Does it take some getting used to?

I have not been wearing my Adventurebilt for awhile, as I work in a ball cap store now, and would have to take it off as soon as I got there, as the store's policy is not to wear hats we don't sell whilst on the clock. As such, I didn't see the point in putting my AB on when I left the house, only to have to take it off when I got to work, and then putting it back on when I left work, only to take it off again when I got home. No point.
My point is, I've been wearing my Yankees cap the rest of the time, and I think my head's gotten used to wearing it, where it used to the AB before. Putting the AB back on feels weird, kinda. Does wearing a fedora take some re-adjustment when you put it back on after a long time?

I dunno. I don't wear my hat while working, but I wear it to and from the office. And I don't wear it while seated in a restaurant either. I think that's pretty normal hat-wearing behaviour. I also wear different fedoras from time to time, and not just the Adventurebilt. It doesn't feel strange switching at all. I do wear a ball cap if I have to paint something or go where I could risk ruining a nice hat (co-ed mud & Jell-o wrestling and such) and it sort of bugs me to have to wear 'kids headgear'. I've always thought of ballcaps as a kids thing.
Maybe you're just feeling odd because they make you wear a cap. You're getting to used to it.
Don't get used to it.

I don't have to wear a cap in the store if I don't want to; I'm the manager. I wear one whilst there because I think it's a good idea. You know, kind of like free advertising. I'd wear my Adventurebilt around there if I could get away with it, much like I did when I was working at Boomer's, however, to do so would be against company policy.
I just find that after going so long without wearing any kind of fedora, it feels weird when I put it back on. Like I am so used to wearing my Yankees cap, that my head goes: "Hey wait a second, what's this?" when I put on my AB.

Strider, I don't know about that. I go from My fedora ( mostly AB ) to ball cap to fire helmet. I don't need to adjust ( maybe because I change from one to another). I would like to know how you are a Yankee fan in San Diego ( are you from NYC) ?

I've been wearing hats so long that it doesn't bother me if I switch fedoras or wear a newsboy cap. But I do feel a bit odd when I wear a ball cap, since I so rarely wear one outside of a softball game. And I can't tell you the last time I played softball! Actually, ball caps are the only hats I don't feel right wearing all the time. There's little individuality for me with baseball caps. (Now a 1930's vintage ball cap would be the exception.) About any other hat works well with me!

![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/Indy%20-%20Big%20Grin.gif)
, but that's another story.
Personally, I agree that when you stop wearing a high crown hat, there is going to be some readjustment to it when you begin wearing it again.
As to other hats, I wear a swordfisherman's hat (like a ballcap with a much longer bill -Hemingway is famous for wearing one
![](//cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/twemoji@latest/assets/svg/1f609.svg)
) while fishing, fedoras casually and with my suits, and, on ocsasion, I have been known to wear a beret with a tweed jacket, but I tore that annoying little tossle piece off; this is a style once again adopted from Hemingway. So, it's each to their own in regards to hats, though I agree with others that baseball caps are for young people.
Afterall, they aren't even hats, they're 'caps!'

I cannot pull off the cap look. I always look like a dufuss. I grew tired of the chuckles, the hushed remarks. Personally I hate baseball caps, and feel they should only be worn on the baseball field. What irritates me the most though is when folks refer to baseball caps as "hats" What an insult.

Every once in a while I tried the old ballcap while working in the yard trick, and received more scathing comments from the family regarding the fact I didn't have on my yard fedora than I care to mention, so I flat gave it up. Heck, I was only trying to keep the sun off my head....I wasn't going for a fashion statement.....but apparently I thought wrong!

I guess it depends on how long you have worn fedoras and how comfortable you are with it. I can go for a week or so without wearing my Akubra. When it goes back on my head it feels like 'home'.
![Happy :)](./images/smilies/IndySmile.gif)
My hats are not accessories or costume and I never feel uncomfortable wearing them. No matter how long I go without, it never feels odd putting one one.

