Least Expensive Fedora review

OK, as per DanoSaurus' posting and Dalexs' request for a review in the Least Expensive Fedora thread (viewtopic.php?t=12364), I've purchased a Jaxon Iconoclast.

Due to the fact that I blew my head gasket on my Jeep, plus new brakes for my wife's car, and I am too impatient to wait until next fall for a new hat, I decided I would start off my hat collection with this one and work my way up to an AB. This way has the added benefit of letting me practice bashing without trashing a higher quality hat.

Here's a couple of pics of the hat right out of the box:

As you can see, the brim is a little malformed, but not badly. It also has the tear-drop crown, so I will be checking out the wooden spoon tutorial recommended by VP over the weekend.

I'm going to shoot for the idol grab bash, but I don't think I'll try that little offset bit. Just getting it to look decent will be challenge enough!

Opinions? Advice? Offers for a personal tutorial on bashing? Offers to bash it for me if I supply all the beer? Offers to come to my house and bash it for me?

I'd say just a tigher pinch in front and poke down the back of the crown into an Indy type bash would be a good start.

Check out the steaming/bashing tutorial here also.

Good deal Mojave. I look forward to hearing about how the hat holds up.

Good deal. :)

I'm just starting out in my fedora collection too, you've got to start somewhere.

Besides, you can never have too many hats.:P

Mojave, you live rather close to me, right? We sell Jaxon Iconoclasts in my store, and I've been thinking about getting one for the sole purpose of a reblock.

Maybe we could meet up and get some coffee to discuss how we should re-do that hat.

Hey MJ,
First thanks for the complements on my DP on my thread :D . It looks as if you'll have as good results with yours. When you remove the teardrop bash be sure to gently remove the outline before you complete the new bash. I used a damp cloth and a soft bristle toothbrush to remove it by gently raising the nap. good luck and look forward to seeing your results.

Honestly I'd ask 3kBucks on that one, as he's had succes with pre-creased hats like that before.

Shoot, Strider, that's where I ordered mine! :? I didn't realize that was your store! I actually just ordered a second one in a size smaller, just to make sure I have a good fit. Had I realized I would have just made plans to come down and see you.

Not too late, though. We'll have to followup with our tentative plans to visit the San Diego MNH. I'll talk to my wife an shoot you a PM.

My wife would debate you, Zach, but I totally agree.

So first things first. As Curator Rick says, I'll have to remove the old teardrop crown. Is there a tutorial on that, Rick, or is it included in one of the other tutorials?

Glad someone decided to order one of these, while it may not be 100% accurate it looks like a decent hat for the money, and everyone has to start somewhere. Besides WE might know that a teardrop crown is not accurate, but I'll bet anyone who sees you wearing this hat will instantly think Indy.

How is the felt quality? Is it lined? Leather sweatband?

It is lined, here's a pic:

Strider could probably speak to the quality better than I. I understand it is a fur felt, but I'm not sure which kind of felt. Strider?

I'll have to double-check the sweatband. Didn't think to look before!

Nice! Looks like a leather sweatband to me. Probably rabbit fur felt. Nice hat for the money!

Nice! With a little tweaking, it looks like it's an excellent choice for the budget minded! Tone, do you know how the felt would compare to a regular Akubra Federation?

Good for you Mojave,

I went with a Stetson for years and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Have a great day!
