261 whip cracks in a minute

Hey everybody,
Just wanted to say that Robert Dante held an open competition last weekend to set a new Guinness record for the most whip cracks in a minute. Both Mike Wooldridge and I competed; Mike did 228 and I did 261. We both used 6 ft. bullwhips that I had made.
The new record is still pending verification by Guinness, but we should know for sure in 6 to 8 weeks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping that they count 261 on the video just like Dante did.

Thanks everybody for the congrats.
The whip I used was a 6 ft cowhide bullwhip with a 12" handle made to the specs that are set in the Guinness rules for this record.
The cowide is actually the same leather that is used in the WSP cowhide Indys, as I've gotten to know the guy who makes those whips and I bought some of the leather from him.
Right now I'm seriously thinking of going the the DFW WE weekend in October, if anything now that I've got this new record pending verification people might be more interested in my whipcracking.

Congrats, Adam!
And best of luck in the verification process!
I knew Dante was setting this up, but I didn't know the when's and where's.
You did it with a COWHIDE whip? Man! That must have been some light cow! Either that, or your wrists felt like jello afterwards

Congrats, Adam~gr8 job!! I'm curious, though, would you be willing to divulge just what type of cowhide you used in making that whip~or is it top secret?

Congrats on a possible record (pending verification of course).

Dude, that'd be awesome. I'll be there. Bring some of your whips to sell.

The cowhide used is vegetable-tanned cowhide made in Peru. I still have yet to find a source for it in the States, but I'm sure that there is one. The leather isn't heavily oiled in the tanning process, and has about the same strength as oiled chrome-tanned cowhide but is lighter. It also happens to squeak/creak quite a bit.

Congratulations Adam and Good for you! Hopefully that verification goes though with out any problems because that is with out question some amazing whip work.
Just out of curiosity, I’m familiar with the bullwhip specs Guinness had for the speed record; they seemed to be pretty adamant about details. Was there any concern about your bullwhip being cowhide and the ones Robert and Chris used being roo?
All the best
Dan

Hi Dan,
Well, about the leather, there is only one stipulation in the rules, and that is that the fall must be leather because that's how they define it in the rules. Other than that I think the lash/thong can be made out of anything.

That is amazing, major congratulations.
Is there any way for you to get the video online? I'd love to see how fast that whip was moving.

I wouldn't doubt it...now if only I had a program that I could use the flip the image, it would actually look right!

Robert Dante has the tape, and I don't know if he made any copies of it, though I would be interested myself to see it.
To get an idea of how fast, just take a metronome and set it a little over 120 bpm and move your hand back and forth each beat, so your hand is in the front on each beat and in back every off beat.
Well, the adrenaline was pumping so hard I didn't really feel anything after the attempt. I did a lot of whipcracking this past weekend and my forearm and shoulder were sore from all of it, not just the attempt.

That seems impossible anybody could keep that up for a minute! Were you actually able to pace it that steadily, or do you start off faster to make up for fading muscles by the end?

I did enough training prior that the pace was even throughout. About the only time I lost the rhythm was when Tina shouted out '10' meaning 10 seconds to go. I was used to training without anyone shouting times at me, so it threw me a little.
I've saw Dante make his successful attempt for the record last year, and I also saw Chris do 222 at the WWAC convention in Claremore. I remember Dante had the whip tangle slightly three times, and Chris had to throw in one or two circus cracks to make the whole minute. I went the whole minute with straight volleys and no tangles, so it's not only endurance but technique as well.
With my previous note, to know how fast, you'd have to set the metronome to 130 bpm and then swing your hand back and forth each beat.

Hey Adam!
Congrats my friend! Very impressive
. You are not only a talented whipmaker but as skilled record-holder whipcracker as well!
I'm glad the cowhide leather I sent you served you well for this. Would you post a pic of the whip you used?
Regards,
Bernardo

Thanks for the clarification Adam. Good to hear that the leather type wasn’t important, Getting disqualified on a technicality like that would be a shame.
Ya know I find it really neat that it was a cowhide bullwhip, that you plaited yourself that you broke the record with. Hope to see some pictures of that bullwhip soon; you certainly kicked it up a notch!

I asked the whip if I could take it's picture and it refused. Now that it's a celebrity it has decided to avoid paparazzi and strange people with cameras
Actually, I'm embarassed by how the whip looks as it doesn't meet the cosmetic standards I have for my work. It's got pieces of leather and string bound to the outside of it in places to help it crack better and meet the Guinness specs. So I don't plan on taking pictures of it any time soon, unless of course the record is verified and I can sell it on Ebay for a lot of money
After all, I only made it to crack very well and very fast (which it does), but not for pictures--that's what I make fancy kangaroo whips for.

The limited-edition Adam Winrich "Frankenstein's Whip" - battle-tested and (hopefully soon to be) record-holder!
That sounds like a whip w/ character...if it gets over it's stage fright, show it! That whip has proved itself, no matter how it looks nor how the official count comes down.
I think you can be proud of the quality...even if it doesn't have purple tassles and bells on it. (Ew, I got queasy just thinking of such a whip...bleah...)
Salute!

I was mainly looking for pictures of you and the record attempt. (Is it still an attempt if it's a new record?)
My guess is that the whip would be pretty blurred out anyway... Like the wings of a hummingbird.
Grattis igen min vän!

Hey, Adam!
Just got caught up with everything after getting back from Texas, so I'm sorry I'm a little late in this.
I am incredibly happy to hear that you did so well! Congratulations....it sounds like you really put alot of work into this, and it paid off.
Are you going to bring that whip to our future club events?
