Darkening an authentic brown lamb?

Has anyone tried to darken an authentic brown lambskin raiders jacket. Will Pecards antique dressing do so, if only a bit? Other suggestions?

Hi Doug

Pecards will darken it just a touch.

Can I ask why you want to darken the authentic brown colour?

You could try dying it though again I dont think its going to make a huge difference

Your best option is probably to sell it or trade it for a Dark Brown instead

The reason I ask is that ideally I was going to order a DB lambskin although I really love both...I liked DB slightly more. Well, I've bought a brand new, never worn Authentic Brown lamb because I got it at such a deal I couldn't pass it up. The guy bought it a year ago from Wested and it was the wrong size so he kept it (?) and never used it. Anyway, the color will be just fine with me but since I have a big jar of Pecard's antique leather dressing I was wondering if that might create a darker authentic?

It will darken it, but it may make it pretty tacky for a while, as lambskin has a tighter pore than other leathers, and the standard dressing tends to just lay on top rather than soak in like cowhide or goatskin. Don't get to heavy handed in the application, or you'll find out the hard way. Been there, done that, never again!

Would Pecard's oil work better on lambskin?

Oil would darken it a bit more than a cream, wouldn't it? (Ah, or if the pecards is oil based to begin with...then it shouldn't make any difference.)

This is something that I have always personally done. I oil all of my leather. Depending on how it was dyed, the pore size of the leather and whether or not there is a protective coat, the oil will penetrate differently.
You still need to apply it in light coats as it is easy to oversaturate well-distressed leather. The oil seems to penetrate deeper into the leather.

So, are we talking about Pecard's "shoe boot oil"?

Do you oil a whip, too? (Have one?) Or is it safer to use a pecards cream or gel?

No. Oil will allow the leather to slip. Use standard dressing on the whip.

Apparently no longer, Rick. It's posted on their main webpage now. They also make product for Harley Davidson and Filson! I didn't see that until day before yesterday!

Got a bottle of the Redwings Boot Oil right here in my hand...still not showing Pecards on the label. Probably wouldn't until they change the labels, or perhaps never at all.

You'd be surprised how many different brands of something are all made by the same company...my wife worked for just such a company for a while, and she'd just pick up brands in the mall or the store and say, "Yep, we even made their label." ;)

It probably never will, Jerry. They're subcontractors for Redwings, so it's sold under the Redwing name as a private label. Like I said, I've known this for several years....it's interesting it's finally out in the open on their own website.

Surprise..

Apparently Red Wing didn't want anyone to know that they didn't make all their own stuff. Now I guess they came to their senses and they realize that it doesn't matter if anyone knows the truth.

I'm very ignorant about leather but if you have no hurry to darken it i know that leather goes darker and darker with time... and also weather affects the darkening. Wear it under rain sometimes (covering your head of course) .
Usually leather get darker just using it outside (my gloves are a living example).

Obviously it's just a IMO! lol

The problem with wearing an indy fedora in the rain is that most of the rain gets on the hat, and not on the jacket! I was trying to get my jacket wet in the rain to get the wrinkles, but I had to doff my lid to get the shoulders and back wet at all.

I wore my jacket in the rain and it has darkened up. But, I am convinced that this is a Dark Brown jacket and not an authentic brown that the Ebay seller said it was. I don't think this mix up was intentional, just think the seller wasn't as educated on the different leathers offered by Wested (now?). The jacket came to me in absolute brand new condition and with a signed COA. I love the color, wouldn't change what it's become.
