What is the best (and hopefully readily available) material for a cracker?

I've made a few crackers out of whatever thread I had lying around but they weren't that good.

I'd like to be able to buy a spool of stuff so that I can make my own but I want the right stuff...

The stuff that's been most readily available for me is the nylon thread used by carpenters for plum line. It's in almost any hardware store in a variety of colors, it's durable and cheap; usually around $3-$5 depending on what size spool you get. If your just making them for yourself, a 300 yard spool should last the rest of your life!

I just hafta say it in regards to crackers and falls, you make the best. I just had Sergei put one of your white hides on my David Morgan, and lemme tell you, I've never seen a fall that takes more punishment than it gives (and by the looks of my right arm recently, it certainly can give it!).

I hope you never stop selling those falls and crackers.

I have no plans to stop selling those falls and crackers, or whips for that matter. Everything on my site is still available right now with the exception of the whips, which will be making their appearance soon enough. Keep crackin', French!
