Should I take my Adventurebilt to Hawaii?

Well, I leave for the Big Island next Friday and I can't decide which hat to take. I think it's between my AB or Akubra Traveller. It's gonna be hot, humid, and probably rainy. Part of me says the Traveller is the practical choice since it's crushable (for the luggage bin on the plane), unlined (better for warm weather) and has a wider brim. Cheaper to replace too, if anything untoward should happen. But another part of me says how can I go to Hawaii and NOT take my Adventurebilt?

Opinions? Anyone else traveled with their ABs?

AB. You don't even need to store it, you can just wear it on the plane...just like Indy. If you're so unsure, I would reccomend wearing your AB on the plane, and packing your Traveller, so you can have both hats in Hawaii. :junior: -IJ

I would take the AB, regardless!

I mean, you are going on an adventure, so take the hat that will look the coolest! Plus, it would be great to see how it holds up in the humidity.

Worst case, it tapers and you send it to Steve for a re-block.

Dano,
I look at it this way: Hawaii has some Indy locations; the chance to have your photo taken at an Indy location with an Indy hat is there; therefore, you must bring Indy hat. That's my humble opinion.

I used to have this horrible issue of "should I , shouldn't I" syndrome. Should I risk damage, should I just take a different hat, etc. (not only with Indy gear, most "new" things.) I sometimes still struggle with it. But here is the bottom line- We buy these things to wear, enjoy, and share with others. Not to sit, hidden in some closet or box or drawer. We don't get to share in the enjoyment of them nor the fulfillment of owning the same gear our hero had when the items are not with us! All that happens is you end up saying "Man, I wish I would have brought my Adventurebilt" or my Wested or whatever! Now if you are certain you are gonna be in the mud and muck, you probably don't want to wear your nice shiny new 300.00 Aldens quite yet- keep 'em nice for a good while, they'll get their adventure time soon enough! But a trip on a plane, to Hawaii is an absolute certain Adventurebilt trip! It may or may not rain, it may sprinkle , who knows. But the chances of it getting stolen or destroyed or tapering to a dunce cap are incredibly minimal, especially if you are wearing it! I remember one time when I was.........ahhh who cares! Just wear your Adventurbilt! You'll be glad you did and you'll probably get lots of conversation because of it! Not to mention, you'll have a story to tell us! We're really not interested in your "traveller" hat  (no offense, this isn't "travellergear" ). But we'd love to hear about you AB adventures! Of course this is just my opinion, I have been known to be wrong!

have a nice day.

After my last experience on an airplane, I'd have to say take a hat that you can fold or stuff in a corner. I took my Akubra slouch with me up to Seattle 3 months ago, and found it very difficult to store safely unless I wanted to hold it in my lap. I wound up putting it in overhead storage, but was worried that some clown would crush it when he slung his carry-on bag into the bin or that something would shift during the flight and do the same thing. For me, flying today is almost like taking the Greyhound was 20 years ago. Things are so cramped in those aluminum tubes nowadays that I try to be as lean clothing wise as possible when I fly.

In retrospect, I wish I'd taken my Tilley.

If it is your 'Gear' then take it with you. Otherwise it is just part of a costume. I recently had my Fed Deluxe with me in Florida. It was hot and humid, but that is Florida weather regardless of my wearing a hat or not! :D

If the flight doesnt take too long you can keep it on your legs while you are at your seat

If you’re going to Kauai there are a couple of Indy locations; the “Paramount Mountain” is about the best. I was there in 1996. I’m not aware of any Indy locations except on Kauai.
If your not going to Kauai, I’d leave the fedora at home and pack a Tilley. You will get more use out of it in the sun and at the beach.
Just my thoughts.

Forrestal

Also, be sure to take plenty of pictures and take notes, I want to do for you that I did for Farnham or at the very least host your thoughts about how your fedora held up for the Adventurebilt tribute page I'm working on.

Well on Sunday I board a plane wearing my AB for the first time & fly to China. After 2 weeks I move on to Mongolia, where I hope to do alot of horse riding wearing that hat :D

I fully expect to comeback & Steve/Fedora to be holding the hat in 2 months time gingerly between two fingers, stratching his head, turning up his nose at the smell & say aloud "What the heck did he do to it!?!" :-s

Take your AB. It won't end up worse than mine. I bet ya!

Hehe what was I thinking posting a "should I take my Indy hat or non-Indy hat" question on this board...you guys might be a little biased!!!

Thanks for the feedback though, I probably will take it. I'm going to the Big Island though, I don't think there are any Indy locations there. I've been to Kauai twice but didn't get to the shooting locations there. Definitely will next time.
