Has anybody thought of this being a Indy fedora? With a few modifications it would make a nice Indy fedora. Don't you think?

That would make a very nice Indy hat. Good find.

It would do the job, but the bound edge looks a bit wrong.

I'm not sure why someone would go out of their way to do this, however, when the Federation exists.

Its a matter if preference, really. If you want a hat that looks alot like the movie hat, then the federation would do good, but if you want a lower crown, I think that one would be nice. also, I'm a fan of both bound and raw edges, so I think the squatter is a nice hat :D

High Regards, Daryl.

I remember hearing (way WAY back) that the squatter in some way influenced the development of the Indy hat (maybe that's what Nadooleman is talking about!), but from the looks of it, that one's crown is a bit short, and the bound edge isn't very Indy-esque. Plus for the price one could easily get an Akubra Federation. Just ask RK  :junior: -IJ

The Akubra Federation and the Federation deluxe are better hats then this, but since it looked nice I thought id post it.

Actually you would be quite disappointed if you were going to by the Squatter as an Indy hat. However, the Squatter is a fine hat. It was the first real hat I ever wore. I have a black one I kinda inherited from my Dad. The crown is too low and has too much taper to make a good Raiders hat. In fact I don't really like the Raiders bash in it. It does look pretty good with a LC type bash though. Mine could probably use a reblock; its been wet many times. Dad said he had a fawn colored one years ago. He said he didn't like the color so he sent it back.

Don't misunderstand me, the Squatter is a fine hat, but its not an Indy hat. By the way, the felt is softer and thinner than the Federation. :D

I'm sure it's there, but I'm just passing through at the moment... ...I wonder how tall the crown is? It's sure a nice looker, bound edge and all !! High regards! Michaelson

Michaelson,
I beleive that the crown is 5 1/4. It measures 5" bashed. It also has a 1 1/4 ribbon. I wish I had a digital camera. If I did I could get a pic of it next to an AB and Federation. :)

OOOooo. 5" bashed. That's a great height! At least for me. Really tall crowns don't work to well. Thanks! :D Regards. Michaelson

I've always been tempted to get an Akubra Squatter. I think they're great looking hats and very period, even if they don't make the best Indy hat. Besides, a good fedora is a good fedora, regardless of the style.

Yea, I know what you mean. I've often toyed with the idea of getting one and trimming the brim and giving it a dimensional cut. Since the Squatter has a 3" bound brim I tink that there would be enough to work with. I don't care much for the wide brim and low crown. However, I think a some what narrower brim the hat would look much better. If your looking for a non Indy fedora then the Squatter would be a fine choice. As I remember the gray is a very nice color. :D

I'd just hate to lose the bound edge myself. Once you get and wear one with it, you get a bit attached to the idea. Regards. Michaelson

The squatter and it's one or two derivatives fall into the category of typical post war low crown styles that akubra adopted as that was the style wanted here in australia after the war. Pre war archival footage and photos show that australia was indeed the land of TALL crown fedoras, the only one of this type made today is the federation which is as you know a re-issue of a twenties hat, but even then, it's not a mainstream model in that it's only made for one store and one only. My own experience many years ago was that the squatter i had was too low a crown for my shape head to accomodate a "good" bash, and consequently you end up with a sheepfarmers hat every time. Not surprisingly the squatter and more so it's cousins the pocketweight squatter and featherweight squatter (regularly turn up in op shops) make excellent ladies hats, my ex-wife had a superbly bashed one , and my current female aquaintance has a brown one in her collection, both these were pocketweight squatters, a similar effect can be gained from a standard squatter, but may need the brim trimmed.

I totaly agree here -- the bound edge is a special thing -- something that 'speaks for itself'! That is a great hat...shouldn't really be considered for an 'Indy' -- it stands on it's own, as it is! Good Stuff! W>

The Akubra I wear while gardening/cutting the grass, etc, has a bound edge. It's the Coober Pedy model... bashed in a new and unique way by me, missing it's original strap, and replaced by a kangaroo plait.

As a good fedora from that period, yep. Looks like a very good vintage style fedora from the 1920's and 1930's. If that's the look you're going for, it's perfect.

But the Adventurebilt is much more authentic looking Jones fedora. 5 years in the research and the making.

Wow, it looks like it'd be cheaper for me to buy a squatter from these guys and have it shipped than from David Morgan in the States!

Its really hard to explain to someone why the Squatter is not an Indy hat unless they've seen one. If your looking for a Raiders (or LC for that matter) the Squatter is not even in the ball park. However, for someone who wants a ToD hat then the Squatter may work. Unless my memory fails me, my dad bought one as an Indy hat years ago. He said that the color of the fawn is not right for an Indy hat. However, this was sometime between ToD and LC so a lot could have changed since then. :)

P.S. On second thought the Squatter might make a decent LC if you don't want the tall crown. I had to stop and think that I wrote this post based on a Squatter I have that is around 7 years old and could use a reblock.

I think that, the Adventurebilt is the best indy hat out there. I would not buy the Squatter, but I figured that I would just post it since it was a nice looking hat.

It's never wrong to share information, nor is it a bad thing to call attention to an old topic, because that might stir up interest among the newer members. Cheers! :D

Don't feel like anyone (like , umm...er....me   ) was jumping on you for posting it. :D The Squatter is a fine hat, in fact it was the first fedora that I ever wore. And I still wear it from time to time. I just didn't want anyone to buy one expecting to get an Indy hat.
