Taking a cue from Mr. Michaelson, this kid ordered the L.L. Bean cotton poplin field shirt with the intent to dye the fabric black (might as well--Indy-ish colors were sold out, anyway. Light blue was all they had).
So, parked in front of the community area tube with "Ghostbusters" and "Treasure of the Peacock's Eye" as a double feature, I swapped out the buttons for black ones, and as soon as I was satisfied that the whole of the barracks was asleep; to the laundry room with salt and RIT dye I went.
The dye took well, and I then gave the machine a double rinse out. Nothing is worse than finding your nice white Good Humorman uniform turned gray due to some clown before you.
Well, it was almost perfect. For some reason, the thread that holds this bad boy together is dye resistant, and the sky blue stitching was a real eye-sore. It was a job for--the dry-erase marker.
An all-night project, coupled with downing a few White Russians and getting goofy off of marker fumes ensured that this kid was out like a light once the shirt was squared away with it's new look.
Let's be careful out there.
