Mad Dog Hats

Post by schorsch »

I hope this doesn't break any rules about ebay posts, since I'm not going to link to the item(s)...

Has anyone seen the "Indiana Jones Hat" that is almost always up on ebay by "Mad Dog Hats?" It is insanely cheap. Do you get what you pay for? I'm just starting down this long and expensive road (I'm customizing an LLBean shirt, I have an MKVII with a TAG strap, I'm getting Carolina Huskers) and I've been thinking about the Fedora as a long-term possibility. I imagine with an item like this that you really should go for the quality.

Anyone here buy one of the "OVER 3590+ INDY HATS SOLD ON EBAY !!"?

This fedora looks like it is one of those "Offical Lucasfilm Licsened" hats that are usually 'shunned upon' by gear-heads. It's the same as the Disney feodras that are sold at the theme parks, but are best known as "Dorfmans". Lots of times, on EBAY, people will put these hats on and claim "Authentic Reproduction!" or "Just like the one wore in all three films!".

If your looking for a long lasting hat in general, and a good qaulity one, don't go for this (my opnion).

Yep. They're the licensed hats, the same ones you can find in any hat shop that carries "Indy" hats. I got to look at one of these up close again in a hat shop last weekend and almost laughed about how I so desperately wanted one of these when I was a kid. If you're on a tight budget, you're better off saving up some extra pennies for an Akubra Standard Federation. If you want to invest in something really good, you can't go wrong with the beaver AdventureBilt, though you'll have to wait until Fedora is back online due to the hurricane.

Something else about Mad Dog hats... I tried sending him an e-mail to ask him some questions about a different product and the mail just kept bouncing back. I figure if I can't get through to a vendor to ask questions in order to get basic answers, then the vendor's not going to get me as a customer.

I recently bought an Indy hat from Mad Dog. They're great to do business with, but the hat was is a disappointment if you're looking for something that's screen-accurate as said above. The crown is shorter and more tapered than the HJ fedora, and it isn't really even a fedora; the brim in the back isn't turned up, so it has more of a "outback hat" look than a traditional fedora. But the biggest problem I had with it was the cheesy "Indiana Jones" plate that's glued through the ribbon. It makes a $85 hat look like any other piece of movie memorablia.

That's one deep center dent.
