Is my Wested Raiders too long? I cant decide... what do you guys think?
If so, could/should I send it back for an alteration?

If you don't mind it being that length keep it, otherwise send it back, which is sad becasuse youll have to wait again. Illinois.

My feeling is that it should be at, or an inch below beltline. Illinois.

That's the length I want in mine. I don't want it to hit at the belt, but well below it. I think that looks great the way it is.

Many people like that lenght, that's why there is also the so-called "80's fit". I ordered mine in 80's fit and i'll post pics of it when it will arrive. So if you want to send it back for modifications you could ask them for this "80's fit" if you like it. Anyway Indiana Ken has some pics about it.
You can have a look in this thread

That's how mine is...which i feel is too long, but i will visit wested and get my measurments with an 80's fit (**** in the gut cos i plan to lose weight

The 80s fit is about the tightness not the length.
I think the location of everyone's waist must vary slightly. Look at the thread Erri posted and look at this pic of Indy - heck send the pics of that and your own pics to Wested and say thats where you want it to be length wise.

Wow that pic shows how SHORT it is.
You're right the 80's fit is just about the tightness... mmh i asked to Gemma sometihng like "in order to acheive the "80's fit" i would prefer a shorter lenght" and i suggested them the lenght i wanted. I hope it was clear enough anyway

Dont forget in that pic it is pulled back off his shoulders a bit. But it is still pretty short.

the side shots look like it isnt too long too me...slightly maybe for raiders but not for tod..=P
maybe you just have your pants pulled up more than the average person? when it's zipped up it also looks ok. but then as indiana ken's reference pic shows the jacket is meant to be really short. So yeah...maybe a little long for raiders but i dont know if it should be sent back for it unless it'll but you terribly.
do they have a timelimit on how long you can wait before sending it back for (Free?) alterations/replacement?

Actually, IMO it doesn't look
too long when compared to this pic from indyjacket.com.

The only question I would ask is where your trousers' waistband is hitting you on your body in those pictures. If it's riding about 1 to 1 1/2 inches above your hipbone or about the level of your navel, then the jacket looks fine. Trousers weren't worn hanging off one's hips back in the 1930s unless you had just been through some major physical ordeal and hadn't yet had the time to hike them back up! Or unless you were a slob.
Relax, the jacket length looks fine. I'm the kind of person that would rather err on the long side when it comes to clothing length. Nothing drives me up a wall faster than body or sleeve length that I feel is too short on me.
Cheers!

Yeah but which body do you think is more screen accurate? Harrison Ford's body or his statue?

IMO it looks too long on the statue as well.

Check the picture when he is throwing a punch at the Raven Bar. It shows from behind and even though the jacket is riding, it is obvious that it is short. Remembering that it was derived from a modified A-2 style jacket it would be short-waisted.
Also, I seem to be in the minority here, but my lamb shrunk after soaking it. The jacket is about 1" shorter than when I bought it. I like it like it is though. If you plan on getting your jacket wet, you may want to consider this...

IMHO it's too long.
For a TOD length jacket you should be aiming for the back of the jacket to finish at the top of the backside pockets on the jeans you wear.
For a Raiders length aim for an inch higher.
In both cases the front will finish slightly higher, especially if you have a tummy on you (speaking as one who has), although I don't subscribe to the whole 1 inch on the front to prevent ride up thing as being necessary
All the stuff about '80's fit. As
Ken says, it's about fit of the jacket round the waist. Basically, from my knowledge of how Wested do this, if you are a 42 inch chest, they will fit it so it is a 40 inch fit at the waist. Jackets with this fit can be identified from the inwards taper on the back action pleat panel.

I noticed that the sleeves are nearly as long as the jacket. I think the jacket has to be a bit shorter than the sleeves. At least the original patterns for the jacket show this. But maybe you have unusual short arms? Anyway the jacket looks not too long from the side view.

That looks like a Temple jacket length to me, but then if it's brand new, and you haven't allowed for the natural 'ride up' that WILL occur with wear (which is what rick, I believe, was saying), you're going to lose at least an inch from the length with time. I have no problems with the length you show now. Let me tell you, you'll sure miss that little bit more as the colder weather comes in, and you're climbing in and out of a cold car. The shorter jackets leave a LOT to be desired when your 'backside' hits a cold car seat.
The length you currently have will work perfectly as time progresses and it takes on your shape and dimensions. JMO

I've never understood why so many of you guys think the Raiders jacket is "waist length". Where does that notion come from?
The only time it ever looks short is when he's in motion or in a weird position, like crouched on the flying wing. Leather jackets ride up A LOT with very little movement. But The Raiders jacket is NOT as short as most people want to think it is.

