Leather Samples

I've been thinking about getting a wested jacket for a couple of months now and im starting to decide which options to go with. i have a couple of questions:

I just ordered some samples of authentic goat and lamb and some others. how long do samples take to travel? =P i live in australia.

Is it fairly safe to go get measured by a tailor? has anyone here had problems with the sizing of their jacket after getting professionally measured? What is the best way to go about all that measuring stuff?

Im sure there were other questions...if they come to me ill be sure to ask =) This forum has been incredibly useful so far...i doubt i would have had the courage to try and get a wested jacket had it not been for the useful information you guys have given.

oh also...anyone on these forums from Melbourne (australia)?

Well, so long as he doesn't jab you with a pin, or get designs on 'measuring your inside leg' yeah, sure, it's fairly safe... ;)

I don't recall anyone having problems after a professional measuring. Indeed, a great many of us, myself included, just did it ourselves. Remember, the jacket is built with a little leeway, so even if you're a little over or under the exact measurement, it's not like the jacket's not going to fit, or will suddenly start swimming on you, either.

The best place to start, I feel, is having several suit jackets. Are they all the same size? Do they fit OK? That'll be your chest measurement, right there. Get your arms done properly and you're essentially home and hosed.

I gave Wested measurements that I took off a old jacket that fits me great and my Wested came out great. I hope that helps some.

What about back length?

I had a Todd's Large B (the new kind) and the length was much too short for me.

I was talking to Peter about this, and he said some sizes people send through to him for customs are a surprise.

ie for an average person (5' 10") he would expect around about 26 sleeve, 25 back, and whatever chest.

But double check for the jacket you are asking for. I believe his Rola's are slightly longer.

I'm 5'6" and I think I"d go with at least a 25.5" back..

blueoakleyz, could you measure the length of the stormflap and compare it to the back length for me?

Search, yes.

Dragging the body back with you when you come, no.

We try not to practice 'old post necropsy' around here, if you don't mind. It's confusing enough keeping up with the current stuff without dragging old business back to the forefront. ;)

I think some of the sizing issues has to do with personal choice. Some prefer the jacket to end right around the belt line, while some think it is too short. Just depends on what you are looking for in a fit. Beginning with a suit coat that fits well is a good starting point.

I guess the real wrestling match comes to defining if it's jacket length, or coat length.

There is a difference. ;)

Most OTR 'short jackets' fit me like car coats!

Of Todd's standard? What's the stormflap and how do I measure the back?

I don't think it would matter.. especially if the topic is relevant right

My mom told me the TOdd's looked like a girl's jacket on me. I guess cuz girl's jackets are a lot shorter?

The stormflap is the piece of leather that covers the zipper when the jacket is closed. The back measurement I am looking for is taken from the bottom of the collar stand, on the center of the back, to the hem :TOH:

Last word on the subject. This is not a practice we do here. Do your search, but from now on start a new thread to keep the clutter down. :-s

back length was 24" from the bottom of the collar of the collar (that one inch stripe behind the collar) all the way to the bottom of the jacket

stormflap was 22.25" from the top part (it has an angle at the top) down to the bottom stitch, or 22.5" to the bottom of the jacket

Almost all Indy jackets are designed a bit short, and really only work (in my opinion) if most of your height is in your legs and a slim mid-drift, like Ford. The longer Indy jackets come mainly from US Wings and G&B, or ordering custom.

I'll probably go with a 25" back then. Unless they can do halves but they only show wholes on their custom page.

The sleeve length thing confuses me.

How do you convert a 3x sleeve size to a 2x sleeve size?

For example my Todd's sleeve length is listed as 35.5" but is an inch too long for me. So how do I convert 34.5" into the 23,24,25 etc lengths on Wested?

Wested's chart, as they say on the website, is just a guide based on what their off-the-rack jackets would measure approximately. With a custom jacket, you tell them what measurements you need, including halves.

Now, my personal experience with Wested is that they are good with requested sleeve lengths, but bad about requested back and front lengths. I can only guess they assume you measured wrong and make them however long they think it should be. It's the only explanation that makes sense to me. My custom Wested was a full 2 inches shorter than I asked for in the back, and 3 shorter in front. It might have been a screen accurate length, but on a guy with a long torso and a gut, it didn't look right at all.

Since you liked your Todd's standard, why not get a custom from him? The quality will be even better, and you have a jacket he knows well to compare with and point out sizing issues on. I bet if you contact Todd personally and send him pictures of yourself in the jacket you have, your odds of getting the right fit will increase dramatically.

That's scary.

The 24" length on Todd's is just too short. It *looks* right but just feels too short.
I'm going to have to shop around a lot, lose a lot of weight and go get professionally measured. How much does that usually costs? How do I know they are accurate? Do they get ticked if I get measured but don't buy anything?
Do I send my actual sleeve lengths and they give me the "Indy" length sleeves proportionately?

Judging from what you're saying here I think Todd still includes the shoulder in the arm measurement. Conversion should be easy: take your Todd's and measure the outside of the sleeve from the seam where it connects to the shoulder to the end of the cuff. That's how Wested measures the sleeve length :TOH:

I think Todd's sleeve measurement is from the centre of the back, over the shoulder to the end of the cuff. (as for a shirt) so it should be half the shoulder to shoulder measurement plus the shoulder to cuff sleeve measurement. (approximately) So subtract that half shoulder to shoulder measurement from the listed dimension.
