I intend to buy a David Morgan bullwhip but I read in this forum that the quality of kangaroo hide nowadays is very pour due
to drought. I want my bullwhip to be made from kangaroo hide because I'm a screen accurate freak, so the reason I'm writing
this thread is because I want to ask if anyone has bought a whip of this kind from David Morgan recently and what does he
think about it. Is he satisfied from its quality? :

I read somewhere that Paul Stenhouse has stopped whipmaking for a while because he couldn't find kangaroo hide to meet his
standards. What about David Morgan? Has he better providers since he is more years in the business? Has he made greater
stock or what? What do you guys think? I don't want in any case to attaint anyone's name but when I'm going to pay about
$600 I have the right to know a couple of things. Of course, the best way is to ask directly to David Morgan's and that's
what I'll do next but first I want to ask you guys, since you seem to know more things than I do and because you are not
going to answer fearing that your reply might deprive a sell.

IMHO David Morgan has the best supply of natural tan kangaroo hide in the business. He is extremely selective in the hides that he accepts from tanners in Australia; if they don't meet his high standards the hides are returned.

I bought a 10 foot Morgan recently and the quality of the kangaroo in the whip was not an issue in the least.

Just to add to what Adam said, Mr. Morgan still has a good (but limited)supply of first grade kangaroo hide. However, he's stopped selling the heavy hides he likes to use for the bullwhips, until he gets more hides from Packers.(Australia's biggest Tannery).

He said that if he can't get more HEAVY hides, (the heavy kangaroo hide is part of the design parameters for his wips), then he rather stop making whips, instead of using thinner skins.

If you'd like a Morgan, I'd say don't hesitate and go for it!

From what David told me, he has an in with Packer, and can get the good skins. I don't have that in, and a deal I was working fell through with Bute Tannery down under. So, since I can't get the good ones from my sources (such as Hardtke), I don't want to make something that I wouldn't be happy with.

Yes, I'm that much of a critic of my work. The first person I make happy when filling orders is myself! If the quality comes back up, I'll consider it, but cowhide is working out alright, too. That, and I'm spending more time watching my daughter grow up, which is infinitely more rewarding in the long run.
