New Kind of Bash

Post by T.E. Lawrence »

Was out in the AZ dez and wanted to take a pic of the amazing stars - I needed a long expossure to get it.... A great Camera needs a great tripod which I did not have with me so I used my head ... or at least what goes on my head

That is an amazing photo. I had no idea you could see that sort of effect, that Milky Way-effect, from earth, with or without a camera. Incredible.

Fantastic, T.E.! But that wouldn't make it much of a tripod, now would it? It's more of a hatpod!

Wow! Great photos. Many years ago, one of my first assignments in the Army, I was stationed at Fort Huachuca, AZ. ...right on the bordr with Mexico (talk about adventure-land: Geronimo, Cochise, Panch Villa..I actually rode in a horse cav troop)The stars at night were amazing!

I have a cabin up in the mountains near Prescott, Arizona. We're at about 7000 feet and the stars at night are incredible here. It's amazing how many you can see. Not at all like the visibility -- or lack thereof -- back home in Phoenix.

I am guessing this was BEFORE you came to Scotland, right? (judging by the beard!)

Ingenious solution - obviously if I had been there the hat would have been spared and it would be a Ken's-head-pod instead ;)

As you know I am always so amazed at the shots you manage to get and esepcially considering the conditions you get them in. This is no exception! It looks just like a matt painting!

Now that is using your head, T.E.,...(bad pun required! )
Would you care to give any amateur shutterbugs exposure time, or film speed on a picture like this?

I'm glad every one likes the picks. It seems the main question is the expossure time. I think I only had it open for about 30 seconds to avoid blur from the earth rotation. I kranked the gamma in post just to see some detail in the blacks because I was not sure haw it would look over the i-net. but that is very close to what it looked like. This pic was taken off the I-10 at the "Dome Rock" turn out and I swere we parked RIGHT UNDER the MilkyWay. We just looked up for an hour and thought , "God is Good".
KEN-
Actually this pic was taken last week and that is my AB hat that I had delivered to your flat while I was there. - I am growing the beard back for the pick up shots here in CA.

...another quick question.
Aperture setting? Do you have it open all the way to take in as much light as possible or is the exposure time doing it for you?

Thank you.

The Ap is OPEN OPEN OPEN,

Thanks Shanghi but the beard makes me feel too old so once the film wraps so does the beard.

Thats what I said, but I think Jonathan is right - a beard tends to make a person look older. Personally I wish I could grow a proper one, but hats how life goes. When you want to grow a beard and look older you cant, and by the time you can, you dont want it.

It's the beard itself not the grey -- that's what Photoshop is for.

It's not grey, T.E. It's REAL REAL light brown...at least that's what I tell the kids when they ask about my 'stache. 8-[ High regards! Michaelson

Not older T.E., perhaps more distinguished though. I wish my current employer would let me grow a beard, because man do I hate shaving everyday.