Well, I have a beautiful HJ, currently on display in my office on one of those styrofoam display heads. I've had it on a few times, for a few minutes at a time. I've never been a hat/cap person (as my wife often reminds me), and usually only wear a baseball cap when (a) I may be seen by others outside my household before I've had a shower, or (b) when I'm working in the yard, or (c) when I'm at a baseball game. Since we drilled a well at our cabin and we can take regular showers now
![](//cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/twemoji@latest/assets/svg/1f609.svg)
, I don't have to worry about being seen before washing my hair, and since we've hired a yard guy, and since the Diamondbacks have basically stunk the last couple of years, I haven't even worn a baseball cap lately.
Now, however, I'm trying to get up the courage to wear my fedora in public. Haven't seen too many on folks here in Phoenix, so I guess I've just have to help set a new trend

I am new to this forum but have been enjoying it for months now and I hate for my first post to be anything negative but I can't keep my fingers from commenting on how much I hate baseball caps. I am with Fedora on this one. I understand how calling a ball cap a hat would insult a hat maker like him. I have several ball caps that I used to wear but somehow I started to feel strange wearing them after going to the fedora. It seems that they are more for kids or people that don't know what else to wear on their head. I feel the same way about shorts. Can't seem to be able to wear them without feeling everyone is staring at me. I like shorts on women better than on men.
![](//cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/twemoji@latest/assets/svg/1f609.svg)
Maybe it's just that my face is not ball cap friendly and my legs are not short friendly. Everyone else seems to look fine in ball caps and shorts.

I take somewhat of an issue with the statement that all ball caps are crummy looking hats that are only for "young people".
I agree that the way some young folks wear their caps these days(sideways, backwards, crooked) looks downright silly, especially when you consider the fact that they, for the most part, are not a fan of the team they display on their caps, but are instead wearing it for "Fashion".
However, I feel that the average baseball fan does not look silly wearing a San Diego Padres cap (for instance). Many of my customers wear their ball caps (the right way) to games, or around town as something to keep the sun out of their eyes. True, to us, a fedora would look neat, but that may not be the case for them. How do we know they have not tried a fedora, only to find that it does not look good to them? To each their own.
I really feel that saying ball caps look horrid, no matter which way they are worn, or that they are only for young people is stooping to the same level as those who wear ball caps and make fun of our fedora wearing habits. Not to sound offensive, but it is the same elitist attitude.
Many of my customers are just average joe baseball fans who want to wear a ball cap displaying their favorite team. What's wrong with that?
Also, here's a factor that few, if any, rarely ever consider.
I wear a Yankees cap because I am a Yankees fan.
I wear a Mets cap because it has the letters "NY" on it. I am not a Mets fan.
I wear the Mets cap because I was in New York with my then-girlfriend on 9/11. I saved her life that day. She sends me a New York (Mets, Yankees) cap every year on the first of September; kind of like a way of saying "we may not talk much these days, but I haven't forgotten." Wearing the caps she sends me help me remember that I haven't forgotten, either. Some prefer to wear an American flag pin, I prefer a Mets/Yankees cap.
I don't know of any fedoras with an NY on them.
Ren, you can post that if you want.

Good point, Strider. I know people who look good in a ball cap. My brother wears the cap of his favourite local ball team. He's a huge baseball fan. He's also worn other types of hats, but a ball cap looks pretty natural on him. As far as ball caps go, I like the nice ones alright (not the mess ones). It's just that a ball cap doesn't suit me, personally, unless I'm doing yard work or playing the game. Fedoras and full brimmed hats look better on me. I think it's a matter of preference for many. I agree about those who wear them sideways or just to fit in, but there are those who wear a nice ball cap just as proudly as those who wear fedoras. More power to them. Especially to thouse who wear them for special reasons, like yourself.

