Hello there all you wonderful Indy men! Perhaps you could offer help to a fellow Indy gal. I'm going to order a TAG strap soon, and was wondering exactly what the "Grooves" are, since it's not in my Indy gear knowlegde. I was reading some past posts, and it seems that the grooves aren't as you all would say "screen accurate", but I was wondering if I could get some info on this. Does anyone have pics of both versions? Sorry if this has already been covered somewhere in this vast forum, but frankly I don't feel like browsing all past topics, because I'll get addicted to all the Indy info, and be on here for God knows how long. Thank you guys very much!

First of all, welcome Meg. Its always nice to have another Indy gal around! The grooves are small grooves along the edge of the strap. Here is a pic:

They are just for looks. I don't think Indy's bag had them.

Welcome Meg. I personally believe that the bag strap did have them. I have never seen an MBA strap, but I do have an MBA belt w/ attached whip holder. I think that the same leather was used for the whip holder as for the strap. The whip holder does have the grooves on it.

Ah darn...I thought we had decided that it didn't have grooves?

Yes it doesnt have straps, it just looks cooler for some people, but no in the movies no straps

Another theory is that different straps were used for different shots, as it was most likely with the bag itself. Proof and pics of existing grooves has been going on in the past, but the debate goes ever on. Maybe you can get yourself a strap that is finsihed on both sides with one side "grooved" and you then can flip it at will. Or order two! And then you need a black one for the ToD-look... Something I hope somone of our lovely vendors will come up with soon.

Forgive my ignorance as a new student to this site and to the complexities of indy gear, but what is a TAG strap? I have a WPG bag (currently left in the sun for weathering) and was wanting a different strap (I hate to say "better strap" since the bag is superb and I am glad WPG sells them at such a reasonable price.)

Nice to see this debate happening all over again. I believe that accurate straps do not have grooves. If you watch the films, pausing and zooming in on the straps, you will see that there are no grooves. Grooves are not something that would be hard to see on film - they would be very apparent.

But I will say that if anyone got one of my straps and decided they wanted it the other way - I will always exchange it.

Swindy, I can do the straps in black no problem. (Lovely vendors, eh?)

Did anybody ever notice in the above pic from TIE (The-Indy-Experience ) that the buckle has been moved to be in the center of his chest? If you look at the bottom corner of Ford's (left) shirt pocket, you can see where the buckle had once been. I just found that interesting...now back to your regularly schedualed program 8-[ ....

Thanks for all your warm welcomes and replies! I think I'm going to get the strap with no grooves. I appreciate all your feedback, even though it seems like the great groove debate isn't over. Now I'll finally get to finish my bag, which I'm sure everyone of my friends will want ( Not to toot my own horn, but I am considered the fashionista among them, people at work, and at church)! Who says a stylish gal can't be glad in Indy Gear! Michaelson, your replys at Indyfan were perfect! Even though I've been absent for a while at Indyfan, it's still habit to go check things out over there every time I'm on the internet...it's just been so dead over there, that I decided to become one with the living! It's great to see that there are still Indy Fans alive and well. Maybe there will be a revival of the Indyfan forum, if Indy 4 ever comes out....but that's wishful thinking.

Yeah, acutally I did notice that.

As for the strap grooves, I don't think there are any in Raiders (where I've looked). Check the scene in Raiders where Indy takes the gag off Marion in the tent. There's a VERY close up of the bag strap there (warn over the "desert robe" he's got on) from over his sholder. Of course there could be mulitple bags (and straps) I suppose, as there is of most of his other gear.

I think I may change my stance on the strap groove issue. See my post here.

Is it possible that the strap that is folded over below the buckle, was mistaken for a groove? When I first looked at this picture, I had to rationalize why I thought I was seeing a groove...

Not in my case. I understand what's going on with the strap in that picture. I can sort of see how that might trip you up.

In the below picture you can see a dark line up near his colar on one side and a hint of a lighter line on the oposite side of the strap


These two pictures also bring up the fact that it might not be the same strap. See the 3 marks in the Cairo picture. They aren't there in the cave picture. There does seem to be a dusty lighter area above the buckle on both though. I guess those 3 marks could have been added after the cave scene also.

(and as mentioned in another thread that the buckle has been moved in the Cairo shot) If I'm figuring right it was shortened. (with the previous buckle position below where it is now) Looks dusty like around the buckle in the cave pic.

I may give up on this debate. I've been taking screen shots for the last hour, but some seem to confirm and some don't and I can see why some look like groves at times but then the light changes it looks smooth (just the slightly rolled edge casting a shadow) ARG! I haven't checked out the Truck scene yet but I've got to leave now.

That jacket almost appears to be black and not brown in that above pic...

Okay, now back to the topic about the strap.
