Yes indeed. Today called for the willis and geiger safari hat, with chin strap. They work!! Tried a brown fedora first, but I could not pull it down far enough to keep it on. This chin strap has a little bead on it, so you can pull that dude up tight under the chin and your head would have to come off in order for the hat to leave. I may offer the Hurricane Indy for our Southern fans. Michaelson, seems like your old Bushman came with hooks for a strap. You could use some spare laces from your Aldens. We are still safe, sound, and wet down here. The worse is yet to come for us, so if you guys do not hear from me for a few days, our electricity may be off due to the storms. regards, Fedora

Hang in there, Steve! Worse case scenario, you could always makeshift a raft out of hat blocks. That way you can carry your trade with you downstream!

Stay safe and dry and check in with us when this thing blows over.

We were just put under a curfew. Anyone seen out, on the roads, etc, will be arrested pronto!! All mobile home occupants must evacuate, and this is being enforced by the cops and the volunteer fire deparatment. I think I am in for a long night. I just hope my hatshop/camper isn't blown away!! I am soaked(all except my head) from moving my hat blocks, brim flanges, hat bodies, supplies etc inside the house. Oh, the partially finished and finished hats too! And my guitars, and my new Bose sound system. I left all the vintage hat irons out there. They are so heavy even a tornado would leave them alone. So, unless the brick home goes, the hat trade is safe. Fedora

Ooops. Never mind. The weather radio just went off...they've re-issued a flood watch for us...so it's coming. Fun fun fun.

Whew! What a relief! I looked up Columbus, MS on our mapping software it looked like it was directly in the path of angry Katrina! It is due north of Mobile. I suppose she weakened by the time it reached there. I am glad to hear that Steve and his family are OK.

Also, my heart goes out to the entire MS Delta region. I pray that everyone is OK and that everyone gets through this with the least amount of pain.

No duct tape or chin straps -- just follow Harrison Ford's example from the Making of Raiders video -- staple the hat to your head!

Thank you for the word, Marc. I tried calling earlier today, but couldn't get through. I'm glad they got through it. I'm also heartbroken for those who recieved the wrath of Katrina. I can't even imagine... it almost seems unreal...

I spoke with Fedora last night by phone. He had lost power 4-6 hours earlier but everyone was OK. Lots of wind and rain but nothing more scary than that.

The authorites had warned everyone to stay inside and definitely not travel.

Steve is okay. I just talked with someone from his family on the phone and they weathered the storm. I made it brief, since Steve wasn't there at the moment, so I don't know what their current conditions are, but if the phone works, I take that as a good sign.

I was wondering the same thing. I know Michaelson's only 3 or so hours away from Fedora as the crow flies and we was fine last I checked. Apart from that, however, I don't know who else may have been in the storm's path.

After seeing all of the devistation now, it is heart-wrenching. So much loss. At least the death toll is at a minimum. That could have been quite a bit worse. My heart goes out to all of those that have lost so much, but thank God that they still have their lives and families.
Steve, glad to hear all is well in your neck of the woods. To Steve, and all of our Southern Families, be safe, and God bless. We are thinking about you.

I'm glad to hear that Steve & his family are OK. I hope he didn't receive too much damage from Katrina. We've been running story after story this morning about all the death & destruction that was caused by this disaster & it is truly heart wrenching. My prayers go out to all the survivors, many who've lost family & everything they own. It's a bad situation. It really makes you thankful for what you have.

Wed AM. I called and Steve / Fedora he was out. They have no power and the best guess is Friday before the power will be on. They all are doing ok! Minor roof damage to there home.

All the best to Steve and his family, and anyone else who's stuck in this. Here in Southern Ohio, we've had nonstop rain for days and have been under flood watches. I can only imagine what you folks south of us are going through.

The irony is that just before this, we were praying for rain, as Meigs County, (the neighboring county I live less than a quarter mile from,) is suffering from the worst drought it's hat in years.

Somehow, I don't think this is what the farmers had in mine.

Stay safe, dry, and warm folks! We're thinking about you!

Of course, there is an upside to this forum... Whenever something good happens we know someone there. But even in tragidy, we know someone there and are happy to hear from them and that they are alive and well. I know it is hard to lose everything one owns, but at least they haven't lost their life or family. And for those who have had that great loss, we offer our prayers.

I was watching this mess on TV and called down yesterday to basically tell Steve to forget about my hat until this was over. He wasn't there but the woman who answered said that the power was still out.
We had an ice storm a few years back, and our power was out for eight days. It was a bummer. I told them to hang in there and that we know they are dealing with a lot. Steve, I hope you're not trudging through a mess to get our hats out right now. We can wait. Stay strong.

I know he is all right, but I will feel a lot better once Steve checks in.

I spoke to Steve's mom today and they got the power back on. She will need a new roof and she lost all the food in the freezer. The main thing they all are ok!

I just got off the phone my sister who just got off the phone with a family friend. My cousins in Biloxi are ok. The house appears to be still standing but they're not sure in what condition. However, the bridge that they use to get into town is completely gone - only the pilings are left. Thank the good Lord they're ok and thanks for all your prayers and thoughts. Best Regards.

My uncle and aunt have lost their home in New Orleans. They were fortunately out of harm's way in Vicksburg, but I cannot imagine what they must be going through.

My daughter and son-in-law passed through here on their way from Houston to DragonCon (yes, out of their way, but they had a friend fly into Nashville, and they picked him up there.)

They have a friend currently staying with them now who left New Orleans during the first evacuation order, and has not only lost everything he owns (house took the direct hit of the storm, including flooding), but has lost his job (he's a lawyer in Federal Court) as the office went under, and his boss up and left the State with no plans on returning. So, he's stuck in Houston with only his car and the clothes on his back, and no word on what, if anything, is going to be there when he goes back.

Apparently the lawlessness began WELL before the storm actually hit, as there were two attempts to break into his house WHEN HE WAS STILL THERE by roaming gangs. They didn't get in, but who knows what's left now?

I am so ashamed of my country when I hear things like that .

It's a case of the few people who will take advantage of anything for their own gains versus the many people who put themselves aside for the sake of helping others.

Ok guys I am finally back in the saddle. I was much farther north than where the hurricane came ashore, but we got 90 mile an hour winds here and hundreds of trees were blown onto the power lines. We were told it might be a week before we got ours back, so I hightailed it north to a hotel room that had air conditioning. I got home last night and the power had come on earlier yesterday. I appreciate the concern, but we are nothing like our southernmost neighbors. I have a friend in Gulfport who refused to leave as his wife manages a retirement home, or village and they would not leave the old folks there. Their house was totally destroyed with them in it, with some brick structures falling through the roof, right on top of them. They survived though although with some injuries. I think this one was even worse than Camille, back in 69. My friend from Gulfport said he went out to look and help and saw bodies lying everywhere, partially buried in sand, etc. Pretty grisly site he says. No surprise he is moving to Casper Wy this weekend!! I think he has had enough of the coast and the hurricanes. Ok, time to get to work. I am behind!!! regards, Steve