Well, at least even with a baseball cap, it is a head covering.
![](//cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/twemoji@latest/assets/svg/1f609.svg)
For me, I have watched the local evolution of wearing baseball caps. Let's step back in time, 30 year worth of time travel. It is 1970, I have just left high school for the military and the only ones wearing baseball caps are rednecks. Generally the cap of choice was advertising their favorite kind of chewing tobacco. Red Man. But, you saw a few Beechnuts too. No caps advertising plug tobacco though, like Bull of the Woods, and Cannonball, both old repectable brands. Generally folks who wore these caps were dangerous, especially if you were a black fellow who wanted to vote. So, I have a bit of a bad taste in my mouth already regarding caps....baseball caps. Fast forward to a more recent time. In the early 90's baseball caps moved from the heads of old rednecks, firmly onto the heads of the black youth. Until that time, no self respecting middle class white kid wore a cap. That all changed in a matter of one year. But, the cap was worn non-typical. And all of a sudden, I started seeing pants that had to be constantly pulled up as to avoid embarrassment, and then noticed that it was not because of the inability to afford a good belt, but rather they were proud of their designer boxer shorts. Great I thought. This would make it very difficult for these young hoodlums to run from the cops. And apparently it did. Every jailhouse photo featured in the local paper was always full of kids wearing pants that would not stay up, along with comical looking baseball caps wore every which way, but the proper way.
Well, it was only a very short time before the kids from good families were looking like rappers, gangstas, crack dealers. I personally have detested this look, and this included the baseball cap. So, we bring with us to the table our past, our experiences, and we judge from behind that prism. So, I hate baseball caps. I hate what they represent. Yeah, I am old, and see things in a totally different way than when I was young. The thing is, I am not sure whether it is wisdom, or just an old fool voicing his opinion.
![](//cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/twemoji@latest/assets/svg/1f609.svg)
I am just afraid the fedora will catch on more than it has with the rap crowd, and then the fedora will be defined not by Indy, or even Bogey, but by folks who are basically not very respectful. And not the sort of person I would want my kids to be, or be with.
I have had two people approach me about buying a hat, locally. One was an elderly black gentlemen and one was a white boy with sagging britches. I made the black gentleman a hat. I refused the young guy's request.
![Laughing ](./images/smilies/Indy-laugh.gif)
That is the truth. There is no way in hades that I would ever sell a hat that I knew in advance how it was to be worn. Call me nuts. Fedora

Fedora I agree with you totally and respect your insight on how you distribute your hats. Its just about exactly the same way here in southern mississippi. Everyone wants to be like a thug and look ridiculous. Often at times coming from very nice families who have nice jobs and have good standards. Many of them act that way because its "tight" or something like that.
I work for the Copiah County school district so I work at about four schools repairing computers and keeping the network up. I see a lot of kids who will most likely fall running from the police (I would stick my leg out to help if I could) and at one school I work at the children are amazingly civilized. The two towns are like night and day. I would hate to see the fedora made into a fad by all those ignorant kids who would probably put it on they're head backwards with the dents facing the other way.

Leave it to me to take a post about the frequency of wearing a fedora and say what I did. My first post and I have already bothched it up. Not to worry though as it is probably my last. I do agree with Fedora but I took what he said and put my own spin on it and made him look bad. To that I offer an apology. To everyone who read my post an apology is also offered. Feel free not to forgive but know that it is there. I didn't quite mean what I said but it is too late now to try to correct it. I am not prejudiced as my father wears a baseball cap all the time and it is always backwards. I don't wear fedoras either. (I collect them.) I am not a tactful writer and more often than not I end up sticking my foot in my mouth and have a hard time taking it out. If you want to wear a cap then that is fine and good for you but if you wear fedoras then my respect is with you because I can't bring myself to wear one out in public yet. I will also say that I agree with what Strider said regarding my post. I give fedora wearers a bad name but I am not perfect and have my faults. Keep in mind that I said that I am young and a slap in the face every now and then is a good thing. Also keep in mind that I said that I looked stupid dressing like that. This forum is about fedoras and like minded people come here to talk about them. It is not a place to discuss our stance on who wears what. Back to topic anyone?

