Wested Mods

I'll be visiting England in about two months and the wife has promised to let us stop by the factory to purchase a jacket.
It seems that there's a thread to just about each and every mod out there, which makes deciding which is best a bit overwhelming.
So, I put it this way....
If you were going to order a Wested tomorrow, which mods would you have it made with and why?

Well, I added an extra inside pocket to mine, I figured that it would add a bit more drape to the jacket. (plus you can never have too many pockets):P
Of course you'd also want X-Box stitching on the side strap, it just makes for a more sturdy garment.
That is all I would add.

I would request no inside facing along the zipper. The movie jackets didn't have it.
No had warmer pockets. I don't use them
Thats pretty much it.

I like tapered sleeves and underarm gussets. I would order minimal facing on the inside pockets. But check out the normal pockets and see if you like it.
Your sizing will be right if you go to the shop so that's not a problem. Your main one might be trying not buy one off the rail if you really want a custom fit! But if there is one that fits there is nothing wrong with that either! and you get to take it wth you.
Have fun.

Not to steal your post, res (cool movie BTW
), but I think an even better question would be "What mods would it take to make the Wested jacket screen accurate?" At least, that's what I'd like to know in case I decide to get another Wested
.
Now back to your regularly schedualed program....

Get the square/rectangular rings for the straps, rather than D-rings. I don't know which are screen accurate, but I find the D-rings on my goatskin a pain because the straps slip a bit.
Also I got one jacket without under arm gussets & one with double gussets ("Jagger Lips"). The double gusset jacket has far better range of arm movement IMO, without causing the jacket bottom to go up & down, which was what I wanted, as I wore my jacket horse riding.
Also consider what you want from the leather.
I got Goatskin because the British weather is rainy quite alot & goat has good water resistant properties; but I wish I'd got Lamb because it isn't as warm (again for wearing riding) & Goat whilst being nice & accurate as a leather used for jackets from that period, does have a different look in the way it hangs, creases & grain to the screen jackets in Lamb.
Remember to cross your arms over with the jacket done up to see if the size versus the back seam is comfortable for you
Good luck!

Skippy: that's odd...ive always been under the impression that goat was warmer than lamb. there's countless posts around that say things to that affect.
sure that isnt a 'grass is always greener' way of thinking?

I think he meant he wished he got the lamb because it wasn't as warm as the goat. Apparently he finds the goat too warm?
I can wear my goat right up to about 60 degrees. Beyond that I find it to warm for any jacket. I think the goat is an excellent compromise between screen accuracy and toughness.

I've been happy wearing a lamb up to about 22c / 70f.

Ive worn my wested cow in 80 degree heat with no problems.
The D rings dont slip at all, but they probably would with other leathers.
If i were to order one tomorrow, I would get 2 inside pockets, underarm
gussets, and box stitching on the side straps. I forgot to tell them to add
the box stitches when i bought it and every time i put it on I feel like hitting my self in the head.

Adam

J_weaver: oh whoops! sorry...bit of a misinterpretation
and you can only wear your goat up to 60f? that's only around 15c right? that's still fairly cold...is the goat really THAT warm?

I wish I had them put a zipper on the inside pocket. I'm sure it's not screen accurate, but if you put something in there that is slightly weighty, the pocket opening sags and doesnt look right from the outside.

Dre, I think your right about the temp. Honestly, I think a lot of which leather is confortable at what temp really depends on the person. Like for me personally, much beyond 60 is just too warm for a jacket of any sort. I don't think that you'll find the goat to be too warm. Come to think about it I've worn my jacket a few times when it was pouring the rain and about 75f. I was a little warm, but not overly so. Keep in mind guys that I tend to run a little hot anyway.

temple jacket, I like the length. I have a both temple and raiders. Comparing the two is like saying who your favorite child is, having said that, the temple jacket is an inch longer than the raiders, and it does make a difference as to comfort. That is my subjective feeling about it. don't get me wrong I love my raiders jacket. But I find myself wearing the temple jacket much much more.

oh yeah, lambskin. Definitey lamb. It is not as durable as my goat skin jacket. but ya gotta love wearing the lamb. and eating it is good to!
I love a rack of lamb!!!

As long as you don't try to eat your jacket.
Modifications? How about extra mint sauce?

What happens when you ask Peter for your lamb extra rare?

Skippy's reminder is an important one: If you will really be using the jacket in some fashion that requires a lot of big movement (like Skippy's horseback riding) then be sure that the upper back is not too tight.

BTW, I'd go for handwarmer pockets(which are standard), I've always got to put my hands somewhere, I just can't let them hang at my side.

I'm interested in the answer to that myself...

Merrick--Ref zipper on inside pocket...try the "quick fix"---ie, stick on velcro strips

Since you'll actually be there you'll get to see some of the differences and go from there.
But I'd go with x-box stitching, minimal or no facing on the zip, extending the zip all the way down w/o the pull showing, and may be the 80's fit depending on the look you want.
Best,
Herr Jones

What is this "80's fit?"

As I understand it, it's a slightly closer "cut" - more form fitting, less baggy.

Welcome Dave!
Like Doug said the 80's fit is somewhat closer fitting than the regular fit. However, I don't think anyone knows how much of a difference there really is.
