What's the best length for a whip to hang from a belt?

G'day folks,
O.K. I admit it! I know next to nothing about bullwhips. I was wondering though...what would be an ideal length to purchase? I had it on my mind wearing a whip with my costume. I'm 6ft tall and pretty solid. I don't care if I use it for cracking. I just want it to look good/right. Not too little not too big.
Anyone?

10 feet looks very nicely when worn although slightly more cumbersome to use if you are a beginner. I myself perfer an 8 foot whip for use and for wearing.

You'd be fine with an 8 foot or longer. The whip on my shoulder in my avatar is a 7.5 footer if that helps you to visualize.

And I have a 9 footer. Length does matter.
Like mentioned, 10 would look good on a belt but an 8 footer would be easier to learn with. I went inbetween like any good Swede would do.
And like Pagey said, after your first crack you'll be addicted and will want to learn more.

Your welcome to call in to my shop in Devonport and you can see what size you would like best. I wouldn't expect you to buy one, it's just alway good to have a chat to other whip enthusiasts.
BTW this Saturday the Tasmanian Whip Enthusiasts are meeting in Devonport for some whipcracking.

Yea, I started the group about 12months ago now. The most that have turned up is 20, which is pretty good for a small place like Tassie. Ben Hughes 4time Australian Whipcracking Champion is usually there and he will be this Saturday.

Cracking is where it's at Taz. Wearing a bull whip on your belt is like having a sports car in the garage. I recommend you get yourself a nice roo skin 8 footer and go to work. You will be snapping in no time.

I've just bought a whip mainly for photouse (photos will show up at a later time
) but I asked the same question around and came up with 8ft being fine for the purpose. Having now received the Strain whip I tried "coiling it up" as I would hang it from the belt and compared it to some screenshots. It looks exactly like the whip seen in Indy's belt if You watch the Cairo fight scene in the market with Marion. It can only have been an 8ft'er in that scene but someone in here may know more about this. However, I think the 8ft'er looks just Indy when hanging from the belt. But it needs a little "breking in" though, just to get the right impression of a well used whip.

The best length whip to wear on your belt is a 25 footer! It definitely gives the greatest visual impact. It's light and easy to carry, you never have to worry about whip-slip, and it just looks awesome! Trust me!

A 25-footer? Now, that's funny, LOL! Hope you weren't serious, Texas Raider, but if you were, then I apologize, really. Guess the weight would depend on the make of the whip.

I've got some video footage of Adam Winrich very accurately targeting foam cups on a standard WWAC style whip target stand with a 22 foot whip.
It can be done. ;-)

People sometimes get shorter ones to learn on, but it isn't hard to start w/ an 8'. If you started w/ a 6', I bet you'd want something longer soon anyway.
And if you are getting it for a costume, you are better off going longer for the look. I'd advise you to start w/ an 8' or a little more. (8-10).
You didn't mention if cost is an object or not...if it is, and you still want something that LOOKS like an Indy whip (here I go again) search COW for the word 'IOAB'. TRUST ME. That Adam Winrich mentioned above makes a very affordable Indy-looking whip. If it's just for show, or aren't sure if you'll like it, this whip might be PERFECT for you. By the way, this is a GREAT whip - don't think it isn't because of the affordability. It's just made w/ less strands which are wider and a more economical type of leather. But look at the pics...it's a nice whip.
Oh...and if by 'costume' you mean 'Halloween', I'd get on the stick in case there's lots of lead time.

I'd love to watch that. I know there are videos and DVD's out there with tricks and people showing how they are done, but does anyone know of a website or such you can download from? Surely there must be some footage from different championships and such. Thanks.

I use an eight foot whip, and I tell ya, it feels and looks just right hanging off the belt. Not too cumbersome, but not to open either. A ten foot would also be a decent choice though. Illinois

I've got an eight, and I have to consciously coil it to get it to look just right. I think the extra two feet of the 10' would make it always look right without trying.

In all seriousness, didn't she do some of that? Seems like for every movie that requires an actor to learn how to use a whip, you end up hearing in an interview that they were a natural at it. Could it be that it really isn't so much hard to learn, as uncommon, so we THINK it's hard?
Not to detract from you experts...there's NO WAY I'll ever be as good as you. But the point is, I fall down a lot, and I learned to do it pretty quickly.
I'm off-topic, aren't I? Sorry about that.
