Canyon's got a brand new bag!

Post by Canyon »

Hey there!

You may remember some time ago this thread.

Well, I've managed to track down one of these bags. :D I got it on Saturday when I was in a travel clinic with a friend.

It's very similar to an MKvii, except it has a zip under the flap and has two more poppers.

Here are some pictures:

Here it is!

Pretty nifty clips, huh?

As an added bonus, it even has Indy's name on it!

Here are some comparison shots:

It's a pretty awesome bag and was the last one there. Please let me know what you think.

VERY nice bag, canyon. Congrats! :D

So what do you say - is there more space in that bag or is it the same like in our MKs?

Happy "adventuring" with your new bag,

I'd say thats a very nice bag indeed! Now you can color coordinate between the khaki and olive. LOL. I'm sure it will be no time before you will have had many adventures with Canyons "brand new bag".

Good luck

That is a great bag! I'm tempted to ask whether you have shoes that match!? I would get one of these. I think it's great that some piece of Indy Gear has been commercialized, if you will. I like thinking that some people out there are carrying these bags, without knowing the connection to the film. The bag, the strap, the zippers are all great. I do with it had a better mechanism to how it connects to the bag. Great find. Canyon!

Great looking bag, Canyon !
I like the zipper feature ... ever since I got my MKvii, been wondering how I will keep stuff from falling/bouncing out during my own 'adventures' ...

p.s. ... what is a "popper"?

Yeah, I thought that bag looked pretty cool when I saw that thread. Nice to have a zipper to make sure stuff doesn't come out. The back pocket(s) are kind of like the MKVI. I guess those moved inside the back on the MKVII.

Actually Canyon's bag is more synonymous with an MKVI, instead of an MKVII. I've been wanting to get one of these but they don't ship to the US.

You can easily get rid of that, someone on the board said that the proper way to remove something like that is use an electric shaver to, uh, shave the stitches.:P

Thanks for sharing, Canyon! :D

Would you mind getting a detailed shot of the vent umderneath?
I remember someone on the forum did shoot one or another photo of this detail, but you weren't able to see how close to the original it was.
(I thought it looked way better than the WPG version from those shots though, if it was the same bag as yours.)

Hi Canyon,

How hard or easy do you think it would be to swap out the web strap for a leather one then?

About 42 inches. :)

Quite difficult, as there are no rungs to thread the strap through (as you can see from the side angle photo).

Looks like you'd have to put the leather straps through the part where the strap is, but I wonder if there'd be too thin to thread the leather through.

Its kind of hard to explain, but would it be possible to remove (cut if you have to) the webbing and attach the leather strap to the clips? Does anyone understand what I'm trying to say?

J_Weaver, sorry for the late reply.

It think it would be possible, but you would have to have a very narrow ended strap.

Does this make sense?

Canyon,

You could actually cut the metal strap holders off of the webbed loop and replace them with the correct size "key rings". A simple brass type key ring you could thread the loop through and you would have the same shape rings that are on the MK VII. Does that make sense?

I wish I could draw you a diagram.

Good Luck

I was thinking the same thing. All you need are two large split rings of the same diameter as the original ones on a Mk VII. Just slip them on to the bag's webbing loops after cutting off the metal fittings to which the clips attach. Add your leather strap and bob's your uncle. Real easy fix.

"Bob's your uncle" is an old old bit of English vernacular. It goes back to the appointment of Arthur Balfour to a post of some sort in Ireland by his uncle, Robert somebody or another. So, "Bob's your uncle," evolved into a term to mean, "You're all set" or "You got it made" or, more casually, "There you go..."

So Canyon, were you looking to convert this to an Indy bag or just wanted to have a Indy like bag that's new?

Oh, BTW, I used to live in Bristol, it's still just down the road. However it's in Tennessee. ;)

If the metalwork is that cast bronze/brass stuff a couple of sharp whacks with a hammer will cause them to shatter. If not time to go find some bolt cutters!

If you're referring to that brass washed and antiqued cast "monkey metal," then yeah, that ought to be just the job.

There can only be one answer to that:

"I don't wanna talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! You mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! "

On topics, Canyon have you decided if you want to keep the webbing on your bag or will you try to mod it?

I was sort of thinking the same thing. I don't know how much these cost, but if it's for use as an Indy bag just get a WPG or an original if you can find one. If it's for general use that's fine too. Or if you can't stand mildew smelling things. ;)

It's mainly shooting the breeze.

However, if you look at it from our point of view US vendors bags cost $15 more than to you. Coupled with the fact the surplus stores are now few and far between here and Mk VII and Mk VI's are proving very difficult to get hold of.

We're trying to determine if this is a cost effective way to get a similar bag that we don't mind beating the h*ll out of at the right price.

Bumping this back up coz I just got one of these too!

I know it is a MkVi inspired bag, that being said I think the desert tan colour it is is just right, far more so than the green WPG repro. It is a cool little bag and I do mean little! No chance of getting a laptop in this baby not even the 12" Powerbook I've been lusting after! Someone really needs to come up with a laptop sized replica! :) I'm sure Indys bag looks bigger, almost the size of those map bags out there.

However this bag is cool, I've had no luck with genuine WW2 bags in the UK all the dealers here say a certain US person bought up all their stock (I Wonder who that Person miGht be?). So this is the cheapest alternative here.

The crossways divider inside got in the way so i cut the stitching away with a scalpel and took that out. Also the chest cord. I'm thinking about removing the embroidery but the stitches are not accesible fron the inside due to a double thickness of canvas around the bottom third of the bag. Will need to cut the stitches fron the front, time for the trusty scalpel again.

Looking closely at it I believe the whole additional top panel that houses the zipper might also be removable with a bit of gentle stitch slicing but am a little worried that I might detach the cover flap in the process. Not a big deal the zip does not hinder access to the bag a lot and it make it more secure.

The inside of the bag seems to have some sort of waterproof coating too like a thin sprayed on PVC or something.

BTW I got mine through:

http://www.trekdirect.co.uk/acatalog/On ... ls_27.html

Even though they say out of stock they do have them!

Now it needs kicking around a carpark and leaving out in the sun a bit to get some character it is too darn new!

KT
