I'm Bored...Fedora Questions

So I'm sitting here at work, and I am bored...so I decided to ask some questions regarding fedoras.

1. Is it harmfull to leave stiffener in a hat? Should the hat be "sat on" to make it floppy, or is the stiffener a-ok?

2. What other animals can/have they make hats out of?

3. Has anyone ever seen a stone hat holder? What do you think would be the most fitting style of hat holder for an Indy hat? (Stone, wood, plastic, etc.)

4. If a hat starts as a cone, then...shouldn't there be a little part in the center where a hole could start?

5. What is the most times have you hat to fully reblock a hat?

6. Has anyone ever tried dying a hat? If so, how did it turn out?

7. Do you think it's possible to convert a cowboy hat, into a 30's style Fedora?

8. How "floppy" is your fedora? What would you have to drop on it from 5 feet to make a dent? (Quarter, Golf Ball, Basketball, Brick)

9. How many hats are in your collection. Which is your fave? Which is the oldest?

10. How do you plan on re-blocking your AB, when Steve gets fed up and tells us all to eat dirt? :D

I think I'll take number 2 for $500 this time.

Otters, I believe. The animal with most hairs per square inch in the world. Someone has to fill in why they don't make them any more though, or if there ever was success with it. It does make sence to me though as both beavers and otters have pretty dense fur.

Otters!

:D

1-stiffner is always in your hat, steve told me once the hat gets reblockedand heat is used the hat becomes stiff once again.

2-I don't know that one.

3-I don't know this one either ( I have a couple of plastic hat stands).

4-good question , never thought of that one.

5-once ( ttwo different hats )

6-no

7-Petersbrothers (thats what there indy hat is)> I wouldn't get one if I was you. You may never recieve it.

8-first AB from five feet a dime, Herbert Johnson maybe the same , Petersbrothers a brick.

9-6 not counting dorfman hat shrunk ( my five year old plays with) 2 Adventurebilts , 1 Herbert Johnson , 2 Petersbrothers ( 1 brown , 1 grey ), 1 Ptersbrothers that they have highjacked for four and a half months now.
My favorite is the Adventurebilt and I wear it most of all. I have owned 3 others but are long gone now.

10-You had to bring this up , now I can't sleep at night ( thanks crazylegs :D ).

how that? I hope that kept you busy. :D

If I drop a quarter from one foot, it would make a dent in my AB.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:9. How many hats are in your collection. Which is your fave? Which is the oldest?
Two. My Adventurebilt is my favorite.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:10. How do you plan on re-blocking your AB, when Steve gets fed up and tells us all to eat dirt? :D
With one of these.

Stiffener's fine. You can sit on your hat, or knead it like dough in your hands to soften it up, if you like, but it's not essential. Felt hat stiffener won't hurt the hat, and it has been known to help a hat keep its shape over time.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:2. What other animals can/have they make hats out of?
The ones I know of are: Sheep (wool), Rabbit, Beaver.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:3. Has anyone ever seen a stone hat holder? What do you think would be the most fitting style of hat holder for an Indy hat? (Stone, wood, plastic, etc.)
Never seen one of those. A mannequin head will do fine, I have a couple plastic hat holders for the purpose. If you don't have any of these, store the hat upside down on its crown. Preferably in some kind of box.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:4. If a hat starts as a cone, then...shouldn't there be a little part in the center where a hole could start?
Sorry, can't answer this.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:5. What is the most times have you had to fully reblock a hat?
Once every so often. If it gets rained on and tapers really bad, a reblock could be necessary. It'll take a stovepipe shaped hat a while to taper without some sort of outside influence, like rainfall. I don't see you having to reblock a hat more than a couple times a year. If that.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:6. Has anyone ever tried dying a hat? If so, how did it turn out?
Never did this.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:7. Do you think it's possible to convert a cowboy hat, into a 30's style Fedora?
I think Dakota Ellison did something like that. I'll hunt and see if I can find the thread, but it is possible with the right knowledge, skills and tools.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:8. How "floppy" is your fedora? What would you have to drop on it from 5 feet to make a dent? (Quarter, Golf Ball, Basketball, Brick)
I'd only drop a brick on it if I didn't like the hat. My Adventurebilt is floppy enough to be responsive when shaping the crown/brim with my hands and no steam. A quarter wouldn't dent mine, I don't think. A golf ball would do it.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:9. How many hats are in your collection. Which is your fave? Which is the oldest?
I don't count ball caps as hats, sooo...I have 1 Adventurebilt, 1 Biltmore in a Frank Sinatra kind of style, and a grey bogie style hat. That's all the hats I have, and I wear the Adventurebilt the most. I wear the other hats when I am trying to impress someone, or am going to a social gathering.
crazylegsmurphy wrote:10. How do you plan on re-blocking your AB, when Steve gets fed up and tells us all to eat dirt? :D
Seeing as how that'll never happen....

