Hello all, Ive been a Club Obi Wan member for some time, but dont do
alot of posting. I was wondering what exactly a hat turn is, what it entails, and how many of you have had this done to your hats? Any replies would be appreciated.

It's a good explanation on that site. How it ever became known as 'turned' rather than 'an off centre pinch' (which is far more descriptive) is beyond me, though!

"Off center pinch" might be a better title. "Turn" is less words, and what's an off center pinch without a turn... I'll think about it. At first, I thought the hat was turned 90 degrees viewtopic.php?t=2220&highlight= Looks like Oklahoma Jones was already turning his hat 1/4 to a half inch! Was he repositioning his front pinch and leaving it there? ..posting.. any pics? And "Bogie 1943" was onto the small turn as well. I don't know what Oklahoma and Bogie were saying about the turn before my 90 degree post , because I just started coming here at the time of that post. The small turn was in the air 4 or 5 years ago at Indyfan.com. I don't know if that guy was repositioning his pinch.. I don't think he said. So maybe all I did was spend the bucks to prove it, once and for all, to the community. I repositioned the front pinch off center, bought a web site and posted pics of it, compared it to the Raiders hat pictorially , and pushed the idea hard. Couldn't have done it without extra money, so, "thanks", money. And .. oh yeah,, the original Raiders hat had block formed bashes. Stay tuned for more my proof. Maybe I'll be the undisputed first with THAT one... except the current Swaine Adeney Brigg "Poet" hat has a top bash... I guess they figured it out before me. ..only it's missing the little front bashes. The Raiders hat had little block formed front bashes too, IMO. I've got the money to prove it!

and, 3thoubucks, I thought it was excellent. Over the weekend I turned my fedora 2/3 inches off center and it looks even more like Raiders. I am totally satisfied with the results. I always wondered why the brim looked different in the Bar scene, etc. So how many of you are satisfied after turning your hats? I love my Federation. Would get an AB but dont have the money. Oh well.

I think that almost everybody who has tried turning loves their hat's new look.

You really can't get the Raiders look without turning your hat. I don't know of anyone who wanted to unturn their fedora.

'To turn or not to turn' was a short dilemma of mine as well with my new AB Raven Bar hat. I knew that it had to be turned for the brim that is so Indy, and very cool, but I was a little hesitant not having experience with the wearability. Fedora was very helpful in answering questions and explaining. I went ahead, and could not imagine having not done so, what a disappointment that would have been. I am now so sold on the turned brim that I will be doing so with hats that don't necessarilty call for it. Reading posts and looking at pics is one thing, but putting one of these on your own dome decides it all.

Well, I'm the Lone Ranger then. I'm not a turned hat fan at all. Never have been. What's so ironic is I have a vintage Borsalino that has crooked front dents (originally based that way) that makes it LOOK like the hat has been turned, when in reality it hasn't been. So, when I wear it, it looks like I have the hat on crooked, when it's really the dents that are not centered correctly to the crown. Regards! Michaelson

There is nothing wrong with an unturned hat if thats what you like. If a hat is made of stiff felt it will be quite uncomfortable turned. However, with soft felt the turn really doesn't cause any comfort problems. I think its the turn that makes a brown fedora a Raiders fedora.

I guess being a fan of the LC fedora style, I never found it all that important. Regards! Michaelson

Sorry to gang up on you Weaver, but I turned my Akubra Federation and it was very comfortable. Also, that baby softened right up, then it turned green and frayed. Now I have my AB, and all is right in the world.

Actually, my experience with a turned Fed is nothing more than trying one on a few times and messing around with it some. I'm sure what it would mold to your head shape and become more comfortable. I know that my AB did. In fact I sometimes catch myself 'over turning' my AB. Its just that its conformed to my head so well that it doesn't really feel turned. (although it does look turned)

A good experiement is to stand in front of a mirror, put your hat on and slowly turn it while you are wearing it. Observe the shifts in the brim and the crown. -It will do a number on your hair though.

I don't mind my hats turned, but if I can get them un-turned, that's usually the way I go for it.

Does anyone know how it was determined that the Raiders hat was 2/3
of an inch off center?

2/3 inch isn't written in stone. The turn has to be fussed with often. I'm happy to have both turned and unturned hats.
