You may have seen this picture before, but I found it odd that he's got a hole in his knee and stains up the legs of his pants. Plus the holster looks like it is apparel leather or something. And something really od. Look how thick his bag strap is! I's almost a belt! Is this a very pre-production, almost concept shot?

The bag could be behind him , could it not?

I remember reading that during this publicity shoot they had no bag so just used a brown leather belt to wrap around Ford. I don't know from where that story originated, but it seems plausible to me.

Al, that could be. Notice there's also no buckle on the strap.

During which movie was this shot taken? The web belt and hat seem to be Raiders, but the holster seems to be ToD/LC era...

Also notice his shirt has no pleats. I'd deffinetly say it's a pre-production shot.

That is not correct! It has got the pleats - You see the wringles very clearly..

As I recall it a promotionpicture from the LC-area, but I am not sure..

This shot appeared in a book in 1981, so it a Raiders-era pic. I believe Mike can shed some light on where he came across it.

That's what I thought. There's a little square corner of something sticking out from behind his left leg. I figured it was the bag. However, ITG is right that it's missing a buckle too.
IndyMo wrote:Well at least he has Aldens on.
Yeah, that's what I was wondering as his feet were missing in my picture. Maybe he's got Red Wings on! Guess not. :)

I think that was a photo from Rolling Stone magazine.

Mmrosy has his own website?

You're right. I first saw this picture on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine after Raiders but before any of the sequels.

I seem to recall that it appeared in some kind of a STARS magazine.

That's not right. Look at the hat, clearly the Raiders model. And another proof: The whipwholder is permanently attached to the gunbelt; that was just featured in Raiders. So Indiana Gater's right; it's from Raiders.

Just my $0.02

It kind of makes sense that the gear is pretty beat up. If it was a photo shoot a little after Raiders, they just grabbed whatever gear they could find I guess. (and forgot the bag!)

The photo is from a coffee table book entitled "Stars" there was also a calendar. It did not appear on the cover of Rolling Stone, but I believe was in the article as a black and white. It was also in US magazine as a black and white.

The little triangle you see on his leg is not the bag, but another piece of material from the pants, probably another tear in the back of the leg.

ITG, I don't have my own website, though I could, but I do have server space where I host my pics used here.

I guess I've been around long enough to have gone into reruns, and this question has come up before. I believe the last time we talked about this, I theorized that they used a belt because they couldn't find a bag. Also this shot wasn't used in Rolling Stone, but I believe it is from the same photography session, as he looks essentially the same. This would be my favorite Indy photo if only he had the right bag strap and hadn't shaved.

That 'little piece of material' is the pocket flap on his pants.

I've always wondered what kind of crack he's doing. I'm no whip expert but isn't that an awkward stance for a crack?

Just to clear this up about this photo, it WAS originally used for a photo shoot for Raiders, taken by Bill King and first seen in Rolling Stone magazine, June 25, 1981. It did not appear on the cover though. Could have been production shots for the film or could have been a shoot for Rolling Stone. It then appeared later on the back cover of the Stars book in 1983.
The US magazine is not the same exact photo but is from the same photo shoot for sure and is from the August 4, 1981 issue.

I'd love to find out more about this photo shoot. This pic is probably my favorite of all the Indy pics and it is fairly rare. I did notice that HF is wearing the same pants during the shooting of the Bantu Wind scenes.

As someone who has done extensive research on the gunbelt buckles, I will say that this is Raiders gear, since the buckle is "C" shaped (rounded) and not square like in TOD and LC.

Just to make a point, I don't think the Raiders strap was exactly 1 inch in width. I believe the TOD and LC straps were 1in though. It looks more like 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 inch in the film. I am almost sure of this - compare Raiders shots of the strap width vs. the belt width, then look at the other films.

Also, if the strap and buckle came from Europe, it would have most likely been measured in the metric scale. The closest size of center-bar buckles that come from Europe are 30mm, which is smack-dab in the middle between 1-1/8in and 1-1/4in.

This picture could have the actual bagstrap, and remember that he wears his bag backwards in the Cairo fight scenes, therefore hiding the buckle! Also, if the camera is zoomed in and he is leaning foward, it would make the strap appear wider.

Uh-oh...I've stirred the hive now! Go easy on me! 8-[

There is NO question at all anymore if this is Raiders gear since there was no TOD or LC gear in 1981.

True. My thoughts too. I've never seen any proof to the theory this is just a belt with no bag since they forgot his bag for the photo shoot. I see no reason why it's not the Raiders bag and bag strap with the bag being hidden in the pic.

There's only a few select shots that the bag is backwards in the Cairo fight, but he could have done it here too I guess.

As for the size. If the perspective was that great to make the strap look as big as it does, it should look the correct size at his side which it doesn't. What ever it is it looks like it has grooves. :)

I was also wondering what that white half circle of a line is inside his left jacket. That and the light spot on the out side of his jacket down by the holster.

Well I'm a little less experienced at this sort of examination, however it reminds me a WHOLE lot of my first bag strap, which was a belt...

It looks to me to be the leather at the top of his inside pocket.
Isn't that a TAG whip holder?
Hey, it looks just like it! Oh wait, that's how it's supposed to look. [/quote]

  Hey even though the pants kinda look weird they do look like similar hole patterns and stains compared to the pants Indy is wearing in the scene on the ship in "Raiders". Ya know? I mean the bit where Indy is laying down and being ministered to by his girl. With his shirt off. Just a thought. Anyone?

I believe you are seeing the leather trim of his inside pocket. On the other side, I think you are seeing the split of the action pleat part in the jacket. You can see his shirt through it, hence the "light" spot to which you are referring.

I also wanted to mention the dimensions of that pocket that we see (his right) seems to be the current Wested size, i.e. much taller than wide. It could just be the lens distorted it a bit, which could answer for the wide strap, too. Just my opinion. I know the Raiders pockets were slightly closer to square than these appear.

have a nice day.

Ok, I can see that now. At least the pocket. Maybe the flap. It is kind of the color of his shirt, though it's a really odd shape, but that's probably what it is.

Taz: I think some one mentioned that earlier. (Bantu Wind scene) I'll have to check it out.
