The "Australian" hat

I wear my Adventurebilt nearly everywhere I go, but it strikes me a bit odd that several times in the past couple weeks I've had comments that my AB reminds them of an Australian hat. They weren't meant as bad comments (they actually complimented me on the hat) and we're all aware of Noodleman's "Australian model" comment when selecting the hat for Raiders. I guess what struck me as odd is that I've received a number of comments in such a short period of time regarding the "Australian" look of the hat. I'm just curious how many of you have worn your Indy fedoras and gotten the same comment at one point or another.

Never. I get the usual 'cowboy' reference, if anything anymore. Regards. Michaelson

I don't get any comments. Maybe sometimes an Indy reference from my friends but nothing else.

People today lack a frame of reference for the fedora and the closest "iconic" hat at hand would be the Aussie hat or a cowboy ditto. Somehow, when combined with a brown leather jacket, the fedroa (I dare you again, VP) apparently brings something Crocodile Dundee-ish to peoples' minds...

When not recognised as Indy enthusiasts (which was quite common, btw), we were mostly regarded as Australians in London during the UK summit. Well, that would be all but me - I didn't bring a hat. Guess I was referred to as the odd, hatless Australian...

There are worse nationalities to be considered than Australian. Welcome to the club ;)

Thats kinda strange Bink. I find it odd the they were aware of Noodleman's comments but didn't notice your AB as an Indy fedora. I would think that you would have to an Indy fan to set and watch the bonus dvd and actually remember a detail like that. But if you were a fan wouldn't a brown hat make you think of Indy? :?

I believe bink meant to say that we as in gearheads, are aware of Nadoolman's comments re: the Australian connection, not the people who're commenting on the hat in general. Nadoolman's comment is probably not known among the general public... :)

(Sorry about the bold text, but Noodleman just makes me go VP. Absolutely no offense meant to all the good people here who insists on calling the poor woman Noodle-man...  )

@Rob: so true.

Oops! I misread Bink's post and was just copying his spelling of Nadoolman. I should have known better than to think that Bink had it right.  :D

Actually, bink ain't sole responsible for that unfortunate moniker... seen it all around the COW.

Debbie Noodleman...

Sounds like some messed up Seinfeld character.

I've had someone ask me if my hat was from Australia -- when I was wearing my Akubra Federation. The only time I've heard an "Indy hat comment" was when I was wearing an Akubra Cattleman. Go figure. At least I wasn't complemented on my "top hat."

Cheers,

Harry

Sheer laziness on my part. I didn't want to take the extra couple of minutes to scout out the correct spelling of Noodlehead's name. Really, I just wanted to grate on Scandinavia's nerves. But you guys knew what I was talking about.

And Mr. Waever, yes, I meant that we gearheads are aware of Nadoolman's comments, and not the general public. It's the general public who sometimes give the "Australian hat" comment when seeing the fedora in person. I think I've had more Australian comments than cowboy assosiations with my hat. :?

So far I've been able to put my foot in my mouth once a week for the last 2 weeks. I'm batting a 1000. :?

In a way the Australian comments make a little sense. A fedora does have a little more in common with the Aussie style hats than a cowboy hat. Well, anyway...its nice to have someone complement you, even if their way off. :D

While I was waiting for my Akubra to arrive, my sister, who didn't know about the hat, requested I get her this movie for her birthday. It's Australian, 1982 it's kind of a classic. Image Here's a pic from the sequel. Image

Yeah, Weaver, a compliment is a compliment, in my book. I've never been offended when someone says that my hat reminds them of Australia. In fact, my favorite Australian compliment came from a little girl a while back. I was at the library and this little girl and her mother were sharing an elevator ride. I was wearing my Akubra Federation at the time.

Little Girl: That hat looks like an Australian hat.

Me: Well, this hat was made in Australia, so you're right!

Little Girl: I know where Australia is. I've been there. It's at the zoo!

Her mother and I smiled widely at each other and her daughter. (Fort Wayne has an excellent zoo with an Australian veldt section. The child had visited there often.)

That's a great pic, too, 3thou. I don't blame most people for giving the fedora an Australian connection.

Hope the "top hat" comment wasn't over the line. Just a little cross-thread jest. I think the height of Indy's hat is one of it's best features. Your lid looks good in your avatar pic, JPenman.

Cheers,
Harry

And they actually call it a 'veldt'? Maybe if we were South African, or something, that might be close...

Actually, they call it the "Australian Adventure" - the African section is the "Veldt"

I guess "Outback" should have been the proper word. :)

Okay, it's been a little while since I've been to our zoo, so I forget exactly what they call it. Yes, they have an "African Vedlt" section. I got it confused. I didn't mean to offend you if I did, Rob  To be fair, any section of any zoo never compares to the real thing, although they did import tons of red earth from Australia for that part of the zoo. They let the kangaroos roam free in parts of it. If I had the chance, I'd rather visit Australia proper and have everybody down there comment on how American my hat looks.

Little Girl: I know where Fort Wayne, Indiana is. I've been there. It's at the zoo!

No, no, you didn't offend me, Bink. But the zoo would have, if they were referring to an Aussie display as a 'veldt' or 'the veldt'.

What would we say? Yeah, 'the outback' is a good 'un. 'The bush' is another.

Okay, I just did my homework. They call it the "Australian Adventure." They have a really cool aquarium, too!

No one's ever said my hat looked Australian... of course I live in Australia so it wouldn't make much sense- but I've never got a single comment on it here from people I don't know. In some places in Australia you can almost blend in wearing the Indy hat...

When I was in Marakech I got a lot of 'hey cowboy' comments though.
