Here's a link to a (rather large) pic of my effort to make a 12-plait cowhide bullwhip closer to the size of a 'roo Indy. I made this whip with two plaited cowhide bellies and no bolsters.

I put a quarter in the shot for size comparison. The largest diameter of the lash is slightly over that of a quarter and the handle is slightly under.

That looks tight, uniform, and well made "...And I even like the color." Well done! :D

A 10-footer would be $210 plus shipping.

Hey Adam,

Gorgeous whip! The color of that cowhide is great. No need for waiting for the "aged" look. The handle knob looks a little bigger than usual, I was wondering if you loaded with handle with the lead tape...

Also, will you experiment in making a 12 plait bull with 1 belly and bolster like those 8 plait posted before?

Regards,

Bernardo

P.S. I like a lot the HUGE pic!

Hey Bernardo,

Yes, the butt was loaded with lead. I haven't found any lead tape yet, so all I did was take some lead tubing and pound it thin. With the whip pictured I used a spike that was slightly less than 1/4" in diameter, and I loaded the butt to make up for the lighter spike. I think the proportions of the knob are just a little big but I liked the balance, especially when doing the circus crack.

This whip pictured actually has the same number of layers in it as my 8-plait bullwhips as they had two bolsters. The belly in the 8-plait whips was started with a long yoke over the handle, while only the second belly in the 12-plait whip was started with a long yoke.

I'm sure if I use only 1 belly and 1 bolster that there will be room for a 3/8" spike in the handle. I think that's how you made some of your cowhide bullwhips. I used the 1/4" spike so that I still had room for both bellies. For some reason I feel uncomfortable putting so few layers in a 12-plait whip. I also feel attached to have two bellies in a 12-plait bullwhip.
