Texas Jones also has some on his site if you don't want to go digging through a bunch of old belts at a surplus store.

I found a khaki web belt at a local army navy for $3.00, then bought some Rit dye in brown for a few dollars. I think for around $6.00 or so, I had a perfect brown web belt for less than the cost of shipping. Plus, it was fun to make my own.Pyroxene wrote: Where are you all finding the brown web belts? Thanks.

SJ is right. The brass plated is more screen accurate and will show distressing as the plating wears off and the silver metal underneath begins to show through.
The solid brass will dull, but a swipe or two with some brass cleaner and it will be brand new looking once again. If you want to keep it brand spankin' new looking forever, solid brass would be the way to go. For the distressed Indy look, brass plated is what you want.

That could just be reflection off well pollished brass too, unless there's some close-ups of the distressed buckle.
Here's where I ordered my belts.
http://www.georgia-outfitters.com/page49.shtml#
And a place to get solid brass buckles if you wanted. Though I'm not sure how to place an order there.

I believe it's beyond argument that the ROTLA - and ToD - buckles were brass plated and distressed to a silvery look. It has been discussed in several threads here. That's also the way they were offered by Noel Howard.IndyDoc wrote:That could just be reflection off well pollished brass too, unless there's some close-ups of the distressed buckle.
I wouldn't be too sure about the LC buckle, though - in some pics, the buckle appears to be distressed (solid) brass.

Easy-peasy on the shirt - just hose it down...Swindiana wrote:SJ;

I think I'll start with the first one, now that the GF is out of town and can't complain about ruining a perfectly fine color shirt.
Great shot!

We should all bow our heads to Aaron and The Indy Experience for the screenshot...
Never thought about that bag before ... finding the stickers would be an interesting project indeed!
Shorty, get our stuff!
VP, great brown and red belt pics!

Well, apart from being wet, I'm looking for a color closer to the MBA on my shirt. I think Wested has altered the color a slightly darker now, but I feel that mine is a bit on the light side to be accurate enough. Seing SJ's MBA shirt in real life is pretty much what convinced me...IndyDoc wrote:I'm not sure if your being serious or not Swindiana, but just leave your shirt alone! His is just wet.
Edit: Yeah, like SJ said....

That is a Gladstone bag, named after it's inventor, William Gladstone, a 19th Century English statesman. It became a very popular bag with the well-to-do. Doctors are depicted in almost any period movie or tv show carrying a Gladstone bag, hence, people referring to them as a "doctor's bag".
I understand that one of the recovered pieces from the Titanic is a Gladstone bag. Speaks well for it's construction that it could last all these years underwater. I would imagine that it belonged to one of the passengers that was traveling in the first class section.

Not to debate you, Bufflehead, but this web site says something a little different about the term Gladstone, and what consitutes a real Gladstone bag.Bufflehead Jones wrote:That is a Gladstone bag, named after it's inventor, William Gladstone, a 19th Century English statesman

I certainly won't vouch for this person's info, but they seem to know what they're talking about. Maybe it is like calling all tissues Kleenex, because these people obviously know leather, and they call it a Gladstone bag, too.
Tusting
But whatever they are called, I think I may have to track one of those down...
For those of you that will be at the Queen Mary summit, they sell repros of a bunch of different old travel stickers in the gift shop. Swindiana, I'd be more than happy to post pics of the one from the set I bought, if you're interested, or just shoot you the manufacturer info. I have no idea of they are even close to the ones on Indy's Gladstone bag, (You techno gearheads will have to help out here with a few good screen grabs) but they are pretty good repros and definately period.

I have a Gladstone Bag. It was made in Tuscany. I carry it everywhere as an overnight or weekend bag. I could post a pic, if you like. I will definitely bring it to the QM if I am able to attend.
If you click on this and make it big:
You can just about make it out under my Adventurebilt Hat, behind my Wested, and to the left of the fan.
It is the coolest bag and fits quite a bit of stuff in it.