Well he is in motion a lot of the time

It's not a notion. The information on the short, waist length jacket came from Peter himself (approximately 1 to 2 inches below beltline), but there were so many jackets made, he may have been stating an average.

indeed, it is also a function of my size, that length below the beltline for Ford is probably a little less of a big deal than it is for me, as the holster itself is a little bigger fitting on me (I'm about 5"9' so I'm a little bit short.... James Dean's hight I think, so its cool :c)
I like less length though so I may send it back (interferes a bit when I drive/sit) wrestling with the desicion
Note: Something I just noticed... compare the lengths of the jacket in relation to the sleve lengths and my jacket seems a bit long... full shot coming soon (I hope)

With apologies to Michaelson and Peter I'm afraid I tend to agree with you Shawnkara. And in this picture it would also appear that Ford's trousers were riding a bit low which might help explain the jacket's length appearing shorter in relation. Could this be a matter of clothing trends in the early 80's? After all, we were coming off the tail end of the Disco era when Raiders went into production. Were his trousers cut with a lower rise, or did they just slip down to his hips from time to time? I mean, clothing in the 30s did have much higher waistbands when compared to modern fashions.
As a side note, the pair of Indy trousers I recently received from Wested have what I consider a more normal (at least for the era depicted in the film) rise in that they hit right about the level of my natural waist which is higher than my hips, and I'm 5 feet 10 inches tall with a 37 inch waist and 32 inch inseam -- almost a perfect 42 regular in a suit. My Wested jacket comes down to right about my hips, a tiny bit below the tops of my back pockets. A perfect length in my opinion.
I really do hate challenging accepted fact, but these movies were made almost a quarter of a century ago and the recollections of the people involved might be getting hazy what with all the projects they have been involved with since. I'm thinking that the only way that this disagreement could be settled for certain would be if we were able to see actual wardrobe test shots of Ford wearing the whole costume in a controlled studio setting. Have any ever appeared for public display?
I'll apologize now for stirring the pot!
Cheers!

Alright now I'm really bebaffled... I keep finding things that make the jacket seem right, and things that make it seem too long... see pics:

Do you like that length? You really shouldn't be asking for other people's opinion on something that you're gonig to wear for many years.
But if you insist, the jacket looks like a perfect fit.

I think the typical length is about four inches below the waist. If you look at the movies, this seems to be where Indy's jacket usually falls.

Minority Report:
Although it may not be SA, I like all my jackets long (especially my FS Goat).
Mine is as long (perhaps longer) than yours, RJ.
I think body type is a factor as well in the 'look'/general fit of the jacket.

I think your jacket length looks fine. It is on a similar position in relation to your belt as is Tones. I think the arm body ratio really depends on your body shape!
That being said I don't think you can have the length altered without completely replacing the jacket or upsetting the pocket to hem distance. (Seems you would ask them to reduce the length by about 1 1/2" to 2" - and you can't move the pockets). The arms and the fit of the jacket is so nice, it would be a shame to send it back and get a 'new' one that might not fit as well.

Thanks, I was just concerned because it seems to bunch a bit extra while sitting or with the holster... and you guys have been looking at this stuff a lot longer than I have, Its probably just due to the fact that I'm smaller than Ford so I'm thinking I will wear a week longer and if I get over the length I get over it, if its still bugging me after a week or so I'll send it back to get a few inches taken off, Wested's customer service seems to be super excellent....
If anyone knows of a good reason why I shouldnt send it back, lemme know though (like if you attempted this and your jacket came back misconflubled...)

If you do wear it for a week longer, make sure it's in the same condition as when it arrived(just in case you want to send it back). It has to be in brand new condition because Wested will resell the jacket to someone else.
Like I said, it's up to you. If the holster bugs you, then send it back now so you can get it back for fall wheather (before it gets too cold). But really, how many times are you going to wear your holster?

It appears though that he is also leaning slightly forward, making the pants seem lower and the jacket lower as well. Illinois

If his pants were riding low would that not bring the waistband closer to the bottom of the jacket, making it appear SHORTER rather than LONGER?
The Raiders jacket is just NOT a waist length jacket. Like I said, leather jackets ride up really easy, with very little movement, especially when zipped. And Indy's was zipped in most of the action sequences. No disrespect to Peter or Michaelson or anybody. I go entirely off of what I SEE and not what I'm told is true, no matter who said it. I know Peter says it was waist length, but that's simply not what's on the screen.

this is how mine fits in the length. i guess you can't really see where my belt is but i like the length..i sometimes wonder if it's a bit long but if it is it isn't by much (it is a TOD however).

Looking at these pictures, the jacket needs to go just below belt/waistline
