First timer Protection?

My two son's just enjoyed their first attempt at cracking. As my wife was concerned about us marring their visages, I came up with a rather Canadian Idea for protection

The Road hockey goalie mask was perfect as it was light and provided complete face and back of head coverage. It was a great watching both of my guys work out the mechanics of whipping. My 4 year old daughter Hannah was up on the deck jumping up and down wanting to try....
My greatest thanks to Adam Winrich for getting the 7.5 foot IOAB out for My son's Birthday (David 7). His older Brother Connor (10 yrs) and maybe even me had a super time.
Just wanted to share the family fun

You might want to consider added shin guards. I've never hit my head or face, but have just about beat my shins to pieces as I learned!

Never thought about shin protection but not a bad Idea!
About the time David snapped himself in the keester the second time I was lookin for some hockey pants to boot
He called it a super-sonic snap in the bum!!
Connor's leather A2 type jacket came in handy as well.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Shins, legs, back, and neck sometimes hit me. The back and neck always seemed to happen when I made the fatal mistake of using the whip on grass that was semi wet with dew, then it would slowly soak up the dew and suddenly thwack me on the back or neck mid crack. :evil:

I've snapped myself pretty much everywhere. Consider that the soft spots and places w/ a lot of nerve ending might hurt more - so some gloves might help. Shin guards are a good idea...
If he's already gotten past crack #1, then he probably won't hit himself in the face anymore, but just to be safe I'm wondering if goggles or a face mask wouldn't be better than the caged goalie mask for protecting his eyes. Maybe sunglasses under the hockey mask...hmm...or a motorcycle helmet. Or a jousting helmet w/ the visor down...
All that said, the last time I went out cracking, I was barefoot in jeans and a t-shirt and my main protection was
beer. So don't do as I do.
P.S. I really only hit myself when I rush a crack or get tired - and both were due to the same root cause - not keeping the whip 'outside the train tracks'. I.e., pulling the whip OVER or PAST yourself directly instead of slightly outside the shoulder line. I get tired, I get sloppy - and I get stung.

Yeah, but then we'd have to get him that monster chain-mail whip cause he'd shred the leather whips everytime he hit the Goblin King Armor...

Oh, wait...the LEATHER Goblin King armor would be perfect...hmm...I wonder if an IOAB whip would damage the surface of that at all...it would be Pecarded after all (quick, what other shameless shill can I jam in here???)...

I never saw that post before, Sergei! Thanks for pointing it out.
I'm trying to brush up on more cracks before the QM, so I will DEFINITELY keep that in mind!

I'm glad your eye is OK (better than it was is incredible
).
It reminds me of the time I was hit in the eye by a paintball shrapnel ... no retina bleed for me though - just a lot of paintball fluid and shell which washed out over a couple day period.
