Woohoo! Got it today - THAT was FAST! Thank you, Steve!

I was in the middle of some concrete work around the yard when the hat showed up...I did a quick size check on the hat, sat and admired it for about 10 minutes, then went back to work - wearing it. So right away it started getting softened up running into trees and getting oversprayed from the hose...hahaha...don't worry, I didn't do anything serious. But I couldn't help it, I certainly wasn't going to put it BACK IN THE BOX! :O Besides, it felt a wee stiff...I immediately started 'tenderizing' it.

This is a beautiful hat, Steve. This does what I always wanted my other hat to do, and it just wouldn't. So this is beaver, hunh? I've stepped right into this world of hats with yours - never had a fine, quality hat before. This IS a felt that responds on command! Put the back up, it stays. Put the back down, it stays. Wild!

(Yeah, btw, the back was still UP when it got here. I believe you said in a thread that a lot of them were arriving without that curl, like it came out in shipping. Not so! Mine came out just as it left your hands!)

That little 'don't steal this hat' card is GREAT...THAT is staying in my sweatband...

First, looking back, I think I came across a bit ruder to George than intended. Sorry about that, bud - the real answer to your request is I was going to wait for daylight tomorrow and see if I could convince my wife to humor me and take a couple pics - but as penance for my rudeness, I'll whip out the tripod (leave it ALONE, Bink!) in a few minutes and try to get couple more...

(Again, my apologies. Sometimes the wit (and the 'submit') is on a hair-trigger. )

NOW...Williams, I asked Steve for something similar to Colby's request - I asked for something reminiscent of the temple scene, Raven, and Cairo - yeah, they tend to be very different, but Steve is good at this, so this was not a curveball for him - he figured that equated to a general kind of Raiders styling, and we agreed on that. It'll go Cairo sooner or later, as I tend to love the heck out of stuff.

And for fun, I did ask him to turn it and we tried for a rounder block than my measures indicated, to try to get some of that front-back brim tension to try for some of that nice mushroom shaped blooming...but either I mismeasured a wee bit or that haircut Wednesday was more drastic than I thought, not enough tension yet...will wear it in a bit to see what happens.

I caught the Atlantis medallion too. (plus having COW on your computer screen ) The hat looks awesome! Your hats shaping does look slightly different from mine, but I believe thats due to the ways that beaver accepts bashes compared to rabbit. Mine won't accept a darn thing I do to it. It's like a rubber band, I shape it, it goes right back into place where it started.

The rabbit felt is also much thicker so I think that has a lot to do with it. I think erri_wan pointed out at one time pointed out the thickness differences.

hahahah...no. Notice it took me a YEAR to buy a quality hat...I budgeted for it, and got something of a quality far beyond it's dollar value. But yeah, I'm no longer touting the most economical set of gear...gravenworld clearly outdid me on that score.

Something about the AB still wasn't sitting right...playing with it a bit, I figured out what it was. I needed to turn it more than I'd asked Steve to do initially. Every block is different, this one reacted to a bit more turn than my last hat. Now THIS feels (and looks a bit more) right:

Yup, I could feel that it needed to be turned a bit more, but just hadn't re-pinched it before I took those pics...I knew somebody would point that out. "Your nose appears to be turned too far towards your ear. Stop that."

That's the turn you see working there...REALLY! The point is that the brim is going back to what the dynamics and tensions are telling it to do. So turn it a bit. Yes, actually turn it on your head so the bow is a bit more over your temple...forget the fact that the pinch will be off-center now, we will come back to that. Just look a the brim - did it start doing the smooth swoop on the left, droop over the right eye in front, and the cool crazy flip on the right side right over your temple (like the pic you posted)? If so, the turn is all you need. Just turn your hat, keep it that way, and you just have to repinch the center pinch a little left of it's original position. Trust me, I wouldn't even use water if it will remold by hand for you - that pic above - hat only, w/ more turn in it - I just repinched it manually. I may need to do better work w/ the front dents later, but it reshaped easily by hand - DRY.

Did you guys ever study this? http://www.raidershat.com/ It's 3thoubucks Raider's Turn tutorial...and if you really still need endorsements for this idea, go look at Pagey's pictures on that page.

(Sorry, I would tack this on the end of the last post to avoid clutter, but the current posting 'debug error' problems are preventing me from successfully EDITING a post.)

P.S. Once you get the hang of this, turned hats will just JUMP OUT at you when you see them...kind of like how as soon as you buy a certain model of car, you start suddenly seeing them EVERYWHERE??? They were there all the time, but your brain wasn't as familiar w/ the pattern. Saw a bit of Seabiscuit while flipping channels...whoa, nice turned hat, Mr. Bridges. Seriously, the SAME brim configuration - left swoop, front dip, right flip. It was ALL there.

The brim on the beaver AB responds more to turning the hat than to anything you do with your hands.

Agreed...pushing it artificially just fights where it wants to go. Turn it, and it WANTS to do those things for you. Try it ONCE, you'll stop guessing.

That is one SWEET hat, Jerry. Welcome to the AB club. You just can't beat an AB for quality & value. How often do you truly get to use the words "quality" & "value" in the same sentence & really mean it? Nice job with the turn, BTW. It really looks great.

By the way, I used a similar method to measure my head, but since I don’t have a work bench I just had my wife back our two cars together until they were snug and then measured the distance between the bumpers.

I wanted to revisit Jerry's point here. He is right and his link is a great resource. Once you find the new "front" of your hat, it's fine to just set it on your head in that position. But, the turn works best if you set it on your head and then need to turn it, even if it is just slightly. The "tension" in the band is the key.

I was playing w/ my hat in the rear view mirror today (brims are just as distracting as cell phones)...if I get a chance tonight, I'll post side-by-side - turned and unturned. It's uncanny how the beaver reacts!

And yet your avatar is clearly sporting a turned hat... ...sorry if it now IRKS you...

Kidding aside, Harrison, that's perfectly fine - I have other hats I keep straight, and I won't turn them - why turn my trail hat? Nope, not gonna do it... And I can even see keeping Indy hats symmetrical, as they looked in part of a lot of the films - even all of LC, I believe.

But I'm still shaking my head when I watch folks try to get the flippity brim (hey, that's a technical term) from Cairo artificially...I bashed and shaped a hat for quite a while, and yeah, I could always coax SOME of it in...but it would slack back out if not maintained continuously...that's not the way to keep a hat! That's like combing your hair every five minutes. Once I turned it, it did everything by itself! (The hair analogy would be getting the right cut for the style you want. )

So if someone wants the weirdly asymmetrical brim, I can't see trying to keep that up w/o at least TRYING the turn. That was just for them...