Ok. If for some reason it DID...I'd probably end up talking to Optimo about it.

PS Tone: That avatar looks fantastic. You look just like Indy!

Indiana_Tone,

You mean that's NOT Ford?

I thought it was, only I couldn't figure out which scene had the Venetian blinds. (Venice?)

Man, you really DO look like Ford! Take advantage of it!

CLM:
I have 7 fedora in my collection. 1 Herbert Johnson Bowler, 1 straw Indy from Peter's Bros., 1 Gray Adams 1 tan Beaver Brand, 1 Black Biltmore Senator, 1 Mink colored Stetson withe a center bash and, 1 Original Licensed Stetson Indy fedora from 1984. (I was supprised to find that one buried in a closet at my folks house). I'd have to say that my favorite is my gray Adam fedora.

I have seen some Fedoras that my great uncle had that were made of mink. Soft and velvety. Unfortunately for me the man had a very tiny head and they would never fit my mellon.

Most of my hats could resist the coin test, but I think that a golf ball or the proverbial brick would sufficiently dent what I have except the bowler. The thing is like an armoured helmet.

JPENMAN:
I would have to agree with you on the sore subject of Peter's Bros. Once I had the order in they said 2 weeks and then disappeared. I had to repeatedly e-mail them to kick start the process. At one point the said that they were working on it on a Friday and said it would be shipping that nest Monday. Well I was being quite patient when I e-mailed them 2 weeks from that Monday to see where it was. There was a big oops there and it shipped right away. Sorry to say I didn't get the warm and fuzzy from their customer service. But, on a lighter note the Straw Indy I got is a great wearing hat for those warm days.

Cheers!

Answer to #7:

Ask Zues36! He has a hat I used to own. When I found it, it was a Beaver Blend Brand, wide brimmed gambler with a telescope bash. After some initial tweaking, and then a proper reblock from Fedora, it was a great 30's fedora!

Answer to #8:

I have some hats which are wonderfully floppy and soft, and others which are not.

Answer to #9:

Gee, I haven't really counted in a long time. I love hats. Almost all of them are classic styled hats of one kind or another, be it fedora, newsboy, derby/bowler, or other. I probably own a couple dozen vintage hats, easily, some which I've inherited from my grandfathers. I have vintage fedoras, newsboys, and even a nice Victorian top hat repro. I'd have to say, however, that my favourites are the two AdventureBilts I keep in rotation. They're like my vintage hats, but new! And they just look oh, so good!

Answer to #10:

I've been working on ways to clone Steve for my own nefarious reblocking needs when that day comes.

danieljones, I have been waiting for my indy custom now for 4 1/2 months. They have told me four times that they have shipped it and when it doesn't show up ,I call them up ( it starts all over again). Again they say they have shiiped it and I should get it at the end of this week. I guess this game will go on forever. I really think they lost my hat. They are the worst run place I have ever seen.

It took them 5 1/2 months to get that same hat when I first bought it in the first place. I paid for that hat and they have had it more then I have.

crazylegs,I like the way you think. A third Adventurebilt over a Petersbrothers( I'll take it). At this point I would take the old beat up hat I sent them ( steve would have that hat back to me in two weeks). I bought three hats and had one sent to steve for a reblock ( got that one back from steve ). I hope only for the worst for Pteresbrothers.
