Indiana On The Cheap

Found at Wal Mart yesterday; Faded Glory cotton twill shirt, 'Sidewalk' color (cement gray, actually a 'stone' color), two button-down pockets with center pleats, no button-down collar - $10.
Wrangler 'Premium Khakis' cotton pleated pants, taupe color, no cuffs - $15.
These pieces look good together, particularly with a Wested lambskin jacket (not cheap). Also, a surplus military (forgot which country, maybe Swiss) shoulder bag with a strap long enough to hang below the jacket, leather bottom and outside pocket. from 'Cheaper Than Dirt', $5. Doesn't look like Indy's WWI gas mask bag, but works.
I don't have a revolver, but I do have a P.35 (Hi-Power). I'm looking for a suitable belt and holster. In the meantime, I have a WWI pistol rig with a 1911A1 that looks pretty good - kind of an 'alternative' Indy look.

kind of an 'alternative' Indy look.
Yea... that's where I'm at now. How many variations of the theme can there be while maintaining the traditional look.

The way I see it, if you wear the jacket and hat, even with blue jeans, most everybody will think 'Indiana Jones', so I guess those two items make up the minimum 'alternative Indy' look.

I find that the hat will set off the "Indiana Jones" idea in people's heads more than anything else. You could be wearing a Wested and MKVII, and most folks wouldn't think Indy. The hat, though ... it's all over then.

I finally figured out the perfect diversions....just grow a big moustache with sideburns, and drive an old car. NO one notices your hat or jacket. They're to busy staring at your car....or wild facial hair! Works for me!

Yeah, too bad she dropped off the face of the earth before I could get mine. I was even on the list, too!

hmmm..I feel kinda bad for saying anything, then. Every Thursday night is Guys Nite Out, and I always wear khaki's with dual back pocket flaps, my MrsDeadlock Faded Glory Indy shirt, Wested and my trusty 'Fedora' Steve bashed Akubra Delux, and JCrew Ruggeds. In the 4 or so weeks I have been wearing this 'uniform' in public, I have not experienced any comments, negative or otherwise (then again, I AM 6'2, 270Lbs. !!)
My point...altho the Wested is Authentic, the rest of the look is close-enuff stuff, and works great. There are a lot of bargains to be found if you just look.

Don't feel bad, Gater, you have a wonderful shirt, from all I've read. Does anybody have a clue whatever happened to Mr. and Mrs. D? I'm just glad I hadn't sent any money yet. I'll giver her credit that she didn't want you to pay until the shirt was ready.

Fisk; I didn't answer your question very well. I guess it's impossible to say how many combinations there could be of various pieces and still be considered reasonably authentic. To start with, very few of us actually look anything like the 'real' Indy, even in our complete outfit. Second, to the average person, even casual Indy fans, there would be no noticable difference between a totally 'correct' outfit and one made up of reasonable alternatives UNLESS they were compared side by side. An automatic pistol is probably not a reasonable alternative to Indy's revolver, and neither would be the web pistol belt, because they look so different from the correct gear. However, as long as the hat, jacket, pants and shirt are reasonable versions and have the dirty, distressed look, I don't think you have to have the exact same brand as those who try to be totally 'correct'. For me, I kind of like the idea of being 'similar' to Indy without being 'correct', so that's why I came up with the term 'alternative Indy'. In this scenario, a period auto pistol could be okay, along with a different shoulder bag, cotton trousers, different boots, etc. If I were to walk into the office in that get-up, every single person that saw me would think 'Indiana Jones' first, and 'What is he thinking?' second, so I have no doubt the 'alternative Indy' works. Actually, I do wear the jacket almost every day that weather permits, and I often wear the hat with it, although I have never been out in public in the full regalia; I just don't feel the need to do that, although I might wear it to a gun show or something similar. With the exception of the gun, belt and shoulder bag, I regularly wear all the items. Sometimes together, most of the time not. I did use the bag at the last gun show to carry around an 1861 revolver I was looking for parts for, but that's the only time it's been out of the house.
