Catwoman's Trick!
Sorry, gotta ask...
Att. all people who've seen 'Batman Returns.'
Y'know the part when Catwoman is causing havoc in Shreck's depatment store, and fends off those two security guards? Right after they run away, she kinda whips herself, wrapping the whip around her torso and WEARS it! Now that's cool!
So my questions obviously are:
A). Do any of you guys know what part I'm talking about?
B). Can any of you actually DO it?
That'd be the coolest thing to learn without a doubt!
Regards,
Rod

Yeah. I saw that movie the day it came out in theaters. When I took up whipcracking in 1993, I studied The Making of Raiders and The Making of Batman Returns extensively. Watch Catwoman's whip wrap in slow-motion (which is easier if you have the DVD). It's really not that difficult, but it works better with shorter bullwhips (6 and 8 feet, respectively). You'll get the hang of it.

Dredging up the past
Can someone post a video of this trick? I've been working on it, and so far it's not quite as graceful, or for that matter successful.

SO weird that this thread just gor resurrected!
I was actually just working on this the other day.
ive been working on different body wraps/tucks and "finishing" techniques...
I have always had this in my mind that this trick was alot more difficult that it actually was, but its pretty simple really.
I beleive i was told that Anthony Delongis learned this trick from Brian Chic, and taught it to Michelle.
Im sorry, but halle berry doesnt have a thing on michelle pfeiffer, she will always be the best

When I was out with Anthony in the spring, we discussed this wrap and the wrap that Hopkins uses in Zorro. They are two very different wraps with slightly different purposes.
Zorro (taught by Alex Green): Used as a temporary storage to do minor things with hands before recovering whip to use again. Ideal way to end a performance, very neatly.
Catwoman (taught by Anthony DeLongis): Used as a more permanent storage method to allow the individual to fight and do acrobatics without having to worry about losing the whip or becoming entangled in it.
I really like the Catwoman wrap, but I do have a more difficult time executing it.

I got the video up and ready.
There is a bit of "blah, blah, blah," in the beginning.
Let me know if it helps.

oh, i really like that second wrap!
Gonna have to get out tommorrow and try that one!
the 2nd one seems like it would work alot better with a longer whip... well longer... i mean 8ft +
I learned the trick from Dan trout to order 6 ft whips with long falls so wraps are still possible....
Thanks for making this vid Chris!

Hey Chris,
That was fantastic! Thanks a lot! Picked it right up! I also like the 2nd one, and it works fine with my 8 footer. By the way, your whip is just beautiful, and I love your style. You look very efficient. Seeing you do the self-wraps is also good for me. I can do those, but it's nice to see it with some nice form, so I can polish it up a little. Very nice!
Thanks again - that was a very cool little trick to learn!

Chris,
AWESOME tutorial, brother.
I've been doing what I THOUGHT was that second wrap as a finish for my stuff for about 2 years now. I'd gone out and picked up "Batman Returns" SPECIFICALLY to figure that crack out.
I didn't realize, but watching that stuff over again, and watching Chris, I've been doing it a little differently.
The whip I do this MOST with is a 6.5' Terry Jacka whip with a 36" fall, and although it has broken in, it's still a VERY stiff in the transition.
The way I've been doing it is to essentially do the SECOND version of what Chris is doing in his video, but rather than take it over the back of my neck and let it hang over the opposite shoulder, I simply lay it over the SAME shoulder as the hand I'm cracking with, (I'm left handed, but right-eye dominant, which REALLY messes up all sorts of things for me, but I can use a whip about equally well in either hand.)
And THANKS MUCH Chris for breaking those down. I've had problems doing that self-wrap with anything above a 6 foot whip, (the way I do it, theres more thong left over, so the handle hangs down to past my waist.) It works, but not as well. I'll have to give that a shot with my longer whips! Now, I'll have 3 variations on that wrap!
I know, what I'm describing sounds like the FIRST version of the self-wrap that Chris does, but it's not. I don't know how else to describe it, but it seems that I've ACTUALLY got a signature move now! I'll call it "The Fish Wrap" or something....
Hmmm...Maybe not...
Sounds pretty lame...
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to share it with you guys! Freelance gig this weekend that's buying a new computer to replace my current fossil. Will have video editing at HOME again! It'll be a little bit, but I'll get this up on YouTube.
All the best, and happy cracking!

GOT IT!!!! first try too (the 2nd variation that is..)...... subsequent tries were hit or miss, but i find that i can get it everytime with a 6 footer...
I figured out the actual catwoman one a while back, and was actually sorta dissapointed at HOW simple it is.... so this 2nd variation looks alot cooler expecially when ya tack it on the end of a fast combo
ill try to post a vid sometime too
I've been doing that for years. I learned it by watching the Making of Batman Returns from an old VHS recording back in the day. I do the Catwoman wrap at the end of this whipcracking video: http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseacti ... d=40989562

Shagbd.
That looks really great. Well done.
I love the practice space. Great with the mirrors.
You talk about the 6 foot whips with long falls.
I have a matched pair of Lonestars from Joe, one with a shortened fall for targeting and one with and extra long fall for wrapping my assistant when and 8 foot whip is to long for the working space.
I'm glad the video helped.
Having a new video camera is really liberating.
Thanks all.
