So, what do you guys think. Would anyone want to buy one?
Ok, I am trying to put some humor into a situation that had me on the rampage early, early this morning. Ok, here is the story behind that hat, and two others that did not fare as well.
I was working late last night, making hats of course. Around midnight, I decide to walk up to the house to fix me a cappuchino, as I needed the caffeine boost. I heard a commotion down my long driveway, and noticed that a big white bulldog had knocked over one of two trash cans , and was tearing up the garbage bags. Well, I am too tired to pick it up(the garbage was to run the next morning), so I procrastinate and head on inside, silently cursing my neighbors who do not follow the lease laws in the county. I never make the coffee, but sit down to watch a few minutes of Fox news. The next thing I know, it is 3 am, as I feel asleep. So, I head down to the hat shop to cut all the irons off and the airconditioner and lock up. I had left one of the big double doors open all of this time. My wife wakes me up around 8 am and asked what is a hat and the block doing out in my other driveway. (other end of the house) It was then that I made the discovery. That dog had entered my hat shop, and carried off 3 hats, in various stages of drying!!!!!!!!! Now, I have duplicates in most of my Raiders blocks, except the 7 5/8 and 7 3/4, as I sell few of those sizes. One of the blocks and hats was the 7 5/8!!! I am starting to sweat bullets. The hat you see pictured above is the, or was the 7 5/8. So, I drive up and down my road, searching the yards of neighbors. No luck.
My wife calls one of the neighbors and asked if she had seen the hats and blocks. Oh, she says, so that is what that is. Her bulldog was the culprit. So, he ate one, and tore two up. All I can say, is I have my gun loaded and he will make only one more trip down my way. Fedora

Oh jeez!
Can you expect the owner of that dog to make good on the damages?

Man, that is terrible!
By all means shoot the mutt on site the next time you see him.
There is nothing I hate worse than a stray dog. I was nearly attacked by two about a year ago while hiking. Since then I never go hiking unarmed.

what does this mean for the future of your hats?

yikes!
Steve that really blows. Were they beaver or rabbit hat bodys?
Either way, that stinks a ton. Im sure you put a lot of work into them
allredy and then they get destroyed
I seriously think you should
either ask for a payment of the hat bodies worth, or....press charges or you could just shoot the dog...
...or whip him for that matter.
Well, hope things work out.
Regards!

BWHAHAHA!!! That is awesome!!
Don't get me wrong, I feel for you Steve, but that is like the coolest story on this forum yet! I hope the blocks are ok, that would really **** a lot if they were wrecked, but that is the coolest looking hat!
I think you should block that hat, get it as close to indy shape as possible. If you clean that up and re-shape it, man, would that be a selling point for the hats! I mean, think of it...
"I dunno, can the Adventurebilt take abuse?"
"Well John Random check out this hat, it was mauled by a Bulldog and look how good it still looks!!"
But ya, for sure, they should pay for damages, plus, that dog needs to be on a leash, hats makes for a good story, childeren, not so much.
You know though Steve....If they won't pay for damages, I think all the members of COW should put in a few bucks and buy that hat as the official COW Fedora! I would be willing to throw $5 towards you getting your cash back, anyone with me?

I totally agree! This is one of my HUGE pet peaves! I cannot stand it when people are careless with their animals! Not only because this kind of thing can happen, but also for the safety of the animal! It does stink, Fedora, that he got to your stuff, but please don't blame the dog. He's just doin' what comes natually! It's the OWNER that should be shot! If he comes around again, just catch him and refuse to give him back to the owner. Take him to a no-kill shelter so they have to PAY to get him back. As far as this case goes, it will easily stand in small claims court. They should HAVE to pay damages(not only that, if they were worth their salt, they would just voluntarily offer to pay!) . Of course this is just all my opinion.
Have a nice day.

My pet peeve is when someone spells "pet peeve" incorrectly. Just kidding, these are all excellent points. I would not bother going through the hassle of small claims court for one reason: Nobody is saying what Fedora already knows. If you do not want the dog to get into your shop, do not leave the door open.

oops
, peeve, sorry. Speaking of which, (good point, Rick) another pet peeve- people that leave their garage door open. You're just ASKIN' to have everything stolen, so you arrive to a nice, clean, completely EMPTY garage! (Remember, Dr. Jones, don't trust ANYBODY)
have a nice day.

Agreed Steve. I would look for some kind of compensation even if it only covers your cost. How far back did this set you on orders?

Oh, MAN, Steve!
At very least, I think since there are leash laws your neighbour hasn't leagally followed, it's worth a conversation to see if he'll pay for damages, or at least for half of it. Sure, it can be argued that you left your door open, but the other half is that your neighbour let his dog loose UNLEASHED and his dog caused the damage. That would make the argument fair, leaving half the responsibility to the neighbour who should at least pay for half the cost.

I guess I should have mentioned that the folks insisted on paying for the hats destroyed, cost of materials. I do have nice neighbors and everyone knows everyone out here in the sticks. And yes, the moral to the story is, do not leave the door open!!!
Now, I will really have to watch it because once you get the taste for pure beaver, you won't fool with rabbit anymore.
I suspect that dog will be back for "seconds".

That is a great Jed Clampet hat!
Any got the rest of the Jed Gear? lol
Yeah, it's defineatly the fault of the owner as you should be allowed to leave your door open if you want. Some person may come in and vandalize or steal your stuff, but their isn't a leash law for criminals and miscrients.
If you shoot or maime the dog the owner may turn around and sue you or get the ASPCA on you or something and you could be fined or arested depending what you did to it.

Well, Steve, I'm glad you've got good neighbours who insisted upon that.
I wish all neighbours could be that responsible!

Now, Bufflehead, why would you block your hat on a coconut?

I think you are on to something! sorry about the hat, but you should really offer a pre-distressed hat. Indy hats should have a broken in look to 'em.
Posted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 11:05 pm
by Strider
You can do that yourself, simply by sitting on your AB a few times. This won't ruin the hat, I promise, I've done it several times. That'll give you that "worn" look real quick!

...I have to admit that Strider's right on this one. I've parked my tuckuss on my AB a couple of times and it worked!

Put it up on ebay with a good story to go with it. People will buy just about anything anymore if it's got a good story to go with it. You know, it belonged to a man who died a mysterious death (look at the hole and teeth marks!
), and he now haunts any owner who has it in their possession.....

Sir, will you have take that hat with, or without holes? Now, why did I not think of that.

Maybe you could sell the hat as the Barranca Special. The hat that aspires to emulate Indy's????
Must have been one hungry bulldog.

Fedora,
Try a bit of Halt! the next time that dog comes around. It's basically Mace for dogs. It doesn't do any permanant harm, but that dog won't come anywhere near you or your workshop again! Think of it as extreme aversion training in one short lesson.
Or just throw one of the coconuts at him (assuming you are on the migration route, of course).

- Now, listen to a story about a man named Jed...
Poor Mountaineer who could barely keep his family feed...
Then one day, he was shooting at some food...
And up came a barrel of bubbling crude.
Now, I love my dogs. I love them both individually. But if they tresspass and ruin property that wouldn't be any good. And some stuff you just can't replace.
Steve, let us know if we can help replace that block if need be.

Well, I feel guilty because I think I'm the one who asked you to get a 7 3/4 block, and to date I have not ordered a hat from you. Rest assured, I shall in the future, provided it doesn't disappear. My priorities have shifted somewhat over the past year, but I still need an Adventurebilt fedora.
