Now before we even begin, pull your minds out of the gutter

What I mean is now that I have started working and thus getting some extra money to spend, I'm thinking about purchasing a whip (my current Disney whip just isn't cutting it). I'm not looking to spend a lot of $$$ or hours upon hours cracking it everyday, just something that looks like Indy's and if I'm feeling ambitous, to take it out and try a few cracks every now and then. That being said I'm leaning towards the Indy-on-a-budget whip by Winrich (unless anyone else has any other suggesstions). My question is now would I be better off with an 8 or 10ft whip? I know that the whips varied in size from scene to scene, movie to movie. I also know that the standard size hanging from the belt was 8ft to give it a nice coil. If I am going to be cracking it, what size would I best be better off with. Basicaly what it comes to is something for apperance and usability. Thanks in advance.

I think that for occasional cracking you would get just as much, if not more, enjoyment out of the 8 foot whip as you would a 10 foot whip. I also like to think that the IOAB bullwhip design is best for whips 8 feet long and less, though I have made some 9 and 10 footers that cracked fine.

With the IOAB whip I'm kind of looking forward to the Halloween season as I was inundated with orders for whips last year. Of course, last Halloween an 8-footer was $60, so that probably helped get a few of them sold. I hope to have some IOABs in stock through September and October, and that might help them get sold, too. I bet if I were really smart I would have an IOAB on Ebay every week; if anything it could give Wayne Grady a run for his money

This topic has been discussed many times. May I suggest using the search button. But my recommendation and my opinion, an 8 footer is by far most versatile vs. the performance of a 10 footer. A 10 footer is most graceful in throwing, it's elegant. But on the other hand, an 8 foot whip you can quickly master, it can also lend itself to quick multi-cracking techniques. Paired with another 8 footer you can do double handed cracks much easier than the clumsier 10 foot or longer bullwhip. Take it from me, my first three bullwhips were 10 footers. My whip cracking skills quickly improved once I added 6 and 8 footers into my collection. After awhile, those 10 footers just stayed in my bag in favor of the shorter whips. There was so much more you can do with those shorter bullwhips.

But it's not just my opinion. Do a search in the bullwhip section and you will see that it's quite a common theme.

Most of all, just enjoy the experience of learning....

Neri, I have an 8 foot IOAB prototype from Adam which is a great whip to learn on! Unfortunately, I don't have a good space for cracking it since I moved, but it was easy to learn on and cracks like a canon once you get it going.

I don't have an 8 footer to compare with, but I got the first generation IOAB aswell. A 9 footer that I'm very happy with. Adam has improved the design even further since and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. It's a great first whip for a price you can't beat.

I have a 10ft., and maybe I wont get that circus-job, but it cracks the S.h## out of You - like a gunshoot + it curls nicely hanging in the whipholder.

So from a "Indy-amateur" point of wiev the 10ft. is really nice.

Actually, I think you have this a little backwards. The whip that Indy carried on his belt was a 10 footer as it is a little more impressive looking while it is coiled up. When Indy was going to actually crack his whip, as in the streets of Cairo scene, he used an 8 footer.

He used the 8 footer because it is easier to handle and you can do more with it. So, if you intend to just look at it, a 10 footer is the best option. If you actually intend to crack it, take a tip from Indy and get an 8 footer.

When I recently ordered a David Morgan, I had to decide on a length, also. I chose an 8 footer. I wanted to be able to enjoy using it for as many types of cracks as possible. I also thought, when waching the movies, can you really tell just by looking if Indy has an 8 or 10 footer coiled on his belt. I think that I would have to pause the dvd and stare at it and try to count the coils to be able to tell. I still might not be able to. I think the 8 footer is the best length.

Thanks again for the opinions. I still might hold out for a few weeks or so in the actual purchase, but I'm serious about getting an Indy whip sometime soon. All the whips (2-3) that I have ever owned were decroative and never looked anything like Indy's.

The funny part is I didn't start saying/typing things backwards until that movie came out .

I'm another one of the 10 foot converts. My first was a 10, followed by a 6 and 8 foot both. The 10 footer, I figured out the Horizontal fairly fast, but that sucker took me a LOOOOOONG time to master a circus crack. It's a HUGE whip when doing a circus crack. The 8 footer is definately more useable. And the 6 foot we have, that's probably my favorite now. I can do so much more with that 6 foot than the 8 or 10. Learning the cracks is much easier on the 8, and even more so on the 6.

But as a nod to the 10, in cracking out a horizontal, it's definately LOUD!

Pulling that 10' of leather up back and over is scary at first. but its probably my favorite one to do with it now.

I'm hoping to add an 8' Morgan for the best of both worlds.

So now that I have decided to go ahead and purchase the IOAB whip (with the many thanks to you guys ), which color should I get? Which color is most screen accurate, medium brown or dark brown? I know that with time the leather will darken up, but I'm curious as to see what you guys think. Thanks again for the help guys (and gals).

I have the medium brown and love the color of it. In fact, you can see a picture of the one I have on his website. The dark brown looks too dark to me.

Hey Indiana Neri,

As Bink said, medium brown has been the most popular, and is generally the most screen-accurate.

Once you start using the whip I don't think it will darken to the same degree as natural kangaroo. Has anyone out there noticed that there medium brown IOAB has darkened since they got it? Usually cowhide doesn't darken that much.
