75 gram pure beaver Portugal Indy fedora

Post by Fedora »

I just made a hat using the zero stiffener beaver Portugal felt. Optimo owners will recall how thin and soft some of their hats are, and this one is the same. Only difference is it is pure beaver instead of a blend. I have 11 pics posted here so you can see what it looks like. Too soft for me, but the vintage guys will like it. I dropped a quarter on the crown to show how soft it is, then dropped it twice more to emphasize the point. You would have to be careful or falling feathers though. They would dent this hat!!! http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/cru ... tyled.html

How far did you drop the quarter from? Man! That sure is one heck of a dent!

Were some of those other top dents made by quarters too?

Can I get a hat with this felt? How much does it cost - the same as the other beaver?

Gentlemen, this is the felt I've been waiting for. I believe the price will remain the same, though Fedora best answer that himself.

Will this be lightweight enough for summer wear, and have you sourced a ventilated sweatband yet? :D Needless to say what MY thoughts are on this, old friend!!

HIGH regards!

That hat is beautiful, simply amazing. Even in photos, I can feel how butter smooth and soft it is.

If you want to know how thin this body is, look at where the hand grabs it here:

WOW!

Looks very nice Steve, and it also looks very thin (i would say 1mm). Someone, you-know-who, will love that felt.

What colour is that?

Ok, the quarter was dropped from 2 feet. Once I get these in stock, the price will be the same as my Winchester felt. This is a very thin body, but super dense, as I found out from sewing in the sweat. I still have to get a good brown, as this one is really dark, but it is just a sample that they sent. Marc is gonna offer the regular weight body, that is, what should be used for an Indy fedora, but it will cost him so much more than these lightweights. The price increases expoentially as you move up in weight. This would make a dandy summer hat though, as the leaves do not fall in summer.  This felt is really hard to work with though, as it dents too easily as you are working it up. But, it pops out perfectly, so............ Now, I just have to get up the money to order a few thousand dollars worth of the bodies, as they have a big minimum!!! But, for a lightweight dress weight hat, it just does not get any better. I think Optimo gets around 6 bills for this stuff, but do not hold me to that. I may be mistaken. Fedora

Hmm, I might get an open crown AB Deluxe and one gray LC Portugal. How much is the AB shipping to Finland?

Too dark? That just means you have another color hat for your wardrobe. Is that ribbon swiped from an old hat? The middle of the bow doesn't look like your standard design.

Good eye Bink!! It is a vintage design, made from new ribbon. I posted the same pics at TFL and wanted the vintage guys to see it, hence the ribbon. :D I often use the wider ribbon with the pleat on the bow for the vintagesque hats that I make. regards, Fedora

If it can be used as a summer weight hat, I wonder if the lining should be left out of this one, or at least a breathable liner (does one exist?) ? Something to consider for those who want a warm weather hat.

Regards! Michaelson
