Hello everyone. This is my first post. I happened across this site and thought it looked like a great place to acquire and share information regarding bullwhips and such. I have a lot of questions and some things I would like to share with you in future posts. For right now, I could use some advice on what I should tie to the fall of my new Wayne Grady for cutting targets and how it should be attached. The whip itself is a 17'-10" 4-plait shot loaded bullwhip with a tapered flat leather fall. I'll try and post a pic of my whip along with a pic of another whip which shows the type of fall I am talking about. Any resonse is appreciated. Oh, and one other thing, could someone tell me how you post a pic here? Please?

Try going to www.imageshack.us , browse to the pic you want, host it, and copy the path to the "Thumbnail for Forums #1". It also helps to start off with a jpeg.
You'll get something like this:

Welcome to the board! I'm looking forward to seeing this whip!

Thanks for the quick response Hemingway and tips on pics. I hope I can get this to work. The first pic will be of my new Wayne Grady bullwhip. The other pic is of another Wayne Grady whip, but shows the fall much better. Any advice from anyone on what type of cracker/popper for target cutting I should attach to this type of fall and how to attach it would be very appreciated. Here goes nothing.

Welcome! Did you say 17 FOOT 10 INCHES?!? Holy Moley, that thing is a monster! I tried to crack a 15 foot once. Once. All I could pull off was forward cracks. Rundquist who isn't on this forum that much anymore was able to do a horizontal with it, but it darn near killed the guy!

Some of the whip experts should be able to pipe in on this, but I think you'd want to cut the fall down so it's more in line with the taper of the whip. Or even go so far as to replace the fall if possible. Nylon poppers aren't too expensive and available from many resources found here. They work great for cracking.

Those falls are a bit wide for cutting work, if they where mine bullwhips I would want to narrow the falls to align the taper with the plaited thong.

Regarding what type of cracker to use, Well depending on what you’re cutting, standard nylon crackers works fine for most things. You can buy them or make your own. I would imagine those bullwhips are a bit on the hefty side so I would probably uses a heavier nylon cordage if I where going to make my own. Something like twisted bailing twine or upholstery thread that you can find at the hardware store should be fine. Kevlar crackers also cut very nicely too, but they just won’t hold up well to continuous cracking. The best advice would be to try a few different types of material out and see what works best with your whips.

You have different options for attaching your crackers, you can punch a small hole about a half-inch from the tip of the fall, and thread the loop of the cracker through the hole and thread the tip through that and pull it through. If you narrow the fall you could also tie it on with a traditional Kimberly knot. There are website around that show how to attach crackers better then I can explain it in text, I don’t have the links handy right now, but if check though the forum archives and the web you shouldn’t have trouble finding them. Good luck and welcome to Indygear
