Here is my turtorial on bashing my AB. It basically follows Pagey tutorial, but with one MAJOR difference.

Here I have turned the hat to get the brim swoop.


I then put the top dent in.


Adding the front pinch and dents.



Now for the part where I differ from Pagey.
I then enjoy my hat with a COLD beverage.


Obviously I made this post to have a little fun. I really followed Pagey's advice to the T. However, if you are bashing an Akubra, you might want to look back at my tutorial. THese ABs are very workable, Akubras are very stiff.

That hat has a great side view. There is a great bend in that brim. -Very ncie.

That's one fine looking AB you have there. Great job Prairie! I can't wait to get my Camptown and show it off. Should only be a few days away.

I normally do not tag in on these posts, but that is the best one that I have ever made.(along with Pagey's) I think I may need to get you to do the style jobs! You can do mine, and Pagey can do Marc's!!

That looks like the monkey hat to me. You know, where he is sitting at the open air table in the streets of Cairo. Good job! Fedora

That's what I was going for, always do. My favorite shot of the hat is at the very opening of that scene.

I did get that shot from you. It shows off the humps the best.

OK, stupid question time So far I don't think I've entirely GOT the whole turned thing

PJ (or Steve) that hat came with a dimensional cut right?

So PJ you turned the hat to get the swoop, which is a result of the dimensional cut brim being off from the true position on the head?

So......I know that will put the ribbon a bit further forward towards say, your left eye, rather than over your left ear......so my question is, I take it this means the back seam in the sweat band is also off from the centre of the back of your head? Correct???

Exactly! And the top dent is actually slightly diagonal. But, it all looks perfect in the end.

I know you directed this question at PJ and Steve, but you are correct, the back seam and little ribbon is off center once you turn it.

Now that's a nice hat. Love the way you have the swoop, and the way the front of brim bends down like that. (I like that scene as well)

Now, sorry to hijack the thread a bit PJ, but what I need to understand now is if the hat is effectively off-centre, especially in terms of the sweat band......how does the shape of the hat properly fit the head?

I mean if I was say a long oval head shape & the hat was blocked for me to accommodate this, surely if I then turned the hat, the hat would be off-centre for the long oval shape & I would have an ill fitting hat?

I believe you are right. The hat after being turned is an "ill fitting" hat. This, however, is what gives the brim the distinctive bend and swoop. Because the inside of the crown is no longer under even pressure from your head pressing against it, as it would be if you were wearing it without the turn. The pressure is now greater in some areas than others and this results in the bend and swoop in the brim.

If this doesn't make sense I suggest you search for some of Agent5's post on the subject, or just do a search for turn and hat.

That is correct. I could not believe this myself, but with the AB 100% beaver felt, if the hat is turned, you can not even tell by the way it feels. That felt just molds itself to your head.

I am one of those picky people that if something is not perfectly straight or symetrical, it will bug me no end and I can not wear it. I can not even tell that an AB is turned when I put it on my head.

The hat is ill fitting at first, but then conforms to your head. It's really fantastic. A "true" fit, because it is forced to fit. I've done it with all three hats in my "collection" picture(last pic I believe). I found it strange at first, as well. But now, I wouldn't wear my hats any other way.

I went about an inch and a half. Just turn until it looks good.

Those are all of the pictures that I have. Just go by the look you want to achieve. Have Steve send that beaver back open crowned and give it a go.

Ok i'll ask an open crown then... i hope it will be easy to shape because it would be my first open crown hat

Thanks Pagey. I followed your tutorial all the way. This felt is great. I did do a little more shaping of the brim than you suggested. It's nice to know that it's on par with yours.

Cold, dry bash.

Five minute or so to get the basic bash. I then messed with here and there, making this pinch tighter or that bash deeper. It's pretty quick.

I agree; five minutes bashing your hat, then you spend the rest of your life obsessing over it.
Though, in your case, PJ, it's perfect.
