I just wanted to know peoples opinions of the 'Official Lucasfilm Indiana Jones Hat' shown here:

Image

I wanted to know: Is it any good? Is it Crushable? Is it accurate in size? Is it the right coulour? Does the badge leave a large hole in the ribbon when removed? Does it have a decent sweat band? If it good value for money? How would you rate it for a Teen fan on a budget?

Regards
Luke

Luke, it's not a particular favorite among the troops here, but you're talking to folks who have been on a steady diet of the Adventurebilt hats, and it's no comparison. The hat you're considering, to answer your last sentence, is just fine. The teardrop top bash is wrong, but good enough for now. No, the pin is a straight pin just stuck through the ribbon, and will leave no hole when removed. It's been the standard on these hats since the 1980's. The color is dark, but still workable. The dimensions are incorrect, but still useable for your requirements.

It is a serviceable hat for your particular needs.

Its a good starter hat *if* you just want it as a novelty item and are not going to wear it much. These things taper and shrink like crazy.

If you really want a good hat without breaking the bank there are some better, still affordable, choices available IMO.

EDIT: What Michaelson said...

What is the current price on this one, Lukmas? I haven't looked for a while.

For comparison, HatsDirect has the Akubra Federation at around $76 (U.S. dollars, that is. The dollars shown on the website are in Australian dolloars, and must be converted) plus shipping, which IS correct in dimensions, and can be shaped and bashed to YOUR design as an Indy fedora. The color is still a bit dar, but everything else works great. MUCH better hat, and one you can wear for literally years, and have rebuilt and rebashed by the professionals here at the site.

Guess it depends on whether you are looking at the "wool" or "fur" hat. If, wool, thats about as cheap as you can get in an Indy hat, around $35.00. The felt goes for around 95.00 (check Ebay, but remember you get what you pay for and both of these will begin to shrink and taper immediately! I know from experience having gotten them when that was all there was)

You can go for the Akubra as M mentioned, for just a tad more and its a better hat.

Hey Luke,

I'm a teen fan on a budget, and I just saved up for the Akubra. I've owned a couple of those official hats in the past, and I really don't think that they can compare much, if not at all, with the Akubra.

Again, it is a good starter hat, but why not just save up a little more and get something that will last you longer?

The Akubra is the best fedora I've owned in 6 years.

In Christ,
Shane

It's an okay hat. I got one a little over a year ago. What bothered me was that it's tapered and it has the teardrop bash, as Michaelson mentioned. There's no liner, but it's not meant to be a high quality hat. Mine was fairly easy to shape with some steam at first, but I wore it in the rain once and now it's flimsy.

I don't wear it anymore since I got my Adventurebilt, but it's still a good beginning hat.

The official hat is produced by Dorfman Pacific. They make two types - the wool felt and fur felt. The wool felt is the cheaper of the two both in terms of construction/durability and price. The fur felt isn't too bad, but as Michaelson said, the bash is incorrect.

They're good starter hats for someone on a budget. Or as a collectable. But if you're looking for a fedora to last a while, go fur felt instead of wool. And like they said, an Akubra is probably the next up the line in terms of price and durability, and many people that have them enjoy them a lot. Fedoras are like cars. You have Chevys and Cadilacs both. Depending on your wants, and pocketbook requirements, you can make your selections. Remember, a $30 fedora is a $30 fedora and a $400 fedora is a $400 fedora. :)

I think these are some good pictures with my Akubra. I particularly like the 2nd one:

No problem. That's why we're here, to help. But it's probably good to read up on fedoras on IndyGear's main page, and the FAQ's about fedoras on IndyGear as well. A lot of that information is good and still valid. That will give you more "ammo" when asking a question here. And it's also better to try not to post multiple questions in multiple threads all at once. You're new, so we'll let you live.

Seriously, don't be afraid to ask a question, but also try to research it a bit first as a lot of Newbie questions are already out there. Welcome to the fun of Indygear and we hope you stay awhile!

My apologies, Lukmas; that was a bit rude on my part.

I meant it as more of a poke at VP, but he doesn't seem to have taken the bait...

Luke - save up for a better hat (like the Akubra reg. Fed, or go with Strider's excellent offer)... you'll be happy you did. Don't succumb to the evil of the Dorkman-Horrific "official" Indy hat. :)

VP - great link! Space general, you and not equal to I think severe.
