Got this for 8 bucks from a surplus company

It would be easily converted to a leather strap with a few stitches

There is another strap that appears to be for going around the waist. Cannot decide whether to cuit it off or leave it.

The color is close and the size is almost identical.

Shadwell, That should work nicely. Well worn and broken in. No need to distress it. Now all you need is the leather TAG strap.

Cheers!

any advice re: the second strap? Should I just snip it?

You could do that. But if you can draw it up tight to the body of the bag that wouls be better. Then it remains useful at another time, yet is out of the way.

Cheers!

I have tried that, but it still hangs out there a bit. I am hesitant to just lop it off at this poiont.

By the way, I bought some brass snaps and replaced the old army snaps that you see in the pics. Hammering those snap rivets is hard. I fouled up an entire pack before I had success.

Looks a little more like a Mk vii now.

Looks good for $8 and some time and new snaps.
Hmm, don't know about the strap. I guess it's no great loss if you cut it for $8.

side strap.

the strap, which looped around the back of the bag and really served no function for me ( I am sure I wasn't going to secure this thing around my waist) was removed by me with scissors this monring. But I did leave enough of it to go back and stitch together and make a hook looop if needed at a leter time. Placing new snaps on is no easy thing. I went through at east 8 or 9 befire I realized I was using the tool in the wrong manner!

I gave it a wash today. I like the canvas strap a lot right now and am in no hurry to replace with leather, though I just might go ahead and buy one of todd's straps since I have about 20 bucks in my gear budget

Personally I'd go for a TAG strap as he will costomise it however you want. I like his buckle better too.