Montana - Do NOT take too hard the reception your first post got. It should have gotten back a resounding WELCOME TO COW, but got lost in mid-thread.
That being said, WELCOME TO COW.
Strider's comments were right, but a bit sharp. Still, right. I don't think he noticed your post count, though, or he might have gone a bit easier on you. He's a good guy.
Please don't let ONE thread keep you from participating in COW. The best thing we can ALL do is laugh off these exchanges and just learn from them. This is usually done best by quoting the movies to share the joke, hence:
"You lost today, kid. But that doesn't mean you have to like it."
Put that figurative fedora tightly on your head, grin, and get back in the game.

Montana I hope you stay. Don't be put off by words; they're just words.

Putting all social implications of a baseball cap aside, I still think the ball cap is childs piece of clothing. Mass production makes the value of things go down in my book. Maybe if there were some very well made ball caps that offered some sort of workmanship that stood out, I would change my mind. The ball cap is in the same boat as the t-shirt.
Wear your fedora.

Also, if some people are refusing to buy a hat from you because you wear a NY cap and they are fans of other ball teams, would wearing your fedora be any worse for business?

Welcome Montana Jones!
Do not let some of our talk scare you off. That is never anyones intention.
We just have strong opinions regarding our headwear.
The only problem I have with baseball cap wearers are how big and low down on their ears they wear 'em!
That looks so goofy!!

Ooh, and those Spiderman underoos. Sure, they're comfy and all, but...er...what? You don't think they're comfy too?

Jerry, if I could fit into a pair of underoos at my age, they'd be TIGHT! So to think YOU are weasring them now... well, that's just plain wrong.
Stick around, Montana. We all felt akward when we first joined. Even Strider. You have every right to your opinion, just as Strider has to his, and we all have to our own. We're all a pretty decent bunch around here, though we do knock heads once in a while. Don't let it get to you. Stick around!

I havent made many posts on this forum but I like to get on here and read alot. I dont care if I get slammed or not because this is everyones own opinion right? I wear an Arkansasa Razorbacks ball cap all the time. I am from Arkansas and I can promise you that I am not a redneck. You could also rest assured that It is always worn straight on my head. Not backwards,m sideways or cocked to the side. (because when I was young I got by but tore up by mom and dad if I did) Now with that said, most of the time when I am not at work where I wear no hat, I tend to be a little more on the shorts and t shirt side and I prefer a ballcap. Now growing up on a farm and working in the sun I understand the value of a wide brimmed hat. I think that there is a time and place for both types of headgear in todays society. Please dont label ALL people who choose to wear caps.

Indiana Jerry wrote:Strider's comments were right, but a bit sharp. Still, right. I don't think he noticed your post count, though, or he might have gone a bit easier on you. He's a good guy.
Thank you. Yeah, you're right. I didn't notice that.

Man, if I had done that ...

Jerry's right. No one around here is going to hate you, or think ill of you for expressing an opinion. After all, that's all I was doing, and if you don't agree with me, well, that's your right. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I don't think you're a swell guy.
Indiana Jerry wrote:The best thing we can ALL do is laugh off these exchanges and just learn from them.
That's probably the best advice.

I can personally attest to this.

I know I do.
Hemingway Jones wrote:Montana I hope you stay.
As do I.
To any I offended with my comments, such was not my intention. I'll do what Jerry suggested now:
"If I offended you, then I am sorry."
Michaelson, Fedora:
You two have your heads screwed on straight, and I respect your opinions.
As I do the rest of you.
Indiana Jerry wrote:Ooh, and those Spiderman underoos.
I think you meant to say Strider-Man underoos. Right? RIGHT? I mean, uh ... and now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

You're a good man, Strider, and I mean that in all sincerity. (and not just because you think I have my head screwed on straight....even though you're one of the very FEW who actually thinks that.....

Montana and Beebob, welcome to Club Obi Wan.
As for the rest of you, are you misbehaving again?
I'm tellin' ya. It really comes to something when it takes a woman to keep these guys in line.
