Could i know something more about moths... i heard about them sometimes but what they do exactly? Are their damages fixable?

I know that moths destroy clothes by eating them. I suppose they do it to hats too.

From what I know the moths that destroy our hats(and clothes) are not you average moth looking creature. I believe it was Fedora who posted a picture of the critter some time ago.

Storing hats in a box with moth balls or cedar will repel them.

Personally I use moth balls. I get sentimental over the smell. Reminds me of childhood.

I think moth damage is not fixable. Tiny holes are not noticable and larger ones cannot be fixed. I have a vintage Stetson that has a couple of tiny bites. I would not bother to do anything about it. It will not spread and is not noticable unless pointed to.

Hey, me too. My grandparents closets always smelled of moth balls and one smelled of cedar.

On the moths. It is the larvae that do the damage to the felt. Felt hats-you eat em' Hat maggot is what comes to mind. Fedora

From what I was told, no, it is not. If the holes are not deep, sometimes they can be 'pounced' down a bit...but bottom line, no. I've passed on a couple pretty decent looking hats in antique stores just because of deep moth holes in the brim and crown. Durn bugs.

Well i have never had moths in my wardrobe but i read about them in this forum a lot so i want to be preventive!

I've never seen them either, erri, but I hear they're a daily part of life in many locations. Ick.

Even light moth damage is bad. If you try to pounce them out, the moth excrement becomes visible. Of course soaking the hat in solvent might take that out, but I am not sure. I have never tried it. But, it will not wash out with a soap based cleaner. Fedora
