Better brim swoop from a wide oval?

Is it possible to get a better brim swoop by ordering a wide oval hat? Not that it would work for me, because I'm a wide oval - just curious.

In my expereince, yes it will. It will cause the front and back to be pushed out further, thus distorting the brim more. It will aslo give a reverse taper on the sides. However, the front and back might become more tapered (regular/bad taper) as well. I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

You can also acheive these effects by ordering one size too large and pulling the ribbon really tight.

Have you actually tried that? Is it hard to acheive?

I think this is just for the reverse taper

Ken,
Yes, I've done it. I've yet to own a fedora big enough to end up with a 'Cairo' that would fit me, but I tired it with my fedora on my wife's head. It produces the reverse taper and it DOES distort the brim, as you're basically crushing the hat.
PS I'll have some photos heading your way later on today

Swankara, I'm into super tight ribbons too. I don't sew my ribbons to my hats. Recently, I took one of my (already overtightened) ribbon "loops" off a 7 1/8 inch hat and FORCED it down over a hat I blocked myself, which is just under 7 3/8. SOMETHING had to give! What gave was the front dent over my right eye, and I got a channel under the ribbon- right where the Raiders channel is. This hat was turned though, I still think you need the turn. The turn puts the tighter curve (more area of felt) of the former front of the hat in the vacinity of the dent over the right eye, which is why I got a deep channel there, and not two eqally deep channels in both front dents. ..I'd guess if you're a wide oval, you shoud get a wide oval hat. You'd just need to turn it further than the Raiders hat was turned. Which means you'd have to reposition the ribbon.
