Club Obi Wan

So I have an older Flightsuits and a Wester distressed cow. The Flight suits doesn't fit quite right and the Wested isn't really the look and weight that I like.

So now that I want a new jacket, I need your expertise in picking the jacket and manufacturer.

Cow
Lamb
Goat

I want something that has the right "Raiders" look that will be reasonably light weight and will age well. Not sure if I care to distress it, but I might.

I forgot to mention I have a wested goat, it is the wested goat I love. Illinois.

Oh yea, and what is the standard request with Wested? As far as required changes/mods to make it more accurate, or is Peter dead on now?

Zen, I know that you dig your costumes. Would this jacket be for everyday wear or an authentic Indy costume? Either way, Wested is the way to go. Lamb has a beautiful drape and feels great to the touch. Goat has a bullet-proof feel and will break in with time. Personally, I think the authentic brown lamb is the way, but that's me. I have a FS in goat that I love also.

Some people ask for a smaller Raiders collar, two-piece gussets, rectangular sliders for the side-straps, no leather detail around the inside pocket, elastic in the jacket (across the back, to keep the action pleats closed no matter what). Peter has nailed the scalloped pocket and the seam on the back of the jacket (where the seam meets the yoke).

Good to see you around Zen. I recently saw some pics of your crew on Kenny's blog of the party out in Frisco. WHEW! Nice! I gotta get out there with my girlfriend one of these years. Been dying to go for years since I first heard about it. Totally our cup of tea...or hot wax.

I'd also go Wested. For me there is no other way to go. I used to be completely partial to the authentic lamb but after seeing the nice quality of the goat, I want one now myself. I like the lightweight feel of the lamb and never had a problem with any of mine to date in over 6 years. The lamb however is very smooth and the goat, very coarse and also a much heavier feeling jacket. I bet the goat would feel closer in weight to your cow and the lamb would feel quite a bit lighter than the two.
In my opinion, you can't go wrong with either choice and it's now become a tough one.
I think if you want to use it for costuming quite a bit you should go with the lamb. You know as well as I that it get's hot in those costumes at those con's, especially after a few cocktails and seeing all the fine women all over the place . The goat is a pretty heavy jacket compared to the lamb. Some seem to think that because the lamb is lighter weight than the goat, it's less durable. I don't think that's the case. I think they're both very durable. Others may find it to be a different story, but that's my take on it.

I think you are looking a goat in the face my friend. While heavier than lamb, I doubt its heavier than the cow or horsehide.

Ok so it sounds like Wested is the best bet, now to decide. On one hand I would like a distressed jacket for the overall look of the costume, but on the other, I would like to be able to wear the #### out of the jacket and distress it on my own. Decisions, decisions.

I met up with Indiana Dudley today, VERY nice guy by the way. We spent about half an hour chatting about a Indy stuff and his great belts, straps and holsters.

I got to compare my wested lamb with his beautiful cowhide Wested. I was amazed at how different the Cow was considering that Wested charges us exactly the same for both.The cowhide is built like a tank! It would do very well as a motorcycle jacket, his one had pronounced grain with maybe 3mm wide pebbles. Amazingly sturdy! The leather seems about 3 times thicker than lamb.

I little unscientific measuring on a couple of samples I had a few months ago indicated that the lamb was about 1mm thick and the goat about 1.5-1.75mm thick and a bit stretchier.

The next jacket I get will probably be a goat in the dark brown, just for a change .

Northern Cali? I don't suppose it would have anything to do with either a certain RANCH named after a character almost called Starkiller? Or maybe a RANCHO something named just like our "Club?" If so, either way, that's very cool. Again, I'm just speculating...

Not sure I'm a little knew at this, but you'll want to carefully consider the length of the jacket you want depending on your hight and you may want to look into the 80's cut...

Edit: A major consideration of length that I'd recomend looking at if you're around 5'9" ish like me is whether you'll wear it with a holster... I kinda wish I'd requested an inch or two shorter on my 38 reg raiders goat but I love my wested just the same... its more screen acurate with the length but the holster itself is a bit larger on guys my size so the jacket length is effected... also think about dark brown... just a thought, like I said I'm not very expereinced but to me every dark brown I see looks more screen acurate...

There are some things on Wested that aren't screen accurate that Flightsuits has. Since you have a Flightsuits, you probably know already about the collar size, the back seam position, and pocket size. I'm still not too sure why their collar size is a tad bigger, but the other two are is b/c they made the jacket for more practical use.

With that said, my vote is still for a Wested goat. If you choose to get a goat, just remember that you'll have a hard time distressing the jacket since it's a lot tougher than Lamb.

Just be very specific with your requests to Peter. A lot has changed on the jackets since you probably ordered. Describe your desired fit and length to him.
