Hi I'm an Indy-Fan from Germany and just registered yesterday.

I know this page (and the forum) for a long time and it's just great.

I have a question about my Akubra Fed. : Does anyone know if it's bad for the my fedora take out the little metalwire in the sweatband?

Welcome Henry! It's good to have you here.
Removing that wire will not hurt the hat one bit. Some folks remove their sweatbands entirely! I am not entirely sure why that wire is in there in the first place. -Perhaps someone else can comment on that. I remember some folks saying how that wire was setting off the metal detector at airports.
Welcome and enjoy your stay. :D

Welcome to COW, TrH. I don't know if removing the wire will damage the sweatband or not. There is one way to find out for sure, ask Fedora. He is the hat master around these parts.

Hmmm.... just read this post and honestly I'm not a big fan of removing that wire. On a well made hat this wire is esential to keep the bailed shape in the sweatband. That again makes the sweatband fit really snug in the brim break area, making the overall appearence of the hat nicer.

Of course, if the sweatband doesn't have the bail from the get go and you don't care for the support of strength that the wire adds to the sweatband, you can just remove it. I have seen high dollar hats, where this detail was completely missed (I won't go there again, just read Fedora's signature and you'll know what I mean) and I have seen really well made hats for little money with that feature.

Charlie (######) brought up the topic once. And he sure did a favor to those who care for these details by pointing it out, so credit to whom credit is due I guess.

Regards,

Marc

Could you please explain "bailed shape" and "brim break"? Thanks.

Also, is that thread to which you refer where ###### explains it still around? I can't find it.

Thanks a lot,

Charlie didn't explain it here, but on another forum, so you won't find it here

Brim break: the area where the crown turns into the brim et vice versa. The brim has a break and there is the crown :)

Bailed shape: if a sweatband is put together properly, it has a taper to ensure that there's no gap between brim break and sweatband (since the brim break also has a little radius).

Marc