Sorry, Shadwell55, didn't mean to highjack your thread!
One thing I've found with the repro belts is that they can be really thin, and I find that they continuously slip through the buckle. The official issue Marine Corps belt is the right shade of khaki for ROTLA and is much heavier duty than most Army Navy store versions. It comes with the gold anodized tip (which I can tell you from experience will distress to silver with time). They run $2.70 through the Navy-Marine Corps Exchange, but you have to be military to order through them. I will try to find the brand name.
I would be happy to pick them up for anyone interested, and ship them to you at cost. I can't imagine a belt would cost more than one or two dollars to ship. They are 100% cotton, so Hemingway's dye method would work, too.
Hemingway, regarding your Gladstone bag, I'd love to see some pics! Can you start a thread on your bag, with some more details?!

Awesome pic!
The sword kinda looks like one of those Oriental Katanas. My grandfather gave me his WWII Japanese sword that he had captured in the South Pacific when he was in the service. I believe he said he got it on the Island of Truck (spelling?).
Again, cool lookin' pic & thanks for posting!

dyeing my belt brown--and going over to the "Indy"
Fokls. Tomnight I took the plunbge and dyed my khaki web belt (the nice thick military issue variety that Mojave wrote about) to a dark brown color. I just placed it in the wash after "cooking" it on the stovetop. Cannot wait to see how it looks.
By the way, my wife thinks you guys have brainbwashed me. When I first started reading this site, I was only interested in the jacket. I told my wife as much and that I would never be a "hardcore" like I seem to have become. When I told her I was headed off to wal-mart for brown dye and did we have a pot that I could use for the dyeing, she shook her head and threatened to ban me from the site. I reassured her that I was only messing around with this stuff.
Now I find myself wanting more and more gear (the bag is next--really want one of those but need to save a little money as the jacket used all my gift money fron B'day) . I just used some LL Bean coupon dollars to buy the poplin field shirt--now I have to break it to her. She new I was buying a sale short from Bean, but I haven't told her of the style.
I even considerred making my own grail diary!
I told her I am constructing a halloween costume. I think I'll hold to that argument until she notices me wearing this stuff everyday. I am a college prof so I can get away with being "quirky" and with wearing adventure attire to work.

That has a familiar ring to it! My wife thinks I'm goofy. Being a professional archaeologist, though, I just keep insisting that is it purely professional interest!Shadwell wrote:By the way, my wife thinks you guys have brainbwashed me. Shadwell, just tell her it's nothing but a hobby! No biggie. I mean, you COULD be up on the roof wearing a pair of WW1 flying goggles and cap, shaking your fist at the neighbors, and yelling 'I'll get you next time, Red Baron!!!"
Well, at least not YET.....that's coming, but not at this time! 8-[

My hobbies
My wife thinks i am a weird guy anyway. I collect all sort fo things, but not consistently--political buttons, baseball caps, etc.
The Indy thing has snuck up on me. I teach southern and american history at a university in Monroe Louisiana, so being an academic I can get away with quirks.
Hunting and golf are huge around here and I always remind her that I could spend thousands on green fees or rifles and never be home with the kids, or I can watch Indy movies with the kids and collect Indy Gear.

belt dyeing success
By the way. Dyed the khaki belt dark brown. Looks fabulous and I am wearing it today. The brown web belt looks better with everyday work clothes, in my opinion, than the khaki belt.

I have had the same problem with the matirial falling appart. Does anyone know a way to keep this from happening other than not tightening the belt. After all it is a belt and its job is too keep your pants up. There must be some way to keep it from happening. Any suggestions would be great.both colors look great with the rest of the gear, but I tend to go for brown more since im going for raiders. but has anybody had any problem with there belt material falling apart due to tightening the belt tight?
Thanks

Where is it falling apart?
If it is where the buckle attaches, I just feed it with more belt to hang on to. Tightening that folding clasp a bit helps keep it in place if needed, no problemo.
Let me know what the trouble is and I might be able to help you out. I've been fiddling around with these type of belt quite a bit. My fun spare time...

I always thought that the buckle was just silver in color, period. I got a belt from beltoutlet.com with a nickel finish. Here it is: http://beltoutlet.com/fabbelbuy.html I loaned it to my friend, and she never gave it back (Indygear goes well with the ladies here). I recently acquired a TAG belt with distressed brass buckle. I personally liked the nickel finish more than the brass one.
