whip in it's natural environment.

In the meantime, I apologize for not having a picture posted yet. As soon as it arrives I'll post.

Wish you well friends,

Erich

(Transaltion: I think Erich is refering to the natural environment of Peru. I mean, really, what is the natural environment for a whip? Right now the natural environment for most of my whips is on the couch in my basement/workshop. -Adam Winrich)

Hmm, well as to the natural environment of the whip, just remember where we first see Indy and his whip. Seems to me in Peru, eh?

Hola Erich,

Congrats on your purchase of a Joe Strain Indy bullwhip. Here's a pic of mine: 12 plait, 8 ft, in saddle tan. Truly a beautiful whip made by a master whipmaker.

Image

I ordered it from WSP, and at the same time I called Joe to tell him I wanted a 5 part, 4 bight, 3 pass knot on the handle. (i.e. a Morgan style knot). We also discussed colors available (no natural tan... :( )

He then sent my whip to WSP with a tag with my name on it. I couldn't ask for more: the great WSP service, coupled with my custom request, at no extra charge!

I live in Arequipa (Peru). Maybe be we can meet when you come to Peru to do some whipcraking.

Saludos,

Bernardo

Darth,

I purchased my Strain (if memory serves me) in November last year. It has seen very little use though, and is almost new. I intend to change that... :D

So can you contact Joe through WSP or do you just go to his website and contact him through e-mail and request a replica Raiders whip?

I would want an 8 or 9ft natural or saddle tan 12 plait roo whip. Do you guys know how much a Strain whip like that would cost me?

What I did was call Joe first (1-866-687-7055) to tell him what I wanted. Also, he'll inform you about the available colors and delivery time, etc.

Then I placed my order with WSP. You can either do that by phone (1.702.873.1100 Direct - 1.800.858.5568 Toll Free Order Hotline) or through their website:

http://www.westernstageprops.com/miva/m ... y_Code=IJC

Let them know that Joe will send you a whip, otherwise they'll send you a whip they have in stock. Actually, the whips that WSP carry are Raiders replicas. The only minor difference is the turkshead knot on the handle knob.

A 12 plait, 8 foot, any color costs $400.

Hope that helps,

Bernardo

Pitfall, you can do either. I personally prefer to go right though Joes Northern Whip Co. though, it cuts out the middleman and saves me a few bucks. All you have to do is call or e-mail Joe and tell him you want an Indy bullwhip along with color and length. Usually he can make it and have it out to you in a week or two.

The 6ft Indy bullwhip I recently ordered from him cost the same as his 6ft Lone star bullwhip, if that holds true with the 8fts then I would imagine an 8ft Indy would run around $380 not including shipping.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm pretty certain I'm going to get one of his whips when I order one. I'm trying to get the money saved up now so I can order one early next year.....hopefully by my birthday.

I guess if he doesn't have the natural tan in stock when I go to order it then the closest color to Indy's whip would be saddle tan wouldn't it?

As far as the Turks head knot goes it really doesn't matter to me either way if that's "screen accurate" or not.

Ahhh... music to my ears. It's really not about "screen accuracy", it' let the whip maker go - with their own creative version of the way a bullwhip zings. David admits he hates doing knots. That was his own version. Let Joe make his own version. I highly recommend Joe's "Lone Star" with his creative knot work. Also, go with Joe's whiskey leather. They are beautiful.

Here's my matched pair I bought in the "lone stars". in whiskey:

Very well put, Sergei. There's collecting movie gear, and then there's collecting whips! Sure we all enjoy looking the part, to be "screen accurate," but boy, it's fun to appreciate the intricacies of a whip-maker's design. "Let the whip maker go"~~I like that! Even more fun than enjoying the various designs, is lettin' the whip go.
Each and every whip-maker puts a bit of himself into his craft, as a sculptor to his sculpture; so you're owning more than just a whip; it's time, labor & ingenuity. Ok, maybe I'm getting a lil too deep :) .

BTW, nice looking pair of Strains there Sergei!

Steve.

Great Lone Stars you got there Sergie, You know normally I am more then happy to leave those kinds of details the to the whip makers discretion and creativity, but for the Indy style whips I just tend to prefer the larger knot for comfort. All the best.
