White or Red Fall

I'm new here, so forgive me if this topic has been covered, but...

I just replaced the fall on my DM 455 last night. I've had the whip since late September. I use the whip whenever I can, so it has been put through the ropes, but is that a short life for a white kangaroo fall? Would the red hide be any more durable? I haven't been going after tree branches or anything. I'll need to order a couple more falls just to have on hand and I'll probably get one of each, but if anyone has any input I would appreciate it.

Thanks!!

I got a new Morgan this summer and I found that the whitehide that they're using now is pretty stretchy and not all that strong. I have some whitehide that's pretty thick and not that stretchy, though I prefer latigo/redhide, mainly because I feel the extra grease they put in latigo makes a denser fall.

I get $10 for replacement falls, and I know that's higher than others, but I also offer free fall replacements (less shipping costs) so I can check up on my work. For the chance to look at another Morgan I'll give you the same deal. PM me if you're interested.

Well the white hide is more screen accurate...

As you pointed out the white hides tend to stretch out more. But you can cut them down. The red hides are a little bit more durable. But having said that you run into bad and good batches on red's and white's. Frustrating, but I just keep a good stock of white's and red's around to make that issue moot. Don't fret, just enjoy...

Another thing you should consider is that everytime you go out, put leather dressing on your fall. They wear out amazingly fast when left ungreased. If you look near the end of the fall where the popper is attached and see little hairs sticking up, stop and grease your fall. The excess that you put on it will quickly get worn off when you start cracking.

I prefer white hide falls. I have found them to be more durable for me.

If you've had your Morgan since September and you've all ready had to replace a fall then you might be cracking wat too hard. Not every crack has to be shot gun blast.

Of course, you could have just had a bad fall cut from a weak section. It happens.

I've noticed that some whip makers pay very little attention to the fall and treat it more as an accessory rather than an intregal part of the whip's construction. I believe that the fall should have as much craftsmanship, care and understanding of its function put into it as the braid it is attached too. It's not just an expendable two foot length of leather. It's the delivery system of the whip's power. All the efficiency of a well crafted thong is for nothing if it's energy is transferred to a weak or poorly thought fall.

You could be right "Edge" I must admit to a bit of extra enthusiasm each time I take my DM for a spin. I have gotten a few good loud bangs out of it. But for the most part I'm pretty reserved. I live in an apartment complex and the neighbors aren't too keen on the loud ones. Plus my daughter runs to her room saying,"No bang, bang Daddy!" I'll keep the Pecards handy and watch for those fibers more often, Paul.
